Sage Academy 2018 Workshop Descriptions

Week 1: July 9 - 13 AM: 9 - 11:45am 1. Magic: The Gathering - Creatures. Enchantments. And artifacts. (Oh my!) Have you ever ​ wanted to learn how to play Magic: The Gathering but thought the rules were too complicated? Or maybe you have an idea for a theme that runs 2 (or more!) colors and wonder how to best build a deck? Or are you someone who already knows how to play and wants a space to trade and play with others? Magic: the Gathering is for players of ALL abilities and card collections and if you can turn a playing card diagonally, then you already know how to play!

2. Comic Creators Camp - So you are interested in writing comics? Perhaps you are a ​ passionate artist, or you just like to write, and feel that you are ready to write a comic book. Go for it! You never know, you could have the next most popular comic book series. You’ll never know until you try! Come join us for a week of fun while you create your very own Comic Strip using LEGOS® and Mini-Figures to create your very own backgrounds and characters. Students will use tablets, cameras and specialized LEGO® software to customize and create their very own Comic Strip Story!

3. Super Sports Camp - A great option to keep your child active in the summer! This camp will ​ focus on various sports- basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer & more. Campers will work on developing skills & will implement their skills in game-like settings!

PM: 12:15-3pm 1. Transformation Creations Camp - Transformers in Disguise, come see what your model ​ will transform into. Get ready to build and discover how your model transforms! Campers will love the mash-up of combination models that can be rebuilt into something different. These awesome 2-in-1 models will include exciting characters, robots, vehicles and more! Follow the step-by-step building plans and ignite your inner engineer by using your imagination to transform your model into something unique. Join us for this fun-filled camp where you’ll use your creativity and engineering skills to build and transform!

2. Around the World - . . Dango. . . . ​ Whatever you call them and however people like eat them, variations of dumplings can be found in cultures all over the world. In this class, students will learn a little bit about the different types of dumplings around the world, how to make them, and how to enjoy them like the locals do.

3. Fitness Frenzy Camp - Experience fitness the fun way! The road to fitness doesn’t have to be ​ boring or routine. At Fitness Frenzy Camp, campers can choose from a variety of activities and sports that add diversity to their exercise routine. There’s something for all levels, personalities and body types. Our excellent fitness program includes exercise and physical activity. There is a difference between the two but learning how to enjoy both is a key part of being successful at home.

Week 2: July 16 - 20 AM: 9 - 11:45am 1. Meta Girls STEAM Program -Meta Girls uses games and team building activities and ​ ​ tabletop games to build confidence in girls’ STEAM skills. Each day, kids will learn about a STEAM skill and a related game skill and practice it with a group challenge and then in a tabletop game. They'll then put their learning to use by creating their own game complete with art and packaging.

2. Mining & Crafting Camp - Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you ​ can imagine. At night monsters come out, make sure to build shelter before that happens. Experience the world of Minecraft with LEGO® Bricks in this fun summer camp! Students will start by crafting their shelters and some of the mobs, critters and tools using LEGO® bricks. Students will face new challenges each day, building models and crafting key elements from the popular Minecraft game.

3. ASSEMBLY Line: - Computers are the thinking machines that make the world run, but how ​ ​ does the computer think? How does the computer put 2 and 2 together to output 4? Within this class we will discuss what binary is, and how it relates to the logic being used by the computer. We will explore how to count as a dolphin, how a lightbulb can spell words, and eventually, how to build an adding calculator.

PM: 12:15 - 3pm 1. Adventures in Making - This week long narrative driven makerspace class will give you the ​ ​ chance to learn how to use some pretty big tools, while solving real world engineering challenges and building cool structures, tools, and robots. Students will have the opportunity to learn 3d design and print out their creations using a 3D printer and will even get to use our laser cutter to build custom signs and structures. Each day will have a new design challenge where students will be put to the task of finding, designing, and building there way through to a solution.

2.War Machine Physics - This class is designed for kids to get a hands-on feel of concepts in ​ ​ physics, including gravity, acceleration, velocity and projectile motion through building machines, like catapults, bean shooters, and more. Kids will reinforce their learning by designing, creating, testing and redesigning their projects to improve their performance and discuss the errors involved in measurement.

3. The Hero’s Journey, A Cross Curricular Adventure - The Hero’s Journey program is a ​ ​ cross-curricular adventure that combines improvisational theater techniques, creative problem solving, physical movement, writing skills, STEM, character education, life skills and team building in a hands-on, interactive narrative that follows the main points of Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. Kids can become the hero of their own adventure, defining and overcoming obstacles, both real and imagined though provoking group and individual activities and then venture into the woods to solve the mystery of the blight in the fictional Town of Woodhearst, and have the opportunity to save the day. Children will create an character to play and define their character’s strengths and weaknesses. The goal of this program is for children to gain self-confidence and skills, improve their ability to compromise and cooperate, self-advocate, make friends and ignite their creativity.

Week 3: July 23 - 27 AM: 9 - 11:45am 1. Let’s Zumba - Zumba helps develop a healthy lifestyle and incorporate fitness as a natural ​ ​ part of children's lives by making fitness fun. Classes incorporate key childhood development elements like leadership, respect, teamwork, confidence, self-esteem, memory, creativity, coordination, cultural awareness. Zumba® Kids classes feature kid-friendly routines based on original Zumba® choreography. We break down the steps, add games, activities and cultural exploration elements into the class structure.

