A sign at the church lychgate states “Founded 411” and this year we are celebrating 1600 years of a place of worship at this place. Our celebrations will begin in earnest on Sunday May 1st , when Bishop Roy will be pre- siding at our Parish Eucharist. A baptism is also planned for that day. The following Saturday, May 7 th , we have a 1600 lunch at Penmere Manor Hotel, along the lines of previous Candlemas lunches. More details next month for this. The weekend of June 3 rd , 4 th and 5th we have Midsummer Music, with a concert by the Nankersey Male Voice Choir on the Friday, an Opera Night on the Saturday, and a special evensong on the Sunday. On July 8 th , 9 th and 10 th we have a flower festival in the Church with the theme of “Celtic Corn- Judy Menage—Churchwarden wall”. The following Saturday, 15 th July, our holy well in the churchyard will be “dressed”, with the help of the children of Mylor School – we hope to have an exhibition of their pictures in the church that weekend. Our Patronal Festival, normally held on the last Sunday of August, will be put back a week, in order that Bishop Tim can preside at our service; we plan a Patronal Evensong the previous Sunday, 28 th August. Celebratory postcards with two views of our lovely church are already on sale there, at 50p each. We have a picture at the North Door depicting St.Mylor and an explanation of our celebrations. Recipes from many Mylor folk are in- cluded in our 1600 recipe book, which will go on sale around Easter, and from June to August tickets will be on sale for our special 1600 Draw – more details nearer the time. We plan to have a leaflet guiding people to all the interest- ing gravestones in the churchyard. The above, taken in conjunction with the programme for the Friends of St. Mylor, means that this will be a particularly busy and interesting summer. 4 Judy Menage Chapel Chit-Chit -Chat--Chat The weather may or may not be Spring- like, but the evenings are much lighter and there’s a feeling of hope and expectancy in February. Flowers, predominately yellow in colour, lift our hearts, whereas the green of the grass has been noticeable all Winter. At Christmas we sang ‘Once in Royal David’s City’. On Good Friday, ‘There is a green hill far away’ will probably be chosen. These, along with ‘All things bright and beautiful’, are included in ‘Hymns for little children’, written by C. Frances Alexander. Frances was the wife of the Bishop of Derry and her hymns were written to help the children understand Bible stories. On shopping trips to Derry she would be reminded of Calvary by a small green hill outside the city walls and so used this to illustrate the meaning of the crucifixion. It is interesting to know what inspired hymn writers who were not necessarily poets. Conversion, illness, sense of loss, other difficult circumstances, often prompted our most sensitive and meaningful hymns. A thunderstorm, a becalmed boat, and folk songs, prompted others. In 1785, the Countess of Huntingdon asked William Williams, the ‘Sweet Singer’, to sing and play at the opening of the Christian Ministers College she had founded. William sang and played his own composition, ‘Guide me, O thou great Jehovah’. PS: There will be a Coffee Morning for Chapel Funds in the Parish Hall on Saturday, 19 th February, 10:00 am until midday.

