Fondly, Just as we entered darkness in March 2020, we are now seeing the light of hope as vaccinations have become available to not Snehal C. Dalal, MD, FAAOS only adults but our children. The risk of serious illness and death President, Georgia Orthopedic Society that plagued our country in the beginning of this year seemed to diminish, so we thought. COVID-19 had different plans and hit us with the Delta variant. Cases are rising but it seems to affect mostly the unvaccinated. We are all experiencing the strain of staffing shortages in our offices, surgery centers, and hospitals. This is only compounded by the vast consumption of hospital resources by seriously ill COVID cases. We are now seeing hospital operating rooms closing their doors to elective cases a month at a time. But there is a hope. The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine received full approval by the FDA. The Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines have similar effectiveness and safety data and may receive approval shortly as well. Hopefully this FDA approval will result in boosting the public’s confidence in the vaccine. We are one step closer to changing the direction of this pandemic.
