There is a distinctively festive feeling to the newsletter this month – it’s not too early to be thinking about Christmas now! We are delighted to bring to you on DVD for the VERY first time, a much loved British Christmas film from the 1960s, ‘The Christmas Tree’. A charming, heart-warming reminder of bygone Christmases with a host of British stars, set in England during the Sixties, available with optional subtitles for those who like them. Also included on the disc are some wonderful Christmas GLIMPSES to enjoy, to get us all into the festive spirit, including an Australian Christmas in 1947; British Christmases from the 1950s, with shop window displays and lights; and a charming festive overseas short from Sweden, with a snowy village, candlelight and a children’s choir. Marty Wilde MBE, who was a fantastic guest at our festival in March, has released his long awaited album ‘Dreamboats and Petticoats: The Very Best of Marty Wilde’ which we are proud to be stocking, along with some great Christmas gift ideas for the film lovers in your lives. Our exclusive interview with Marty will be broadcast on Nov 21st at 4.30pm. Another musical icon, the ‘English Elvis’ Terry Dene, who was a guest at the Stockport Festival of Film, is featured on page 5, in a fantastic art print produced by the talented Odysseas of Art & Hue. We presented a print to Terry at the Festival and he was delighted! Tickets for our March event in St Albans on 22nd March 2020 are now more than half sold out, so do grab yours quick. Gary has been discharged from a childrens’ ward just in time for Christmas. He is determined to get a tree for his friends on the ward who will be in hospital during the festive season and asks his brother and sister to help. Together they set out to deliver a tree to the children’s ward and we follow them through many adventures as they try to bring a tree to the hospital with no money or means of transport. Along the way the three encounter lots of adventures, as they attempt their journey by various routes and with the help (and hindrance) of a range of characters. Beautifully played by the three children, with a few familiar faces, this is a tale of good intentions, portraying the kindness of strangers and the determination of the young, infused throughout with the true spirit of Christmas! It turned out to be some dreadful American music apparently performed at something called the 'Grand Ole Opry' in Nashville, Tennessee. This woman sang a totally inappropriate song entitled 'Blanket On The Ground', one line of which went: 'Just because we are married doesn't mean we can't sleep around'! I ask you, this may be normal behaviour for hillbillies who marry their 13-year old cousins, but it is totally unacceptable here. A gentleman in the next row leaned over and tried to make out the words 'slip around', but of course that is absolute nonsense. Unless they were laying the blanket on icy ground why should they be slipping around? Then some awful man in a cowboy hat sang about his girlfriend coming out of a honkytonk. Why on Earth a woman would climb into an old upright pianoforte I have no idea; presumably this is where poor hillbillies live when their ramshackle huts fall down.

  • British Cinema of the 1950S: a Celebration
A Tale of Two Cities and the Cold War robert giddings There was probably never a book by a great humorist, and an artist so prolific in the conception of character, with so little humour and so few rememberable figures. Its merits lie elsewhere. (John Forster, The Life of Charles Dickens (1872)) R T’ A Tale of Two Cities of 1958 occupies a secure if modest place among that bunch of 1950s British releases based on novels by Dickens, including Brian Desmond Hurst’s Scrooge (1951) and Noel Langley’s The Pickwick Papers (1952).1 When all the arguments about successfully filming Dickens are considered it must be conceded that his fiction offers significant qualities that appeal to film-makers: strong and contrasting characters, fascinating plots and frequent confrontations and collisions of personality. In unsuspected ways, Ralph Thomas’s film is indeed one of the best film versions of a Dickens novel and part of this rests upon the fact that, as Dickens’s novels go, A Tale of Two Cities is unusual. Dickens elaborately works up material in this novel which must have been marinating in his imagination. Two themes stand out: the dual personality, the doppelgänger or alter ego; and mob behaviour when public order collapses. Several strands come together. Dickens had voluminously researched the Gordon Riots which were, up to then, the worst public riots in British history. Charles Mackay’s Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds (1845) I am Professor Emeritus in the School of Media Arts, Bournemouth Univer- sity. My schooling was interrupted by polio, but I was very well educated by wireless, cinema and second-hand books.