Despite it being the traditionally ‘quieter’ period of the year in the gig rowing world, Flushing & Mylor Pilot Gig Club had a busy few months of technical training for its racing crews leading up to Christmas. Some early starts, com- bined with some unusually cold conditions, really demonstrated the commit- ment that the club’s best rowers have to their club and sport. Under the guidance of Penny Chuter OBE (Mylor resident and member of FMPGC), all those hoping to race in the 2011 season, including the World Championships in Scilly at the start of May, spent 6 weekends honing their basic rowing skills to help them when they get into the training proper which has now started in January. You may have spotted all three of the club’s gigs out alongside each other early on a Sunday morning. Now that the new year has started, more training carries on and the process of selecting the best rowers to represent the club on the Isles of Scilly contin- ues. The club is fortunate enough to have many more rowers to choose from than places available. So competition is fierce! One crew that the club always accept will represent them in Scilly is, how- ever, the famous Supervets Crew. With an average age of over 70, this will be their 5 th consecutive year of racing at the World Championships. Angus Nicholson, their oldest crew member will be 87 this year and can already be seen out on Wednesday and Saturday mornings in training. In fact, he hasn’t really stopped since the last time he went to Scilly as he is also a regular rower with some of the other crews who train in the daytime. The club is looking forward to another busy year of racing, along with the usual variety of social events which are laid on throughout the year season. If you are looking to try out gig rowing, a chance for newcomers to have a go will re-start on weekends from the middle of February. See our web- site www.fmpgc.org or contact Kim Dodge on 07815 759395. Watch this space for exciting news about our Junior Rowing section next month! Celia Fraser After over 50 years of successful Regattas the present committee has regret- fully decided to disband Mylor Village Regatta after failing to recruit new members. The Sailing Cups have been divided between Restronguet Sailing Club and Mylor Yacht Club and the rowing cups between Mylor, Flushing and Nankersey Gig Clubs. The money that remained in the bank, £350, has been handed to the Playing Field Refurbishment Project. If at some stage anyone would be willing to revive the Village Regatta, all the cups would be returned to the new committee. Tony Andrew The Friends of St. Mylor held their January Coffee Morning on Saturday 22 nd. The weather was kind, being crisp and sunny, and the hall was full to overflowing. The next event on our calendar is the Parish Lunch; this will again be held in Mylor Junior School. Tickets are £6.00 and there will be a limited seating ca- pacity. Details of how to obtain tickets are published on the Notice in the Magazine or on posters displayed around the village. The Friends’ AGM will be held on Monday 7 th March in All Saints Church at 7.30 p.m. Pamela Cartwright, Chairman Community News and Views ~ contd. Mylor Movies presents RED (12A ~ 110 mins Action Thriller) now to be shown on Wednesday, 23rd. Febru- ary. This is an irresistable plot; Helen Mirren, Bruce Willis, Morgan Free- man and John Malkovich as four "retired, very dangerous" (hence the title) CIA agents who get together for one last bout of explosions, chases and assorted fun. Absurd, but fast moving and absorbing. After all we have seen of Dame Helen Mirren in so many classic roles, to find her behind a machine gun is a joy to see. Doors open at 6.45. Cost is £4.50 Bring your own bottle of wine with you. Alastair Adams Mylor Gardening Club is now in its 24th year but this will be its last unless we can find a new Secretary, or a couple of friends working together, to put together a programme of speakers for next year. Mylor Playing Fields. As many of you will be aware we have been successful in our application for a grant from Community Spaces (Big Lottery) for the upgrading of the children’s play area. They have awarded us the maximum amount, £49,999, to deliver a project which involves replacing the worn-out play equipment, fencing the play area and landscaping to provide an imagina- tive, natural play environment. We are currently surveying the site and hav- ing detailed drawings prepared to enable us to go out to tender. We are hopeful that the new playground will be ready for its official opening at this year’s May Fair. Although this money is a huge boost enabling us to get started on the refur- bishment of the playing field, we will still actively seek funds for further im- provements, especially the provision of equipment for the teenagers. This represents a lot of hard work for the committee and other volunteers so please support our efforts where you can to help provide a first-class facility freely available to the whole community. A brief history of MYLOR BRIDGE BOWLING CLUB Although a young bowling club when compared to others in this part of Corn- wall its origination was far from straight forward. Tony Andrew and Rodney Prout were 'resting' in the Lemon Arms when their conversation turned again to their desire to form a bowling club in the village. A public meeting was called and a bowling club was created on 7th July 1964. A site was now needed for a green. The newly appointed Club President, William Pike, offered one of his flower fields on Passage Hill. Initially, this offer was re- jected in favour of the village playing fields but stringent conditions on that site encouraged acceptance of the flower field despite being on the side of a hill. Town and Country Planning Authority refused permission as the site was allo- cated for future housing. Mr Pike appealed and it was upheld. A portable build- ing was purchased and placed on the site and the club 'ground' was officially opened on the 7th April 1969. Just the small matter of a bowling green was re- quired to complete the arrangement. Interest-free loans were requested from the members to meet the cost of level- ling the ground at the estimated cost of £l.937.79 pence. In 1972 the members were given permission to remove the turf from the bowling green belonging to Falmouth Docks providing they undertook to meet the cost of lifting and trans- portation. Approximately 5,500 turfs were handled on the day. It was only then that the realisation dawned that a six feet wide strip around the whole green would still be bare earth. A desperate phone call to the Docks Manager who in turn phoned the Managing Director resulted in permission to the additional removal of the Docks tennis court. Problem solved - almost. The hired haulage lorry was on its way back to its Devon base. Another desperate phone call - this time to the police - who appre- hended the lorry at the Tamar Bridge and turned it back. The Mylor Bridge green was officially opened by Harvey Bell, then President of the CCBA, on the 27th May 1974.

18 News from the Boatyard

We know the launching season is fast ap- proaching as the tins of antifouling start emerging from the sheds. With around a 100 boats in our yard this winter, we have been very busy working on a variety of jobs ranging from major refits to simple but essential paint work as you can see from examples below.

De Hoop: This early Dutch 20 metre sailing barge is in for a complete back to bare steel refit. This includes new machinery, new windows, new paint and new interior and exterior. Shoo Shoo: This 20 metre Jongert is being repainted with Awlgrip, recaulking the decks, full machinery overhaul, new engine and other general mainte- nance and servicing. Norwegian Blue : Famous for traversing the Northwest Passage along with countless thousands of cruising miles, she is a custom built 40 foot steel yacht in for shot-blasting, painting and winter servicing. Uska Dara: 45 foot cold molded gentleman’s motor yacht built by Pendennis returns to us again for painting and servicing. Pinuccia: A beautiful and locally well-loved carvel built classic 8 metre yacht from Hotel Tresanton returns to us again, for painting and winter mainte- nance.

