The project area is the Peninsula of Devon and Cornwall, two neighbouring counties in the South West of England with a combined population of 1,664,500, 1,135,000 in Devon and 529,500 in Cornwall. Both counties have a rural element, a strong maritime heritage, are tourist regions and important retirement locations. The Peninsula area embraces numerous heritage sites, national parks and some of the nation’s finest tourist sites, notably the internationally renowned Eden Project. Devon and Cornwall share significant common features and have similar challenges and ambitions. In terms of administration, Cornwall has a single unitary authority whilst Devon consists of a County Council with 8 local government districts and 2 separately administered Unitary Authorities. Both Devon and Cornwall are actively engaged with the South West Regional Development Authority (SWRDA) and the Government Office of the South West (GOSW).     View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Apollo British Domestic Security Policy and Communist Subversion: 1945-1964 William Styles Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge September 2016 This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy William Styles British Domestic Security Policy and Communist Subversion: 1945-1964 This thesis is concerned with an analysis of British governmental attitudes and responses to communism in the United Kingdom during the early years of the Cold War, from the election of the Attlee government in July 1945 up until the election of the Wilson government in October 1964. Until recently the topic has been difficult to assess accurately, due to the scarcity of available original source material. However, as a result of multiple declassifications of both Cabinet Office and Security Service files over the past five years it is now possible to analyse the subject in greater depth and detail than had been previously feasible. The work is predominantly concerned with four key areas: firstly, why domestic communism continued to be viewed as a significant threat by successive governments – even despite both the ideology’s relatively limited popular support amongst the general public and Whitehall’s realisation that the Communist Party of Great Britain presented little by way of a direct challenge to British political stability. Secondly, how Whitehall’s understanding of the nature and severity of the threat posed by British communism developed between the late 1940s and early ‘60s, from a problem considered mainly of importance only to civil service security practices to one which directly impacted upon the conduct of educational policy and labour relations.

I love the changes – and the surprises. This year’s mild winter led to some remarkable early spring flowering, of bluebells, for example. Yet there was late flowering by others, in particular, hawthorn. It was cool and dry for the first half of spring (with a seeming dearth of insects) and then wet, resulting in a completely new mix of early summer blooms. It’s been all-change at the Trust, too. We said farewell to MARK CARWARDINE MARK our inspirational Chief Executive Bevis Watts, who in three years has transformed the Trust (he’s now director of the Roz Kidman Cox ethical bank Triodos but remains a stalwart supporter). Taking Trust Chair his place, arriving with equal energy, comes Ian Barrett: environmentalist, partnership-builder and, very importantly, a member. The Trust is the sum of its members – who often provide practical as well as financial support. So it’s been good to hear from you via the survey about the information you’d like more of.
