PAPER 2 of 1982 ' CENSUS OF INDIA 1981 SERIES 11 MADHYA PRADESH FINAL POPULATION FIGURES (TOTAL POPULATION, SCHEDULED CASTE POPULATION AND SCHEDULED TRIBE POPULATION) K. C. DUBEY of the Jqdian Administrative Senke Oirector of Census Operations MADHYA PRADESH PREFACE It may be recalled that the gigantic decennial exercise or census was held from 9th February to 28th February, 1981, when nearly 85,000 enumerators wertt from bouse to house in this sprawling State of Madhya Pradesh and filled nearly. 522 lakhs of individual slips. The, provisional population totals were published within twelve days after receipt of figures from the districts and Corporations. Some time later, a supple~ent was issued giving the Rural/Ur~ break up of the f'1Pulation and its economic classification. The figures presented in these two publications were provisional and were published for meeting the urgent need of data users. The population figures have since been finalised and the Primary Census Abstract of the 1981 Census in respect of Madhya Pradesh, down up to tahsil and town level. is ready for publication in final form. This Primary Census Abstract will be released ~ Part II·B in the regular series of 1981 Census Reports. Since this publication 'Will take some time and since the State Govemm!nt and other data users are in need of some important population statistics particularly that relating to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe, it is decided to bring out the present paper for meeting their urgent macro-level needs. This paper presents statistics of total population ana Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe population with Rural - Urban break up, down up to tahsil and town level (45 districts. 190 tahsils and 327 towns). It may be remembered that apart from statutory towns. :the towns herein presented include those units also which have been treated as census towns Qn the basis of census criteria adopted for treating them as -such. It is hoped that this pUblication will help to satisfy the needs of data users pending publication of more exhaustive data in respect of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes of th~ State. Bhopal, K.
