I also remember the music that would be played Police, Journey, April Wine, Phil Collins. Bill alway be proud of yourself for what you have achieved in the Air-Force you have done really well. I have always been proud of you. I have always missed you since you left Heyford! I hope things change for you one day and that you will come back. Miss you Delta.

E-Mail: [email protected] City/Country: Oxford England Guestbook Entry: I started going to Upper Heyford in the early Eighties. I met a great guy there called Bill he worked on the flight line and we really had some great times going to the NCO Club and he would come to Oxford at the weekend and I would show him around Oxford, the Colleges the Musuems and the pubs (The Grapes). When we went to London that was great going to Buckingham Palace and going to London Bridge and Tower Bridge and Soho and going to the pubs. But most weekends would go to the base and stay over wernt suppose to do that really, but it was good fun. Sometimes we would go down to the 3 horse shoes pub have a game of darts and pool which was good. I remember this pizza place on base, they done some of the best pizza. Still keep in contact with Bill he came back to England a few years ago and hoping he will come back to England again one day. Its sad to see Heyford now as it is, I went there in January of this year the first time in many years, and it is like a ghost town but everything basically still looks the same, went down to and the 3 horse shoes is no longer there, that has been made into 2 houses now. I think Upper Heyford will be missed by many of us. Duane you have done a great job on this website of yours. Delta.

E-Mail: [email protected] City/Country: Portland OR Guestbook Entry: I was at the 2130th Comm Sq, Croughton, (64-67) after extending six months for a consec o/s tour. If I hadn't always wanted to visit the UK, my prior eighteen months with the 1950th Comm at beautiful Wheelus AB, Tripoli, Libya alone would have made the UK seem like Heaven. Extended another six months toward the end of my tour. 3AF said no more extensions, so Col G went to South Ruislip and got me another six months then they cut me off in spite of my offering to re-up for an open-ended enlistment. Croughton was the ultimate assignment - check out my email address!!! I've been back to the UK TWENTY TIMES since 1967 and have visited the old base most of those trips, being given a wonderful reception in spite of ongoing security concerns. (I guess I look harmless.) I was in the Orderly House in Admin and I am in contact with Keith Spindler (Personnel) and Vance Shannon (NCOIC of Base Comm).

Season's greetings, folks!

I married a British girl, and had to sell my Triumph 500 bike,we bought a 65 Impala, and when the gas lines got too long at Heyford bought a little Mini, that car was great on gas,but the engine would drown out sometimes in the rain, and there was a lot of rain!!. I'll always regret getting out of the Air Force in 74,but they were not accepting prior service at that time,so I joined the Army, made rank quicker, and was able to retire in 20 years as 1st Sgt[E-8] after Desert Storm in 91,I enjoyed being stationed with 101st Airborne, but will never forget my time at UH.Great Memories!!.

I have mixed emotions about my time there, we had good and bad times, but in hindsight they always look a little better over time. I remember the people I met the most though and think of them always. One I remember is the late Jerome "Jerry" Green, we were together from our first day of basic training to the day we were discharged and I was the witness at his wedding, may Jerry rest in peace. I would love to hear from his wife. I would also like to know if these other people are reading any of these pages: Steve Fortelka, Jim Becktold, Ric Gill, Jim Englebrecht, Bob Barth, Jerry Fuson, Jim Thiele and two (2) Garys, one my crewchief and one who lived across the hall from me and crawled to the hospital one night with appendicitis rather than waking me up. I will always thank you for that Gary, I needed that rest. Oh and how could I leave out "Headly". It seemed to me that in a way we were all a little bit of family. I hope you are all doing well. I miss my friends Maureen Gowing and Michelle Osborne, in Cheltenham, the most though and I hope you are all in good health and doing well. I think of you always. I would love to hear from any of you.

