his may come as a surprise to some, but a massive twelve which is now extinct. Additionally, it is the foundation blood of of our fourteen home breeds are on the watch list. That’s other horses such as the Trakehner and Clydesdale. Initially bred 85%. Along with modern day living, technology, the rise in in the Cleveland Hills, along the North West edge of the Yorkshire Tpopularity of Irish horses during the 90’s and more lately Moors, they were used as pack horses (carrying or pulling stone, European horse breeds, sadly our home-growns are no longer as wool or coal), farm workers and for general riding – they carried interesting as they once were. their riders over amazing distances. They were versatile and stocky. Later, in the 19th century, the breed was changed through careful Data from the Rare Breeds Survival Trust inform us that Dales, selection in order to meet demands for taller and faster animals Eriskays, Hackneys, Suffolks and Cleveland Bays are actually and ones that could pull fashionable carriages. They were a strong ‘critical’ (which means less than 300); and Exmoors and Dartmoors commodity – the proceeds of sale of a Cleveland Bay foal would are ‘endangered’ (which means less than 500). cover your farm rent for a year. More recently, and with the dawn SO WHAT ARE WE DOING TO SAVE OUR BREEDS? of industrial machinery, the breed began its decline in popularity. There are a few schemes set up to help with numbers (the Exmoor But today, they are still as strong and adaptable as ever, and have Pony Project and the Fell Pony Heritage Centre, for example), been widely crossed with Thoroughbreds to produce fantastic coach but someone that is passionate about the Cleveland Bay and horses and quality working hunters. this and other breeds but other endangered livestock too. The Single Population Animal Records Keeping System is a computer database. It works by using a genetic analysis programme which assists breeders in sustaining and growing their small groups of endangered breeds. This successful breed management scheme has run for 14 years and in that time has been a champion in stemming the loss of genetic diversity within the Cleveland Bay population. At Thorpeley Stud, McKim also supports other rare breeds and operates several projects in order to help the decline of our horses. The stallions who stand at the stud include two Cleveland Bays, a Suffolk and three Irish Draughts. They work with nearby Sacrewell Farm, who have three Cleveland Bays and ive Suffolk mares. “We only breed pure bred Suffolk to Suffolk and Cleveland Bay to Cleveland Bay” McKim says. “The Sacrewell Farm/Thorpeley project is unique as we are doing it on a bigger scale than other projects, and in conjunction with each other, for the sake of both “The Sacrewell breeds”. Farm/Thorpeley It has been pointed out that it could be pointless to breed without buyers if there is little interest, and so project is unique as promoting the beneits has to be planned along with we are doing it on advocating and re-populating. “Making them popular is a case of continuing to show a bigger scale than that both breeds can be hugely versatile. We’d like to breed stock to ill the market, but sake of both breeds” sadly with numbers at a low as they are, it’s a “chicken and egg” situation. Regardless of this, we need the numbers of both breed to increase.” McKim also explains the medical side of things. Tower Equine Veterinary Hospital has a very important role as rare breed reproduction experts. They have worked with Thorpeley for many years, assessing the mares, working out their cycles and monitoring ovulations. “This procedure increases the mare’s chances of conception, instead of just putting the Stallion in the ield with her and hoping for the best. I am a qualiied AI technician so I do all the semen collections and inseminations myself.” With wonderful projects such as this the future looks a little brighter for our British breeds. McKim plans to breed his own stock and then source another unrelated stallion to allow for gene diversity. This way the breed can thrive and we will hopefully see Cleveland Bays, and the others, come off the critically endangered list. McKim adds, “it’s all guns blazing to save them using quality mares and stallions to get the supply and increase the demand. They can do pretty much everything. I wouldn’t want them to become extinct because of lack of use and ignorance”.

WIN New Forage Guard® from Alltech WIN n this issue we have teamed up with Alltech to giveaway three tubs of their new supplement Forage Guard®. with IForage Guard® is a broad spectrum mycotoxin binder designed to help lessen the damaging effects of mycotoxins on performance and health. Mycotoxins are produced by certain moulds commonly found in grains, mixed feed, forages and bedding, and are generally referred to as being either ‘i eld’ (Fusarium and Endophyte toxins) or ‘storage’ (Penicillium and Aspergillius) origin. Forage Guard® works to bind the mycotoxins in the gut, therefore preventing their absorption from the gut into the horse, without removing key nutrients from the diet, as can be the case with alternative clay binders. It has been awarded eight patents worldwide that protect its novel composition and proprietary production; it has been awarded peer-reviewed research for its binding capacity with pasture toxins and is the only product with peer reviewed research in horses with Fusarium toxins. A 5kg tub of Forage Guard® retails at £39 and contains a 100 day supply.

For your chance to win a 5kg tub of Forage Guard® fi ll in the entry form on page 63. For further information please visit www.lifeforcehose.co.uk or telephone 01780 764512.
