In fact, there are also many polemics of thought that occur amongst Taufiqurrahman1 R. David Lewis on Convention Ernie Lepore and Matthew Stone Center for Cognitive Science Rutgers University David Lewis’s landmark Convention starts its exploration of the notion of a convention with a brilliant insight: we need a distinctive social competence to solve coordination problems. Convention, for Lewis, is the canonical form that this social competence takes when it is grounded in agents’ knowledge and experience of one another’s self-consciously flexible behavior. Lewis meant for his theory to describe a wide range of cultural devices we use to act together effectively; but he was particularly concerned in applying this notion to make sense of our knowledge of meaning. In this chapter, we give an overview of Lewis’s theory of convention, and explore its implications for linguistic theory, and especially for problems at the interface of the semantics and pragmatics of natural language. In §1, we discuss Lewis’s understanding of coordination problems, emphasizing how coordination allows for a uniform characterization of practical activity and of signaling in communication. In §2, we introduce Lewis’s account of convention and show how he uses it to make sense of the idea that a linguistic expression can come to be associated with its meaning by a convention. Lewis’s account has come in for a lot of criticism, and we close in §3 by addressing some of the key difficulties in thinking of meaning as conventional in Lewis’s sense. The critical literature on Lewis’s account of convention is much wider than we can fully survey in this chapter, and so we recommend for a discussion of convention as a more general phenomenon Rescorla (2011). -

In his most important writing in this field called "Politics", Aristotle classified authority in the form of two main parts: the correct authority and moose authority. In this sense, correct forms of government are 1.basileus, 2.aristocracy and 3.politeia. These forms of government are based on the common good. Bad or moose forms of government are those that are based on the property of an individual or small governmental structures and they are: 1.tiranny, 2.oligarchy and 3.democracy. Also, Aristotle's political thinking is not separate from the ethical principles so he states that the government should be reflected in the true virtue that is "law" or the "golden mean". The study focuses on Plato’s educational thoughts in Republic and Aristotle’s theory of education in Politics. Since Plato’s thoughts are rather philosophical in a way that they do not involve many practical applications to schooling, Aristotle’s thoughts on education are emphasized within the scope of this study. The results of the study indicate that virtue plays an important role in creating a virtuous society. In order to create a virtuous society, we need to educate the body, desires, soul and reason of the individual. Keywords: Philosophy of education, concept of education, history of thought. Group Consciousness
1 What is it like to be a group agent? Christian List June-July 20151 The existence of group agents is relatively widely accepted. Examples are corporations, courts, NGOs, and even entire states. But should we also accept that there is such a thing as group consciousness? In this paper, I give an overview of some of the key issues in this debate and sketch a tentative argument for the view that group agents lack phenomenal consciousness, contrary to a recent suggestion by Schwitzgebel (2015). In developing my argument, I draw on integrated information theory, a much-discussed theory of consciousness. I conclude by pointing out an implication of my argument for the normative status of group agents. 1. Introduction It is, by now, relatively widely accepted that suitably organized collectives can be intentional agents in their own right, over and above their individual members (see, e.g., French 1984; Rovane 1997; Pettit 2001, ch. 5, 2003; List and Pettit 2006, 2011; Tollefsen 2002, 2015; Tuomela 2013). 2 Examples of group agents include commercial corporations, collegial courts, non-governmental organizations, even states in their entirety. Like an individual human being, a group agent has purposes and intentions and pursues these through its actions. In doing so, it can be as rational as an individual rational agent, at least when we understand rationality in the way decision theorists do. For example, a firm’s behaviour in the market place can be well understood by modeling it as a rational utility maximizer, and corporations often fit the model of homo economicus better – and to a scarier extent – than most individual human beings do. -

The Future of Practical Philosophy James Stacey Taylor James Stacey Taylor is an Assistant Professor of philosophy at Louisiana State University, USA. He has published numerous articles on the theory of autonomy, ethics, and applied ethics. He is the editor of Personal Autonomy: New essays (Cambridge University Press, 2005), and the author of Stakes and Kidneys: Why markets in human body parts are morally imperative (Ashgate Press, 2005). ABSTRACT Over the last two decades the practice of applied philosophy has undergone resurgence. It is now common for philosophers to sit on ethics committees in hospitals, or to provide ethical advice to businesses, and many universities and colleges now offer courses in practical philosophy. Despite this, practical philosophy is subject to increasing criticism, with persons charging that (1) it is philosophically shallow, and (2) it has little to offer persons grappling with concrete ethical problems, either because (a) its techniques or too removed from such problems, or (b) because ethical theory is too abstract. In this paper I develop responses to these criticisms, and offer suggestions as to how practical philosophy should be developed. Over the last two decades the practice of applied philosophy has undergone resurgence. It is now common for philosophers to sit on ethics committees in hospitals, or to provide ethical advice to businesses. Many universities and colleges now offer courses in practical philosophy, ranging from courses in bioethics and business ethics to more innovative courses, such as philosophy as conversation. Such courses frequently prove popular. The popularity of practical philosophy is reflected in the demand for people who can teach practical philosophy (especially applied ethics), with this section of the academic job market in philosophy currently being especially strong.1 And it is not only the practice and teaching of practical philosophy that is currently flourishing. -

Kant’s Practical Postulates and the Limits of the Critical System Sebastian Gardner The topic that I wish to consider is the significance, both systematic and historical, for Kant’s system as a whole, of the postulates of pure practical reason, more specifically, of the two theological postulates concerning the existence of God and personal immortality which form the basis of Kant’s moral theology. My discussion will focus on the problems of Kant’s moral theology in the eyes of his early contemporaries, for whom it constituted a crux in Kant’s project. Different views were taken by Kant’s contemporaries of what exactly these problems signified regarding the future of Critical philosophy. For the thinkers I will be looking at here, the miscarriage of the moral theology constituted a fatal fault in the Kantian project. For the German Idealists, the moral theology instead provided a vital clue as to how the Kantian system could be transformed into a more radical idealism, while confirming that it needed to be. The role of the practical postulates in the development of German Idealism demands a separate treatment; what I will argue here is simply that the practical postulates do indeed represent a point at which Kant’s philosophical system displays a deep and interesting tension, in light of which both historical responses are prima facie intelligible. I. Kant on practical cognition Let me begin with some examples of Kant’s use, in connection with the moral theology and practical postulation, of the concept of practical cognition, praktische Erkenntnis. The following, key statements are taken from the second and third Critiques: [T]he concept of freedom, insofar as its reality is proved by an apodictic law of practical reason, constitutes the keystone of the whole structure of a system of pure reason, even of speculative reason; and all other concepts (those of God and immortality) ..