E-Mail: [email protected] City/Country: Buffalo, NY, USA Guestbook Entry: I was stationed at Heyford from 1970-73 as a '903'in the 20th TAC Hosp. Was on the judo team, played drums for the Afro-Dimension for a while and just did stuff! It was some of the best years of my life.I got married in 1972 and we are still married. I made 2 trips back, one in 1984. A neighborhood kid was a Sky Cop then and toured the base with my sons, as we came to the UK for a family vacation.Went back in 1996 for a family visit. My father in law said Heyford was closed.I couldn't believe my ears so I went to see and man, it was SAD! I felt like a World War II vet. But as I peered through the closed gates, I could still hear some of the laughter we shared. To those who remember me will be surprised that I am now a 'Rev.' but God has a sense of humor! This is a great site and I will visit it periodically. All the best...

E-Mail: [email protected] City/Country: Lyons, Georgia USA Guestbook Entry: I arrived at RAF Upper Heyford on 11 Jan 1973. At the time there was a NATO TAC/EVAL inspection going on. We were told we could not process into the base until it was over so we took our pay records which we hand carried back then to the finance office and drew advance pay and headed to London for the weekend. I was put on "A" Shift where I stayed during my time there. During the 2 years I was stationed there we had a lot of alerts due to IRA threats among other things. I met my first wife just one week after arriving at Heyford. Another airman wanted me to meet the girl he was going to marry (he forgot to tell her he was already married with several children). We went to the Reserve club in Banbury where I found out she was in the British Army Reserves. Needless to say we were married on April 21 of that year. I have many, many fond memories of RAF Upper Heyford and the surrounding countryside and still correspond with some of my ex-inlaws. I would love to hear from anyone stationed there during those years or any of the many British people who I knew and have lost touch with.

E-Mail: [email protected] City/Country: Chicagoland, IL. Guestbook Entry: It was really great to stumble across this page. Every now and then, I will sit and think about the four years I spent at Upper Heyford. I was a member of the 20th SPS then later 7320 SPG from 84 - 88. It seems to me I worked all flights at one time but a majority of the time I spent with the BOHICA flight. Bend Over Here It Comes Again!! I also did a stint with Law Enforcement after the bombing of Libya.

I was the originator of Upper Heyford's first Theatre Group which lovingly became know as The Harry Blacker Admiration Society after it's first production. I was also a member of the Choraleers, the base's choir group....I served as the Master of Cermonies for at least 2 Dining In/Dining Out's....I also competed in base level and UK level talent shows for Tops in Blues.

I made many friends while I was at Upper Heyford. Some were Air Force brats, some were dependents, some were from the UK, and some served right beside me. I miss you all. If anyone remembers me, please contact me. It would be great to hear from you. Take care and thanks for the memories.

We continually had exercises and went for long periods of time wearing our gas masks. Gotta love it now. It was always good for a short nap! I miss alot of things about the base and country. the Brown Dirby (getting a taco pizza), to just hanging out and partying at the barracks. It's funny how many of us had state of art stereos back thing. There always seemed to be some competition over who was going to buy a better, louder stereo! I miss going to London, Oxford and traveling around the country. I miss the friends and the friendships we developed back then. We were FAMILY. We were all in a foreign country, most of us single, being away from home for the first time. Wow, what an experience! I look back on the photos on the web site and am really disappointed in the sad state of the facilities. Our government had put some many dollars into the base, what a shame that it goes to pot! Well, if you know of me, or want to chat about the good old Heyford days, shot me an email at [email protected]

Would love to hear from you and your experiences on Heyford!

The Fighting 55th has been with the 20th since 1930. And I believe that the 20th FW is unique in having its three squdrons 55th, 77th and 79th assigned throughout its history. Although, I'm 77th TFS its is sad to see our proud sister strike her colors. Art Sevigny 20th FW Association Historian

E-Mail: [email protected] City/Country: Evergreen, Colorado Comments: This is an update and renewed entry which includes my new email address. I was with the 1st Aviation Field Depot Squadron(SAC) which was one of the units that reopened Upper Heyford after WWII. We arrived at "Upper Haystack" in 1951 while the US Army Engineers were extending the runways to handle B-29's, C-124's, etc. We went on TDY to Sculthorpe that winter(Brrrr!) and came back to Upper Heyford in the spring of '52. B-47's on TDY eventually replaced B-29's and 50's. I returned to the States in August '54, was discharged, and enrolled at the University of Missouri. I not only enjoyed working with a fine group of men in the 1st AFDS, but enjoyed the UK to the point where I now go back to visit relatives.
