The Episcopal Church of the Nativity The Window Volume 25, Issue 6 June 2018 From the Rector Another year of program at Nativity has come and gone. Though we have had to endure some changes, I could not be more proud of the way the congregation has responded. When Virginia resigned her position in September, we did not know how the children’s ministry would proceed. But members from this congregation, parents of the chil- dren, and others stepped in to not only fill that void, but to give rise to a program that thrived through the course of the year. The lay volunteers who have given so richly of their time, talent, and treasure transformed what could have been a year of decline into a year of growth and joy. I am deeply grateful to all those who have been and will continue to be a part of this ministry. Likewise, the youth ministry has shifted as well. The vol- unteers who have stepped in to support that program have maintained the momentum and even welcomed new young people into our midst. Morning Prayer, Cursillo reunion groups, Glory Days, the Tuesday Men’s Breakfast and our mid-week programs have continued to thrive in spite of our challenges. There are so many wonderful opportunities at Nativity. This is the work of the church: gathering to be fed by worship and to explore God’s call in scrip- ture, in community, in service to others. It is to this work that we now will welcome the Rever- end Mother Alice Sawyer (see Page 4 for more about Alice). Alice will share in the priestly min- istry of this congregation, visiting the sick, leading worship, and all that her call entails, but her other focus here will be on discipleship and evangelism. She is excited to be a part of this place and I am thrilled to welcome her to the staff. We also welcome Mrs. Caroline Stinson to the staff as our coordinator for Children’s and Youth ministry. Caroline has been a member of this congregation for several years now and has been very much a part of our formation efforts. Both Alice and Caroline will be spending the summer meeting with members of the congregation, determining needs and helping your rector and ves- try set a vision for our future together. Please join me in welcoming both of them to our leader- ship team here at Nativity. On a personal note, as I prepare for my summer studies for the Advanced Degree Program at Sewanee, I find myself reflecting on how much this time away to study informs my ministry here at Nativity. The opportunity to return to the mountain each summer has been a great blessing, even though it has also come with its share of challenges. This summer will be particularly challeng- See RECTOR, Page 4 June 3 June 10 June 17

A Celebration of American Music On Sunday, May 6, the Nativity Choir, joined by the Concert Choir of En- terprise State Community College, and musicians from Tallahassee, pre- sented a celebration of jazz, spirituals, modern American classical mu- sic, ragtime, gospel, Sa- cred Harp and Broadway that includes some of the most beautiful music ever written. The concert highlighted some of America’s most influential musical artists including Alabama’s own William Dawson, Robert Shaw/Alice Parker, John Williams, Aaron Copland and George Gershwin. You’ll hear current and classic melodies from Broadway by the choir and soloists. The concert concluded with a finale of “When the Saints Go Marching In.” We invite you to join us, and invite your family and friends to hear this celebration of American Music, accompanied by a string orchestra and per- cussion. Follwing the succesful concert, a Nativity hosted a reception in the Parish Hall. Selma Street School update

Dear Parents of Prospective Agents, We are excited for your child/children to join us at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity’s Vacation Bible School 2018. They will enter the “Agents of Christ” Academy where we will investigate the Bible to illuminate Jesus in our lives. We have planned a fun three days, and have some information to remember before we begin.

For pick up, children will only be dismissed to parents or person(s) on the alternate pick up persons listed on the registration form (see next page). • Rules and Safety We want to keep your children safe while having fun at the Academy! Please review this “Agent Conduct Covenant” with your agents in training before they come. 1. I will respect the adult VBS leaders and follow their instructions. 2. I will be kind to my fellow agents and will not tease or engage in behavior that might be seen as judging or making fun of a fellow agent. 3. I will not roughhouse, tickle or fight with other agents or VBS leaders. 4. I will not wander off and will stay with my group while at the Academy. 5. I understand that if I break these covenants during an activity, I will be given one warning. I also understand that if I continue to violate these covenants, I will be taken to the Parish Nursery for the remainder of that activity and will rejoin my group on the next activity. • Incidents and Emergencies If a parent cannot be reached, the VBS directors will call the registration from emergency contact to report an incident due to improper behavior and/or accident. We will also have a First Aid volunteer and nurse on site who, along with the group leader, will be informed of any child with allergy, disability or special circumstances as indicated on the registration form. • Food Agents in Training will have a snack each day so remember to fill out any allergy information on the registration form.