If you are interested in seeing the range of motor yachts available from Cock- wells, now is a great time to visit. As well as the first Duchy 27 under con- struction (mentioned in last months magazine) we also have our Cockwells 32 and 37 on site this winter, both great examples of what we can achieve. It is now three years since the restoration of the Tremayne Hall was com- pleted and reopened by Lady Mary Holborow on 7 October 2007. Since then a dedicated team of volunteers has worked to create the successful community centre that it is today, returning it to the busy place it used to be. After a shaky start we got some regular classes going and, as word went around, the hall began to be used for parties, receptions, concerts and events of all kinds. Our aim has always been to offer ‘something for everyone’ and we do endeav- our to fulfil this ideal. Our philosophy is to provide activities that benefit mind, body and social life. Please look at the website for details www.tremaynehall.org

The Lunch Club has been a great hit with the over 60s and every Tuesday one of eight teams serves soup and dessert to about 40 people. The social aspect is important, especially as many elderly people are living alone.

The archive centre (which is an integral part of the Tremayne Hall), was crucial to acquiring the HLF grant in 2005 and it is open on Thursday af- ternoons throughout most of the year when visi- tors are welcome. It really needs an article of its own to do justice to its role in the community.

There are art classes, a book group, bingo, a video club, computer drop-in sessions, various workshops, and excellent new films which are shown on the big screen. A team of volunteers from the committee run a regular season of films with high quality sound and vision. It is pleasant to be able to walk the short distance and meet up with friends for a chat and a glass of wine before the film starts.

Yoga caters for a regular group on Mondays and Thursday is the day for Keep Fit and Pilates classes. The number of participants is on the increase as we all try to take heed of those messages on healthy living with which we are so fa- miliar.

Dancing is a popular activity and this has much to do with TV programmes! The lovely floor of the hall is a great attraction for all types of dancing and seems to be able to take an enormous amount of pounding. Nevertheless it will need some TLC before long!

We have plans for new activities and are always pleased to hear your ideas and welcome offers of help. As the current financial situation bites, thankfully we can still afford to enjoy the company of others with similar interests and to make the most of our community centre at the heart of Mylor. 23 More About ~ Sarita Perkins, MBE

Born a Cornish Girl in the west of the County, Sarita told me that she grew up in the happiest of homes at Trereife (“Treeve”) where her father grew daffo- dils and kept a fine herd of Guernseys. The four Le Grice children had the run of an enormous house, where there were no rules except that one “should al- ways behave kindly and help with the daffs”. She describes her parents, Charles and Wilmay Le Grice , as being “exceptional in every way” and throughout her childhood at Trereife , she says that never once did she hear a cross or unkind word. It was natural that in this environ- ment, Sarita would develop a love of animals, especially the horses which have always played so big a part in her life. Whether at Trereife or at Downe House school in Berkshire, Sarita found time to hone her skills as a horsewoman and, upon her re- turn to Cornwall, she was a familiar figure at local events and hunts and played a significant role in the Pony Club and the Four Burrow hunt. Soon she was passing on her skills to oth- Trereife ers and in 1968 she went to Chiver- ton Cross as a helper for disabled riders.

Saritas’s commitment to RDA (Riding for the Disabled) was obvious to all, and by the mid seventies, she was County Instructor – a post which she held for ten years – and finally became chairman of Chiverton RDA some eight years ago.

Despite her busy schedule, Sarita has always enjoyed social events whether it be family reunions at Porloe Farm, serving soup at the Mylor lunch club (see photo p 21) or the more formal gatherings in the County. At one such gather- ing in 1961 (Bruce Holt’s 21st birthday bash at Devoran), Sarita met Christo- pher Perkins, a keen yachtsman. Soon boats, marriage, a farm and three chil- dren (Emma, Simon and Andrew) were added to her already busy life, but Sarita only took a brief respite when her husband became High Sheriff of Cornwall. Now she wonders how she fitted it all in, but the sense of ordered calm and purpose so evident at Porloe, are a clear indication of a life that is both structured and creative.

Recently, Sarita has determined to devote more time to her family and has relinquished some of her official positions. However she still enjoys her horses (her eventer, Simon Porloe, has been long-listed for the 2012 Olympics) and sailing the family Bowman 40 Cupid whenever she can get away from the farm. Above all, she continues to play a significant role in Mylor village life: hosting fund-raising events at Porloe, playing a leading role in the Tuesday lunch club and as vice-chairman of the governors ov Mylor School.
