6 Memories of working at The Rank Organisation Part 3, by Noel Cronin Well, a fellow post boy at Rank, called Terry went on to become Adam Faith! Meanwhile, I had the wide world of film freelance ahead of me. Applying for various cutting room vacancies around London I was offered a job as assistant film editor at a company called Wyvern Productions, run by Bernie Lewis, I believe, an ex-cameraman and Bob Rymer, a film editor. The company did BBC editing that couldn’t be managed in house, a lot of religious and historical programming all shot on film. The cutting rooms were quite basic carpentry in a disused part of the C.A.V. factory in Acton – so quite a fall from Hill Street off Berkeley Square! They were by a tunnel in the factory so as BBC used black cabs for all deliveries there was always a mixture of freezing air and cab fumes drifting under the ill -fitted doors. Whilst I tried with the little knowledge I had to be an Assistant Editor, it was so boring! Before long I was summoned to the other cutting rooms in Wardour Street - West End based, above the Flamingo Club which was at least fun to be near. I worked with a guy who will be nameless as he is still around, but a more unpleasant person to work with would be hard to find. However, this was my last chance to make it at Wyvern. The main job we had was to try and sync up the M and E track of the original Maigret series in preparation for dubbing into English, which was like starting a huge jigsaw puzzle with just a piece of sky to start with,in fact if I had be doing that I would have enjoyed it, but I just rewound film and made the tea etc. Things weren’t going well and Bernie called me in and suggested I may be better off elsewhere, so two jobs, two firings! Looking back I was so young and without proper training it was hard to get into the job. So cards and coppers in hand where to next? The great world of sound, De Lane Lea awaits me! Producer Noel Cronin founded Talking Pictures TV and Renown Pictures. Noel is contributing a series of memories to the newsletter over the coming months. Ever since his entrance into the world of film as a young man, Noel has been interested in preserving the heritage of lost and forgotten films, shorts and programmes, and for many years has been gathering, restoring and preserving this wonderful heritage which would otherwise be lost. Noel worked for The Rank Organisation and the Central Office of Information, and bought the rights to several libraries that owned films which now air on TPTV. His career as a producer and editor of films, documentaries and TV series spans several decades.

Call Us Now On Freephone 0808 178 8212 16 The Talking Pictures TV and Renown Pictures 6th Festival of Film as seen by the audience! Rather than us telling you how wonderful Stockport was, we thought we would share some letters with you following the event.

From: AL SAMUJH (Smudge): Two things struck us as we arrived at the Festival; firstly the sight of the beautifully restored Art Deco period Plaza Cinema, and secondly the sign saying, “Sold Out.” Rita Tushingham and Robert Ross hosted the event, which started with songs from the lovely Lola Lamour. Veteran singing star Terry Dene (star of ‘The Golden Disc’) is still hitting the rock’n’roll groove in his 80s. He discussed his career in an interview followed by a Q&A session. It was quite a coup for TPTV to get the wonderful Stephanie Beacham on stage and she delivered a fun and interesting interview. Stars of ‘The Knack,’ Rita Tushingham and Ray Brooks, were reunited on stage and both gave some great insights into the industry at that time. Films screened included rare newsreel appearances by top TPTV stars. It was fun to spot the actors in their younger days in the wartime short ‘We Serve’, which acted as a taster for the Imperial War Museum Season on TPTV. It was good to feel the warmth of audience appreciation for TPTV during a joint interview with Noel and Sarah, discussing the channel’s continuing rise in popularity. We were treated to a wonderful performance from the Plaza’s original Compton organ, which brought back memories of the era of cinema-going. It was a treat to go to the signing area, meet the stars and get their- autographs. There were also many interesting film-related stalls – in cluding young Archie on the Renown stand – adding to a successful and enjoyable event. It flew by and all too soon it was time to make our way home...but at least there’s more to come next Spring!

