A beauty of a house with flint frontage, it’s been lovingly extended and transformed by the owners and offers plenty of space with a real sense of authenticity. If you love old houses but you want to live close to all the action, this is the place for you! At Home In The Area “I moved to Sprowston when I was young and have always admired the dairy cottage,” says the current owner. Moving back into the area as an adult, he had the opportunity to make this his home and he jumped at the chance to do so. The old dairy that stood here was once surrounded by fields, outbuildings, cattle and fruit trees – a far cry from all the amenities you enjoy a stone’s throw from the doorstep today. Just two miles from the city centre, you have pubs, shops, takeaways, supermarkets, schools, a golf course, library, dentist, butcher and so much more within easy reach. If you don’t drive, or if you have children looking for more independence, the regular bus service will come in handy. “I feel I have the best of both worlds,” explains the owner, “I’m in the heart of everything but both the house and garden are surprisingly private – and when I do want to get out into the country or go for a walk among the trees, it’s only a five minute drive out of Norwich and even less to Mousehold Heath.” Old Meets New The owners extended and improved the cottage over their years here, carefully retaining the character of the original dairy and using reclaimed materials and traditional methods where possible. It’s hard to tell which parts of the house are the oldest and which are modern additions, thanks to their painstaking attention to detail. “We took down the outbuildings and kept as much of the timber and flint as we could, using them in the extensions to the original building,” he confirms, “The additions have been built with 18-inch thick walls too and where we weren’t able to reuse materials from the outbuildings, we’ve chosen reclaimed wherever possible instead”. He also discovered original pamments under layers of lino in what is now the dining room. Every single one has been raised, restored and relaid – just one example of the great attention to detail throughout the home. A Friendly Feel Today the house has plenty of period charm but it’s also very light, bright and airy with a truly welcoming feel. The rooms are all a good size too, with a farmhouse style breakfast kitchen off the dining room, the latter having an open fire, so you can enjoy long winter suppers with the fire crackling away. The main sitting room is very generously proportioned and leads into a lovely cheerful conservatory where you can soak up the sun when it’s not quite warm enough to be outside. These two rooms are also perfect for parties as you can host a good number very comfortably. “I had over 100 people here for my 50th,” says the owner, “We had the doors open onto the garden and it all worked beautifully”. The outside space wraps around, with plenty of parking, a good size lawn where children can play, plus a pretty wisteria-covered pergola for al-fresco dining. There’s a wraparound terrace too, complete with hot tub – perfect for summer nights under the stars and totally private.
