Miller Principal Investigator Submitted to Virginia Department of Transportation 1221 East Broad Street Richmond, VA 23219 (804) 786-4305 Project 00236·100·107, CS01 March 1989 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ABSTRACT Between December 1987 and April 1988 personnel from the James Madison University Archeological Research Center (JMUARC) conducted a Phase II cultural resource evaluation along the 1100 through 1900 blocks of Duke Street (Route 236) in Alexandria, Virginia. The proposed widening of Duke Street is designed to eliminate the traffic bottleneck along the existing roadway. The project right-of-way, along the south side of Duke Streec, varies in width from 3 to 60 ft. This report will not discuss the 1500 and 1600 blocks. The 1500 block was originally bisected by a section of Hooff Run, a small feeder creek which drains into Hunting Creek and the Potomac River. The 1400 and 1600 blocks are coterminous with the creek, and the 1500 block never developed into a separate street address. The 1600 block has already been widened and required no additional archeological investigation. The Phase II investigation combined an extensive historic document search and an archeological investigation of portions of the 1100-1400 and 1700 blocks along Duke Street where archeological sites were likely to occur. The 1100 block was tested after archival research indicated the location of a Civil War period railroad complex in that block. -

SPOONER. the early Dutch colonial families the Van OF Rensselaers were the first to acquire a great landed estate in America under the "patroon" system; they were among the first, after the English conquest of New Netherland, to have their possessions erected into a "manor," antedating the Livingstons and Van Cortlandts in this particular; and they were the last to relinquish their ancient prescriptive rights and to part with their hereditary demesnes under the altered social and political conditions of modem times. So far as an aristocracy, in the strict understanding of the term, may be said to have existed under American institu- tions—and it is an undoubted historical fact that a quite formal aristocratic society obtained throughout the colonial period and for some time subsequently, especially in New York, — the Van Rensselaers represented alike its highest attained privileges, its most elevated organization, and its most dignified expression. They were, in the first place, nobles in the old country, which cannot be said of any of the other manorial families of New York, although several of these claimed gentle descent. -

Ceramics at the First Baptist Church of America Chelsea Sokolow The First Baptist Church of America 75 North Main Street Providence, RI 02903 (401) 454-3418 The study of Ceramics is a valuable resource in historical archaeology. The examination of ceramic pieces can aid in dating a site, reveal information about trade and production, as well as provide insight into the social practices surrounding an archaeological site. The variations in style and material composition are linked the geographic origin, the production methods of ceramic artifacts, and are indicators of class status in a community. When a ceramic assemblage is created the first step is to identify the artifacts. The three main attributes from which ceramic pieces are identified consist of the paste, surface treatment, and decoration (in that order). The paste is the type of the clay from which the pieces is made. The surface treatment examines the manner in which the vessel has been covered or glazed. The decoration consists of the methods, motifs, designs, and colors used to decorate the piece. (FLMNH) In general, the quality of the ceramic is directly connected to the composition of the clay and the temperature at which it has been fired. As the availability of high-heat kilns and advanced technology grew during the 18th and 19th centuries, the presence of higher quality ceramics also increased. The higher the temperature at which a piece is fired the less porous it becomes, making it more functionally useful. Discovered at the First Baptist Church of America were various types of ceramics pieces including coarse earthenware, refined earthenware, stoneware, ironstone, and porcelain pieces. -

The study was limited to kiln construction and its operation, and to ware production which characterized the simple, direct quality inherent in salt glazing. Background material was obtained from three, major sources: library collections of Kansas State University and the University of Kansas, personal correspondence with potters who have worked with salt glazing, and personal experience. The salt-glazing process is an inexpensive means of obtaining a hard, but handsome, glaze for stoneware. The salt-glazing industry flourished in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, and produced items such as ceramic utensils, beer mugs, and storage Jars. The industry was active in America during the colonial period. Today, however, salt glazing, on a large scale, is confined to industrial materials.