Linda Robinson writes: “I would like to say, how much we enjoyed the TPTV festival in Stockport… Stephanie Beacham interviewed by Jenny Hanley told funny stories about Marlon Brando being protective, in a scene where she was naked, he turned up in baggy wide pants and boots. Joan Collins insisted on calling her Sybil instead of Sable in ‘Dynasty’ rehearsals, ‘no one is called Sable’, she said. Barbara Stanwyck told her never to wear long earrings and Linda Evans shuffled about in slippers. was also very gallant towards her and she mentioned working with William Roach on Coronation Street and how they supported each other in a time of distress. Ray Brooks was very funny and laid back, as if he was chatting with friends. He couldn’t remember all the films he was in, as he said, he was so busy earning a living. Once he had to carry , but dropped him, as he was quite heavy. Dirk wasn’t happy! He also told a story about Michael Crawford who he threatened to kill after one too many takes – tongue in cheek, of course! Rita Tushingham described working at the Everyman Theatre in when she was young and how she got her first film role. We enjoyed the Cronin family interview and hearing how TPTV came about. Noel and Sarah really do care about people. The channel is a saviour for millions of us, some living alone, others in poor health, some suffering bereavement. Another little star is Archie Cronin, only 10, yet so mature and polite, he worked hard entertaining us. John Thrope from A lovely young lady had us singing along to Doris Day and Carmen Miranda Lancashire writes… songs. The day went so fast and it was a truly feel good day, that we thoroughly “What a triumph for all enjoyed. The Plaza is a wonderful building, management and staff were sweet and concerned! I do hope you helpful. The stalls were all very interesting. Thank you to all at Renown and TPTV will be doing another one for the joy you give me.” in Stockport next year”… 17 David Nixon’s Christmas Magic OUR PRICE £15.00 RRP: £29.99 with FREE UK POSTAGE Call Us Now On Freephone: 0808 178 8212 Or 01923 290555 Run Time: 107 mins approx 1 Disc |Year: 1974-1975 Director: Peter Frazer-Jones Stars: David Nixon, Lynsey de Paul, Aimi MacDonald, Robert Harbin, George Carl, Caterina Valente and Shari Lewis with Lamb Chop. 18 Spotlight on GEORGE MINTER Born: 7th May 1911 Died: 8th July 1966 Possibly one of the most important names in British film history, George Minter, is remembered today mostly as a “Film Presenter,” of some of the finest British classic films of all time. Reference books, however, and even the internet, reduce his name and achievements to mere footnotes. Born James George Minter on 7 May 1911 in London, in 1939, he married Cecile Visco, a glove maker and designer and moved to Kensington, London. He was learning his craft and would soon hold a major place in the British film industry. Not only a film producer and head of Renown Pictures, a film producing and distributing company, he was also a certified accountant. His astute business knowledge and insight into the industry ensured that Minter would provide cinema with some of the greatest classics of his era. He was uncredited executive producer on No Orchids for Miss Blandish (1948) and Old Mother Riley’s Jungle Treasure (1950), but his first major motion picture presentation was Scrooge (1951). Having secured Alastair Sim and an all-star cast, Minter negotiated with Rank to secure Jack Warner for the role of Mr Jorkin. Acclaimed as the greatest cinematic interpretation of the Dickens’ novel, it was an immediate hit at the box office and continues to be the best-loved version to this day. Minter’s next all-star adaptation was Tom Brown’s School Days (1951). He was determined to film the story as accurately as possible and during a rare publicity appearance, allowed himself to be photographed registering his document of co-operation from the governing body at Rugby School, where it was filmed. He made a strict contract with Robert Newton, who was a notorious drinker, ensuring that Newton went on “the wagon” until the film was completed. The Pickwick Papers (1952) was another success in his run of literary classics. Virtually every film he lent his name to came up trumps. Grand National Night (1953), Our Girl Friday (1953) a comedy with Joan Collins, Kenneth More and George Cole. The Scamp (1957) gave a wonderful role and for Tread Softly Stranger (1958), starring Diana Dors, George Baker and Terence Morgan, Minter presented the film and wrote the screenplay. Another well-crafted thriller followed with The Rough and the Smooth (1959), starring Tony Britton, Nadja Tiller and William Bendix. Dentist in the Chair (1960) starred , and Peggy Cummins. His final film was the classicBeat Girl (1960) with David Farrar, Noelle Middleton, Gillian Hills and Christopher Lee. Oliver Reed, Shirley Anne Field and Adam Faith, in smaller support roles, all went on to greater stardom…. As did Carol White who made an uncredited appearance in a café-bar scene. Minter’s films remain popular, many achieving “classic” status. Minter died on 8 July 1966. His estate was valued at £43,561.00 – an astute businessman to the end. 19 Carry On Christmas Box Set The Four Original Christmas TV Specials OUR PRICE £15 with FREE UK POSTAGE Call Us Now On Freephone: 0808 178 8212 Or 01923 290555 Run Time: 289 mins approx 2 Discs |Year: 1969, 1970, 1972, 1973 Stars: Sid James, Barbara Windsor, Hattie Jacques, Charles Hawtrey, Bernard Bresslaw, Terry Scott, Peter Butterworth, Frankie Howerd, Kenneth Connor, Wendy Richard, , Valerie Leon and more.
