This year’s theme, Libraries = Strong Communities, illustrates how today’s libraries are at the heart of our cities, towns, schools and campuses, providing critical resources, programs and expertise. To celebrate National Library Week, Forsyth Library will host the following programs: Featured Displays -Learn about our Digital Collections and Preserving History -Love Your Library Interactive Display Make A Button with Special Collections Monday, April 8, 11am-2pm Forsyth Library, Main Floor Interact with the Archives Pop-Up Exhibit Tuesday, April 9, 9am-12pm Forsyth Library, Main Floor Tiger Tots Storytime Thursday, April 11, 10-11am Forsyth Library, Prairie Painting Area Like Forsyth Library on social media @fhsulibrary to learn more about these activities and to see staff highlights throughout the week. Celebrate National Undergraduate Research Week: April 8 Each day, we will be sharing tips for mentoring undergraduate scholars. 1. Set clear and well scaffolded expectations for undergraduate researchers. Develop a tentative schedule for completion of various aspects of the project and discuss the hours your student is expected to maintain. 2. Balance rigorous expectations and emotional support and appropriate personal interest in students. Make an effort to get to know your student on an informal basis. This can facilitate a comfortable working relationship as well as opportunities for discussion future aspirations and options. 3. Build community among groups of undergraduate researchers and mentors, including graduate students, s, and any other members of the research team. A great way to do this is to have regular, weekly meetings with the entire research group. 4. Make yourself available. Dedicate time as well as one-on-one, hands-on mentoring 5. Increase student ownership of the research over time 6. Support students’ professional development through networking and explaining norms of the discipline. 7. Create intentional, laddered opportunities for peers and “near peers” to learn mentoring skills and to bring larger numbers of undergraduates into scholarly opportunities. 8. Encourage students to share their findings and provide guidance on how to do so effectively in oral and poster presentations and in writing. - from “Ten Salient Practices of Undergrad Research Mentor” http://www.elon.edu/docs/e- web/academics/teaching/Shanahan%20et%20al%20(2015).pdf Sponsored by the Undergraduate Research Experience Steering Group For more information, contact Leslie Paige [email protected] Forsyth Library Presents a Century of Little Blue Books The exhibit “A Century of Little Blue Books” is now on display on the main floor of Forsyth Library.
