And Type the TITLE of YOUR WORK in All Caps BORDERS AND BOUNDARIES: HISTORICAL DISCOURSES IN SEVENTEENTH- CENTURY WOMEN’S LIFE WRITING by JESSICA ANNE WALKER (Under the Direction of Frances Teague) ABSTRACT The English Renaissance is a period of interest in historiography and national consciousness, as well as a period in which women were starting to make their voices heard, despite the unacceptability of women's writing and public discourse. This dissertation seeks to explore the effect of historiography and national consciousness on women and how their writing fits into (or how women find their places outside) important cultural and literary developments between the Protestant Reformation and the Restoration of the English monarchy following the English Civil War. It establishes the sixteenth-century historiographical, literary, and gender contexts that contributed to the development of seventeenth-century women's historiography and life writing and explores how the limitations of women's education in the sixteenth century cut them off from participation in discourse about national identity and history and how those discourses began to evolve and change throughout the Stuart period. In order to uncover how these issues are at work in seventeenth-century women's life writing, this dissertation examines the diaries, memoirs, and literary output of Anne Clifford, Anne Halkett, Ann Fanshawe, Lucy Hutchinson, and Margaret Cavendish. The simultaneous experiences of war, which encourages women to speak of important events in their lives, and exile, which drives them beyond the strictly enforced boundaries of home and nation, undermine the dominant discourses of silence and enclosure that had discouraged women's writing. As a result, these women write across multiple points of fracture: disunity within the English state; the problem of writing national experience from outside the bounds of the nation; and the tension between urge to record and analyze their experiences for public consumption and the discourse that forbids them from doing so. With increased learning among the laity and middle classes came increased access to historical knowledge, and a new sense of English identity, fueled by the Protestant Reformation, both sprang from and created a demand for English historical narratives (Burke 18-19; Rackin ix, 5). In addition to these social changes, the Renaissance also marked a time of increased access to literary discourses through education and Reformation for women as well as men. If women did not “have a Renaissance,” as Joan Kelly- Gadol famously argued, they certainly lived through one, but their participation in such discourses was severely limited. As English historiography progressed from the national narratives of the sixteenth century to the life writing of the seventeenth, how did historiography and national consciousness affect women, and how did they fit into, or find themselves ostracized from, important cultural and literary developments of the period between the Reformation and the Restoration? A close examination of women's historical texts, through the lenses of both early modern historiography and the study of early modern Englishwomen's writing culture, reveals how women gradually came to express their places in history and how their contributions to historiography and life writing fit into a broader context of the development of literature from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine five cases of seventeenth- century women's life writing to show how these women writers used language to cope with 2 anxieties about space, genre, authorship, and trauma. In order to fully understand the pressures and opportunities with which history and historiography presented these women, we must first understand the social and literary contexts which preceded and surrounded them. Therefore, this chapter will examine the rise of English historiography, nationalism, and women's writing during the sixteenth century, while the second will explore how changes wrought by the seventeenth century helped bring about the forms of women's self-expression with which this dissertation is concerned. The chief change that characterizes Renaissance historiography is an increased interest in “second causes,” the “effects of political situations and the impact of human will and capabilities” (Rackin 6). The role that human beings—specifically, men—played in shaping their own history was of paramount importance to understanding the unfolding of events. In a time of jarring social and religious change, history offered important lessons to its students, who believed it could “inspire the living, reveal the secrets of statecraft, teach the details of military tactics, expose the deceits of fortune, and illuminate the ways of providence” (Rackin 3). As the disparate loyalties of the feudal era became increasingly unified under a centralized government, and a sense of nationalism increased through events such as the Reformation, the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and colonial expansion into Ireland and the New World, the English turned to their history to shape national identity,

The latter trend is not monolithic either, since some projects bear the mark of the late Althusser’s idiosyncratic re- imagining of a Lucretian ‘aleatory materialism’,3 while others locate themselves in the territory of Deleuze’s or Michel Serres’s revival of Lucretius,4 the latter being perhaps the first of a series of studies fixated on the clinamen, culminating with S. Greenblatt’s The Swerve.5 These interpretive trends are touched on in David Norbrook’s elegant introduction to this volume. The present volume is less concerned with subterranean, counter-histories of philosophy (or politics, or literature); it focuses on De rerum natura (hereafter DRN)’s ‘language and material circulation, as a means of refining generalizations about Epicurean philosophy’ (2), on ‘the specific material and cultural contexts in which the DRN was interpreted’ in early modern culture (12).

