At this 12th Annual “Little Rebild”, it was possible to meet Cowboys and Indians, pan for gold and meet the Dalton Brothers, Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper. Many children spent part of the day in the “Wild West”. Tent luncheon Next, guests moved to the gigantic white tent, the largest ever complete with wooden floors, ready to serve more than 1,000 guests at the Rebild Society’s Annual Tent Luncheon. It is now just 3 months ago that I packed my valise and said good bye to Askov to make a journey to Denmark. It was with some mixed feelings. Half my life I have lived here and my other half over there in the old country. Ah, but off on the "steam horse" I went to Minneapolis where my daughter, Astrid, and I paid a visit to the Scandinavian-American Line's Office ~nd were received very kindly by Mr. Ellingsen, the line agent. He gave me a lot of good advice and recommendation letters to take with. That night we traveled on to Chicago where we arrived the next morning. I belong to the D.

  • American Independence Day Celebration, Rebild, Denmark, July
REMARKS THE HONORABLE HUBERT H. HUMPHREY AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION REBILD, DENMARK JULY 4, 1969 Your Royal Highness, President Emborg, Members of the Rebild Society, my fellow-countrymen - and in saying my fellow-countrymen, I include all Danes and Americans and all Scandinavians. After all, it was Queen Margrethe who united the three Nordic countries about 600 years ago. And for 400 years Denmark and Norway were united under the Danish Crown. My mother was born in Kristians sand, Norway. So what am I, Norwegian or Dane? I feel like that admiral of the Danish/Norwegian fleet: the Danes call him Tordenskjold and the Norwegians call him Peter Vessel. But this is the way of democracy - freedom of choice. In this instance, I choose to call you my friends. Denmark and the United States have been friends for almost 200 years. This is an example of friendship in freedom that makes this Inde pendence Day celebration a unique and exciting occasion. • • • 2 ••• • • • 2 ••• But our bonds of friendship are more than those of formal diplomacy. Ours is a friendship deeply rooted in democratic faith and practice. It is a friendship enriched by the ties of family here and in America - of friendship strengthened by common cause in war and common purpose in peace. It is a friendship of partners in alliance for a security of free nations. July 4th- Independence Day- is more than an American holiday. Like other great moments of history- French Bastille Day, Danish Consti tution Day .. it commemorates a manifesto of freedom for all mankind. We recall those immortal words from the Declaration of Indepen dence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal and are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, among which our life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".

The Fiftieth Anniversary of the Udvandrerarkiv, Aalborg by INGERBLADT On July 3, 1982, Det Danske Udvandrerarkiv in Aalborg will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary and look back on an existence marked by great difficulties. During critical times, in fact, its continued existence often seemed in doubt. The cosomopolitan Dr. Max Henius was the great initiator behind the creation of the triad now known far and wide: the annual Fourth of July celebration in Rebild National Park; the founding of the Udvandrerarkiv; and finally, the dedication in 1934 of the Blokhusmuseum , the Lincoln Log Cabin, in Rebild National Park. Max Henius, who emigrated to Chicago in 1881, was the son of an immigrant. His father had immigrated in 1838 from the small town of Thorn , Poland. In 1846 the family moved to Aalborg from Aarhus, where they had lived at first. The father, Isidor Henius, founded in Aalborg one of the city's distilleries.

  • Chapter III 1912 to 1942
THE CENTENNIAL HISTORY 1862-1962 By H.EINAR MOSE 1 | P a g e CHAPTER III 1912-1942 When Peder Kristensen was elected as Dania's president in 1912, the chief executive post was not new to him. He had served as president in 1886-87, and had finished out Henry Ockenholdt's term in 1903. A cabinet maker from Struer, Kristensen was a good looking man, known for his sense of humor and his hearty laugh. One of Peder Kristensen's main interests was the purchase of the Kedzie Avenue property, and in l9l2 he shared the shovel with Henry Ockenholdt when ground was broken for the new Dania quarters. He was a proud president when, on December 29th, he presided over Dania's 50th anniversary party and was able to show off the new club rooms. Dania's debt was $24,000.00 at this time, but the members' enthusiasm for the new club building, and their avowed support of Dania helped make the outlook a bright one. The ever generous Dania Ladies Aid Society pitched in and donated $400.00 worth of furnishings for the new Dania headquarters. Peder Kristensen's popularity was attested to by his re-election to the presidency in 1913 and 1914. Available Dania records indicate that no other man held this position for as many terms as he did. Kristensen evidently agreed with Havelock Ellis that, "dancing is the loftiest, most moving, most beautiful of the arts", because one of his first proposals during his l913 reign was to start a dancing school for the children of Dania's members.
