At least 120 people jump into the water at Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven on 1/1/19 for the annual Polar Plunge. Hundreds more line the shore to watch the show. This year weather gods were much more favorable for the plungers than last year, which had to be postponed because of how cold it was. The first day of 2019 greeted plungers with temperatures of 55° in the air, and 43° in the water. See page 12 for more photos. Photo by Glenn C. Silva. First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Judge Murray Gurfein, Pentagon Papers case, June 17, 1971: “The security of the Nation is not at the ramparts alone. Security also lies in the value of our free institutions. A cantankerous press, an obstinate press, a ubiquitous press must be suffered by those in authority in order to preserve the even greater values of freedom of expression and the right of the people to know.” From Fairhaven Neighborhood News The Editor Volume 14, Issue 1 WEST ISLAND — Thursday, January 3, 2019 A day late and many dollars short. Officers and members of the community donated toys that were given to local children for Christmas. Fairhaven police officers also participated in “Shop with a Cop,” taking 16 chlidren on a shopping spree at WalMart. Officers donated money out of pocket, the union doated $25 for each child, and WalMart gave each child a $25 gift card toward the shopping spree. Fairhaven Police Chief Michael Myers said it was heartwarming to see how many children opted to use their shopping spree to buy gifts for siblings, and not only for themselves. Submitted photos.