    ABSTRACT To Teach, Move, Meditate, and Oppose: Lucy Hutchinson’s Rhetoric in Order and Disorder Christina Iluzada, B.A., Ph.D. Mentor: Phillip J. Donnelly, Ph.D. Lucy Hutchinson’s biblical poetic paraphrase, Order and Disorder, employs rhetorical strategies that enable her to teach and move her audience, meditate for her own spiritual benefit, and oppose the atomistic doctrine of Lucretius. In this dissertation, I begin to examine the poem using a rhetorical analysis that draws upon the Aristotelian causes as a framework. The poem’s final cause is to persuade Dissenting readers to trust and praise divine Providence and to pursue virtue; its formal cause is a type of plain style that relies upon tropes and sparingly employs schemes; and its material cause is the biblical story that the poem paraphrases, while weaving other biblical texts, images, and ideas into the Genesis narrative. This analysis of Hutchinson’s Non-Conformist rhetoric sheds light on the Calvinist Dissenter plain style, demonstrating how her interpretive strategies align with her Biblicism and distinguish her writing from Enlightenment rationalist notions of “plain.” It also reads the poem as a meditation, showing that Hutchinson’s rhetoric functions both to persuade herself as well as her Dissenting readers in the midst of difficult political and personal circumstances in the aftermath of the Restoration. This analysis of the character of Non-Conformist rhetoric highlights the various ways in which Hutchinson’s poem contests Lucretius’s atomism and epistemology. This study sketches a more thorough picture of Hutchinson’s rhetorical aesthetic than scholars have yet completed. It demonstrates that this seventeenth-century woman’s biblical epic poem places her in the position of not only a poet but also a teacher of doctrine, a rhetorician who moves her audience, a private Christian meditating on Scripture for the sake of her own soul, and an intellectual who directly counters Lucretian philosophy.

    ABSTRACT Analogy, Causation, and Beauty in the Works of Lucy Hutchinson Evan Jay Getz, Ph.D. Dissertation Chairperson: Phillip J. Donnelly, Ph.D. Lucy Hutchinson's translation of the ancient epic De Rerum Natura is remarkable in light of her firm commitments to Calvinist theology and the doctrine of Providence. David Norbrook and Jonathan Goldberg offer strikingly different explanations for the translation exercise. For instance, Norbrook argues that Hutchinson translates Lucretius in order that she might learn from the false images in Lucretius and make better ones in such works as Order and Disorder (Norbrook, “Margaret” 191). In contrast, Goldberg argues for compatibility between Lucretian atomism and Hutchinson‟s Christianity, seeing no contradiction or tension (Goldberg 286). I argue that neither critic accounts for the aesthetics of beauty in Hutchinson's poetry; both critics instead attribute an aesthetics of the sublime to Hutchinson. In making this argument, I show that Hutchinson's theory of causation has much in common with Reformed Scholasticism, whereby she is able to restore a metaphysics of formal and final cause. Hutchinson also revives the doctrine of the analogy of being, or analogia entis, in order to show that the formal cause of creation is visible as God's glory. After a discussion of her metaphysics and ontology, I then show that Hutchinson's poetry reflects a theological aesthetics of beauty and not the aesthetics of the sublime. In the fourth chapter, I compare the typological accounts of Abraham found in Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan and Hutchinson's Order and Disorder with a view to virtue as the proper basis of authority.

Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, authorship and its related terms, “author” and “authority,” were never static. Such malleability resonated with early modern perceptions of the female body as inherently shifty, a troubling notion to patriarchal ideologies that desired authority over women. Constituting male authorship through the female body was a way to stabilize masculine authority. Men became authors while women remained passive texts. My project, however, disrupts this patriarchal narrative of authorship. Drawing upon scholarship by Jeffrey Masten, Wendy Wall, and Margaret Ezell that rethinks early modern authorship as gendered, collaborative, and social, I shift focus away from the physical production of texts to consider authorship in terms of the generation of narratives--textual, historical, political, and theological. I examine common tropes of the female body (maternal body, female martyr, wife’s corpse, and female ghost) to restore “author” as a verb rather than a noun. Doing so historicizes female authorship as integral to gender, political, and religious hierarchies. Covering a wide generic breadth of texts ranging from the early Reformation to the Restoration (1546-1664), my project provides nuanced close-readings of women’s and men’s writing to illuminate the ubiquitous nature of embodied female authorship throughout early modern culture. My first chapter uses the metaphor of the pregnant male wit who labors to birth literary creations to re-read representations of the maternal body as producers of theological narratives in midwife manuals, Milton’s Paradise Lost, and Dorothy Leigh’s The Mother’s Blessing.
