Introduction

Blessed with some of the most gorgeous countryside in Europe, if not the world (not to mention perhaps the best wine around), Burgundy is a place everyone should explore at least once. On this one week riverboat cruise holiday you get to experience this wonderful area from the deck of a beautiful river barge - the Daniele, while peacefully cruising along rivers and canals. There are options each day to go ashore and explore either on foot or by bike, and with e-bikes availble to rent this can still very much be a gentle relaxing activity. Visit small villages, first-rate wineries, bike through vineyards and forests, all whilst soaking up the glorious sunshine, and at the end of the day sit back and relax on deck with a glass of wine in hand and fully take in the atmosphere of this amazing region.

Explore International. This holiday is part of our Explore International range. Participants on these trips can book through KE or through one of our international partners. This helps us to gather together sufficient numbers of like-minded adventurers to get your holiday up and running quickly. Led by an English-speaking guide, the cosmopolitan nature of these groups can be an important part of the experience!

Is this holiday for you?

This is principally a touring and sightseeing holiday. There'll be some light walking and cycling, suitable for most fitness levels. For the cycling, E-bikes are available to hire. The cycling sections are between 8km and 35km and are mainly flat with some undulating sections - for the longer rides you will have all day to cover this. All cabins are en- suite, with twin or double beds.

All excursions are optional and so you are very welcome to relax on board for the day if you do not fancy the activity for that day.

Holiday Itinerary

Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in Dijon.

Meet at the group hotel in Dijon. There will be a welcome meeting at the hotel at 6pm, when all specific details for the following days will be talked through.

ACCOMMODATION  HOTEL

Day 2: Free time in Dijon. Transfer to Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune. Board the riverboat in the late afternoon.

After breakfast at the hotel we have some free time to explore the city of Dijon. The Lonely Planet describes Dijon as 'one of France's most appealing cities', with options such as visiting the Church of Notre-Dame of Dijon which is considered a masterpiece of 13th century gothic architecture, the Ducal Palace which was originally built as a small fortress and rebuilt in the latter half of the 14th century by Philip the Bold, or simply take the time to wonder, take in the atmosphere or watch the world pass by at a traditional café; we can see why they say this. In the afternoon we meet back at the hotel for our transfer (about 1.5 hours) to the riverboat; The Daniele - our home for the next 5 nights. ACCOMMODATION  MEALS BD  BOAT

Day 3: Sail from Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune to Chagny with optional wine tasting.

Our first breakfast on board this morning, most likely out on deck, where we can start to really appreciate the calm and beauty of this region. We can either spend the full morning relaxing on board or opt to walk in the vineyards of Santenay and even indulge in a wine tasting before returning to the boat for lunch on board. In the afternoon we continue cruising to Chagny; here we can opt for a nature walk in the wonderfully lush surroundings, or take a taxi to a local winery. ACCOMMODATION  MEALS B  BOAT

Day 4: Cycle alongside vineyards to Chalon-sur-Saône and tour the famous Chateau de Chassagne- Montrachet.

Today we can be a little more energetic and cycle along the Côte de , stopping at villages and vineyards along the way - the ride today is mainly flat with a few gentle inclines (E-bikes are also available to hire upon request) and a fantastic way to experience quintessential Burgundy. In total we will cover about 30km. The mornings ride takes us to Puligny-Montrachet; a perfect place to have lunch before a tour of the famous Chateau de Chassagne-Montrachet, with a chance to explore the cellers dating back to the 11th and 14th centuries and learn about the complexity of the grape growth in this region. From here we continue on bikes to Chalon-sur- Saône, passing through small towns and being surrounded by vineyards along the way. ACCOMMODATION  MEALS BL  BOAT

Day 5: Cruise from Chalon-sur-Saône to Saint-Jean-de- with a stop at Saint-Jean-de-Losne.

A day for taking in the atmosphere as we cruise to Saint-Jean-de-Losne. In the afternoon we can opt to go ashore and walk through the old part of Saint-Jean-de-Losne, wander through quiet streets, explore the quaint shops or relax with a drink in the cathedral square. Saint-Jean-de-Losne is one of the capitals for the river barging world and is located at a crossroads of waterways, meaning the local cafes are often occupied by regulars of the canal barges and riverboats - a great time to practice our French!  MEALS BL

Day 6: Cruise from Saint-Jean-de-Losne to Petit Ouges.

