Immediate Source of Acquisition The Vallejo family papers were gathered together over many years by Bancroft Library staff from a range of sources including the Robert E. Cowan Collection, the T.W. Norris Collection (purchased from the Estate of T.W. Norris in 1954), the Emparan family (purchased in 1950), and Platon Vallejo's daughter, Francisca Vallejo McGettigan (gift to the Bancroft Library in 1956). The collection also includes a few photocopies from original materials in other repositories. Processing Information Collection arrangement dates to the 1950s. Biographical / Historical Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, the eighth of thirteen children, was born in 1808 in the then capital of , Monterey. At the age of fifteen, Vallejo became a cadet in the and would later serve as head of the garrison and military commander of the northern part of Alta California. As a reward for his service and to encourage his leadership, Vallejo was granted 66,000 acres near Petaluma, on which he operated a large cattle ranch from 1836 to 1846. In 1835, Vallejo founded the pueblo of Sonoma. After the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo, Vallejo was forced into lengthy battles to claim his lands. When he died in 1890, Vallejo was leading a fairly modest life on his remaining 200-acre piece of land in Sonoma he called Lachryma Montis. Among Vallejo's siblings were: Jose Manuel Salvador Vallejo (1813-1876), Captain of the Militia in Sonoma and grantee of Rancho Napa, Salvador's Ranch, and (with another brother) Rancho Lupyomi; Encarnacion Vallejo (1809-1902), wife of John

Leese, grantee of Rancho Huichica and other properties; Jose de Jesus Vallejo (1798-1882), grantee of Rancho Arroyo de la Alameda; and Maria Isadora Vallejo (1792-1830), wife of Mariano de Jesus Soberanes. In 1832, Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo married Francisca Maria Felipa Benicia Carrillo. The couple had sixteen children, ten of whom survived into adulthood. Among the Vallejo children were Epifania de Guadalupe Vallejo (1835-1905), wife of John B. Frisbie; Adelayda Vallejo (1837-1895), wife of Levi Cornell Frisbie; Natalia Veneranda Vallejo (1838-1895), wife of Attila Haraszthy; Dr Platon Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo (1841-1925), husband of Lily Wiley; Jovita Francisca Vallejo (1844-1878), wife of Arpad Haraszthy; Uladislao Vallejo (1945-unknown); Napoleon Primo Vallejo (1850-1923), husband of Martha Brown; Luisa Eugenia Vallejo (1856-1943), wife of Ricardo de Emparan; and Maria Ignacia Vallejo (1857-1932, wife of James Harry Cutter. Content Description The collection consists of four series: 1. the papers of Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo; 2. the papers of Platon Vallejo; 3. the papers of the Emparan family; and 4. clippings and scrapbooks. The papers of Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo consist of outgoing and incoming correspondence with family members and others. Much of this correspondence is personal in nature, but this series does include some correspondence relating to Vallejo's official duties and his historical legacy. Also in this series are materials relating to Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo's land interests, legal matters, and financial dealings. The series of Platon Vallejo's papers consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence as well as other family papers, some of which relate to his father's legacy. The Emparan family papers consist of correspondence of Luisa Vallejo Emparan and Ricardo de Emparan as well as some correspondence and other materials relating to Jose de Emparan de Torre. The clippings and scrapbook series consists of loose news clippings and scrapbooks of news clippings.