2.Worlds of Amusement Camp - "Worlds of Amusement" camp takes you on a thrilling ​ adventure building amusement park themed models. Get your ticket to ride at Bricks 4 Kidz® very own Motorized LEGO® Amusement Park! Campers will build a new ride each day, learning how to make things spin, roll, turn and rock. Spend time visiting the Wizard World by building your favorite wizard and his magical owl! Build and give your despicable yellow movie characters a thrilling roller coaster ride! Get your amusement park ticket stamped as you turn games, food, rides and attractions into exciting model builds. Motorized models maximize the action and the fun. Each camp day includes carnival- themed games, group challenges, model-building and sooo much more.

3. Writer's Workshop: Short Story Edition - Have you ever had a story that just needed to be ​ told? In this workshop, we will guide you through brainstorming, creating a rough draft, editing and presenting your final short story so that it's ready to take the world by storm! Traditionally, writer’s workshops are a place where students find topics which interest them, share their works-in-progress with each other, give and receiving peer responses to ideas, style, and structure of pieces, learn how to give constructive criticism to themselves as well as to their peers,learn skills and techniques of writing in the context of their own stories, poems, and pieces, learn new methods of expressing ideas through hearing what others have written and share the insights they’ve gained in their own writing. Part of this class will also be review of the basics and lessons in topics like, how to write descriptively, how to create a fictional world and how to capture an authentic narrative.

PM: 12:15 - 3pm 1. MakerBots - Battle Edition - In this intense week long class, students will be put together to ​ ​ make real robots using industry grade machines and parts and then put their designs to the test in various battle situations. Battle the terrane and battle each other in various match types. Students learn how to code microcontrollers, mini computers that help drive the robots, create using Automated tools, such as 3d printers, and our industrial grade laser cutter, experiment with different materials such as MDF, acrylic, and plywood, and learn in a fun and challenging way all of the things that go into designing and engineering their own amazing designs.

2. The Science of Harry Potter - Based on the popular book by Mark Brake and Jon Chase, ​ ​ kids will examine many aspects of the Harry Potter universe, from potions to astronomy and learn about the real-life scientific principles that could apply and work on activities and experiments to bring the concepts to life. Dive in with hands-on experiments, activities and projects that will bring the imagination to life and learn some awesome stuff along the way.

3. Badminton Mania - Learn the basics of this wonderful Racquet sport and enhance your ​ ​ ​ mobility, coordination skills, as well as teamwork. Our aim is to provide simple badminton drills ​ that will help teach players of all ages and abilities how to play badminton, and develop game specific techniques.

Week 4: July 30 - Aug 3 AM: 9 - 11:45am 1. Creative Computing & Hands-On Electronics - Tinker with electronics while learning the ​ basics of computer programming. We begin by experimenting with the fundamentals of electronics and circuitry, and step up to projects where our class of young makers will design their own interactive and programmable devices. Participants use the latest tools including Arduino (for building interactive devices) and Raspberry Pi (for learning about computers and coding) to experiment with LEDs, resistors, motors, and programming. Each class day gives participants the chance to design a hands-on project with the guidance of skilled Circuit Lab instructors.

2. Drawn By: You - Comics, they are not just for kids anymore. Come and learn how comics ​ ​ artists turn a doodle into a cartoon into a comic into a graphic novel. Stay and read comics and graphic novels from all around the world: United States, , France, Norway and Argentina to name a few. Finally, leave with your own collection of original comics written and drawn by none other than you. No prior experience drawing or making comics is required; only a strong motivation to learn and ask questions.

3. Basketball Camp - A great option to keep your child active in the summer! This camp will ​ focus on basketball, skill development, and having fun playing a great sport! Campers will work on dribbling, passing, shooting & working with a team in a game setting.

PM: 12:15 - 3pm 1. App Inventors - Want to know how the apps work on your phone or iPad? Or do you already ​ have the next great app idea, and just need to know how to make it? In this no-experience-required course course, we use MIT App Inventor software to make fun, creative apps for Android phones and tablets. Participants will learn both the programming and design aspects of creating great apps, and have the opportunity to build apps of their own design with the support of Circuit Lab instructors. 2. Robotics Systems & Electronics: Students will be instructed in robotic systems by ​ ​ ​ constructing a five axis robotic arm that is controlled by a remote control. Robots with working arms and hands will be demonstrated. Each participant will build,operate and keep a robotic arm. The electronics portion of the program will teach students about electronic components and circuits through a hands on approach utilizing electronics equipment and circuit kits. Topics such as AC, DC voltage and current as well as resistance,capacitance,inductance,transistors and integrated circuits will be explored. Students will learn to solder and build a transistor based LED flasher circuit that they will keep.

3. Chef’s Club is a hands-on cooking curriculum for young people entering grades 4-8. Our ​ ​ cooking classes introduce youth to the pleasures of preparing and enjoying food that is both nutritious and delicious - an essential step toward health and well-being. Students learn basic cooking skills, the joy of eating and cooking with fresh fruits and vegetables, and how to prepare their own simple snacks and meals!