The morning and early afternoon are spent on board - possibly relaxing on the terrace in the sunshine, watching the surrounding area unfold. As we get closer to Petit Ouges we can hop a shore to either walk or cycle along the canal as our barge makes her way into port (or of course we can simply stay on board and continue relaxing). The walk or cycle route is about is 8km and takes you around the lush gardens of Chateau de Longecourt; a typical Burgundy castle, before meeting up with the barge again in Petit Ouges - with time to freshen up and order a glass of wine before dinner. ACCOMMODATION  MEALS BLD  BOAT

Day 7: Cycle from Petit-Ouges to Dijon with wine tasting and a cellar tour.

Today we leave the barge and the canal behind for a full day cycling tour through the Cote de Nuits region, along the Route des Grands Crus. Along the route we pass never ending vineyards and arguably some of the most picturesque villages in the region, including Chenove, Marsannay-la-Cote, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, and Chambolle-, before arriving in the quaint village of . This first section is around 18km. In

Vougeot we enjoy a wine tasting tour and cellar visit in a local chateau; there is also the option here to visit the vineyard where some of the most expensive wines are produced. The second section of cycling today is about 20km and takes us all the way to Dijon, where a well-deserved dinner on deck awaits. ACCOMMODATION  MEALS BD  BOAT

Day 8: Departure Day - Transfer to Dijon train station.

After breakfast, a group transfer is provided to the train station in Dijon. Trains departing from Dijon can be booked after 10am.

If you're flying out of Paris today, please note that it is approx 340km away. The group will be dropped off at the Dijon train station in the morning - we recommend not booking flights until the evening (departing after 7pm) to allow enough time to travel to Paris.  MEALS B

Group Tour Leaders

All of our holidays are accompanied by an experienced leader, some of whom have worked with KE groups for many years. Many are professional guides and instructors with an unrivalled knowledge of the areas in which they work. In many parts of the world, we recruit local guides with appropriate training and experience. In addition to having the technical skills to ensure your safety, KE expects its leaders to be active members of the group. A leader should be fun to travel with and ready to share with you their enthusiasm for adventure travel and their knowledge of the area. Alongside the group leader, there will be a local support crew, which could be just a driver, or a complete team of guides, drivers, porters, mule-herders and cooks. The hard work of our support crews, along with the fascinating insight they can offer into their local culture, is integral to providing you with the very best adventure travel experience.

Sustainable Tourism

Since we ran our first trip in 1984, we have been committed keeping the world's most beautiful places pristine by minimising our environmental impact. Recognising the fragility of the world's wilderness environments, we keep our groups small and operate according to a ‘Mountain Code’, which is provided to all groups, trek leaders, agents and staff. We make sure that our local staff are well treated and well paid, we respect indigenous cultures, take care to protect the environment of the places we visit and take every opportunity to make a positive contribution wherever we travel. Our philosophy of 'leaving nothing but footprints' has been integral to KE's approach right from the start over 30 years ago. In recognition of our efforts we are proud to have achieved the highest award of 5 Stars for Sustainable Tourism by AITO.

We continue to travel responsibly, and more information on our policy, practice, and specific projects can be found at www.keadventure.com, and on the website of our partner charity the Juniper Trust: www.junipertrust.co.uk. KE's Mountain Code is issued to our staff, trek leaders and overseas agents, and we recommend it to our clients, too!

Booking Your Holiday

The easiest way to make your booking is online. You will need to pay a deposit at the time of booking. This is normally £200 but for some holidays with special permit fees or internal flights, this may be more. The amount of deposit required for an individual holiday is given on the dates and prices page of the holiday. Late bookings will require full payment. We cannot confirm any booking until we receive your fully completed booking form.

Adventure Travel Insurance

It is a condition of joining any of our trips that you are insured against medical and personal accident risks (to include repatriation costs, air ambulance and helicopter rescue services). We also strongly recommend that you take out holiday cancellation insurance, as all deposits paid are non-refundable. Please ensure that your insurer is aware of your KE Adventure itinerary and can agree to cover the activities being undertaken. You will then need to advise us of your policy details and complete an Insurance Declaration Form.

CAMPBELL IRVINE DIRECT travel insurance is available to EU residents and will cover the majority of KE Adventure holidays. It has been designed to provide cover for activities normally excluded by other insurers such as trekking, mountain biking and climbing.
