ABSTRACT Eight species in two subfamilies of Anthicidae are known from the Virgin Islands: Neoeurygenius portoricensis Abdullah (Eurygeniinae); Anthicus antilleorum Werner, A. crinitus LaFerté-Sénectère, A. floralis (Linneaus), A. tobias Marseul, Vacusus vici- nus (LaFerté-Sénectère), Sapintus teapensis (Champion), and Acanthinus trifasciatus (Fabricius) (Anthicinae).In addition to a key to these species, each is diagnosed and il- lustrated, and the Virgin Islands distribution given. The biogeographical composition of the fauna is discussed. A key to the subfamilies and tribes of West Indian anthicids is provided. RESUMEN Existen ocho especies en tres subfamilias de Anthicidae en las Islas Vírgenes: Neoeurygenius portoricencis Abdullah (Eurygeniinae); Anthicus antilleorum Werner, A. crinitus LaFerté-Sénectère A. floralis (Linnaeus), A. tobias Marseul, Vacusus vici- nus (LaFerté-Sénectère), Sapintus teapensis (Champion), y Acanthinus trifasciatus (Fabricius) (Anthicinae). Además de las claves para la identificación de estas especies, cada una es diagnósticada e ilustrada. Se incluye la distribución de las especies en las Islas Vírgenes. Se discute la composición biogeográfica de la fauna. Se ofrece una clave para las subfamilias y tribus de los Anthicidae de las Antillas. The Virgin Islands are located at the eastern extreme of the Greater Antilles. The northern islands lie on the submerged Puerto Rican Bank, while St. Croix and its sat- ellite islands are separated by a deep trench from the northern islands (Heatwole & MacKenzie 1966). -

Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits. -

A species list, identification key, short diagnoses and illustrations of all taxa are given. Brief information on known ecological preferences of species is given. INTRODUCTION Anthicidae are a cosmopolitan family of small to medium-sized, fast-moving beetles of the superfamily Tenebrionoidea. Anthicidae are represented in the World fauna by approximately 100 genera, and about 3500 species (Chandler, 2010). Only a few species are known from the fossil record. The last revision of the British Anthicidae was published by F. D. Buck (1954) in the well-known series Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects. Since then, there have been numerous nomenclatural changes within Anthicidae, and some additional species (introduced) have been recorded from the UK, making Buck’s key out of date. During 2004 and 2005 a total of 3356 specimens of Anthicidae from the UK and Ireland were examined by the author, mainly from the collections of The Natural History Museum (London), Oxford University Museum of Natural History and National Museum of Ireland. Additional data for more than 2100 specimens were received from other British museums and private collections between 2005 and 2007. A new key and short diagnoses for the genera are presented, as well as data on habitats and general distribution of species. -

Gorkog 30, 21000 Novi Sad, Serbia and Montenegro Received: November 12, 2003 Accepted: December 12, 2003 SUMMARY Maturation feeding habits of tiny beetles (4-6 mm) on sunflower heads have been observed in comparative studies involving different sunflower varie- ties in industrial scale sunflower fields in 1994. When determining these bee- tles, it has been established that they belong to the species of the group (Coleoptera, Heteromera) to the family of Coleoptera, Anthicidae, and to the two genera Notoxus and Formicomus. Formicomus pedestris ROSSI., Notoxus brachycerus FALD., Notoxus appendicinus DESBR. were the most frequent species, as contrary to the bee- tle population observed in maize fields where the dominant species were Noto- xus brachycerus FALD. and Notoxus appendicinus DESBR. Formicomus pedestris ROSSI. had “only” the third place in terms of population density. Each of the three species starts its maturation feeding on sunflower heads at the end of July or at the beginning of August. At first, the beetles consume pollen and later on they hollow out the seeds. It happens that as many as 15-20 beetles are seen feeding on a single flower head. Based on literature data, mass appearance of the beetles of the Coleop- tera, (Anthiciadae) species is expected on cadavers of Meloe species (Meloe proscarabeus L., Meloe violaceus MRSH, Meloe variegatus DON.) and of Mel- oidae species (Coleoptera, Meloiade), for example Cerocoma schaefferi L., Lytta vesicatoria L. -

Z pohledu ochrany p írody se proto horské ekosystémy adí mezi jedno z nejcenn jších a nejohrožen jších prost edí v globálním m ítku. V rámci p edložené doktorské práce byly studovány vybrané potenciáln významné antropické vlivy na biodiverzitu horských bezlesí Hrubého Jeseníku prost ednictvím modelové bioindika ní skupiny brouk (Coleoptera). V prostoru primárního bezlesí arkto- alpinní tundry byl studován vliv sjezdových tratí a invazivní d eviny borovice kle e ( Pinus mugo ) na spole enstva brouk . Na území sekundárních bezlesí podhorských luk a pastvin byl hodnocen vliv zem dlského hospoda ení na brouky a další bezobratlé. Studium vlivu lyža ského areálu prokázalo, že p estože jsou sjezdové trat v alpínské zón zájmového území provozovány zp sobem šetrným k vegetaci, tak pr kazn m ní pvodní spole enstva epigeických brouk . -

Marschalek Under the supervision of Professor Daniel K. Young At the University of Wisconsin-Madison Meloids are commonly referred to as “blister beetles” due to the toxin (cantharidin) they possess which can cause blistering of human skin. Several meloid species have long histories of negatively impacting agriculture resulting from large foraging aggregations and negatively impacting livestock health. Even with these important and interesting aspects, little is known about these beetles in their natural habitats. There are recent faunistic surveys of selected insect taxa in Wisconsin but a formal investigation of Meloidae is lacking. The blister beetle fauna of several states has been published, but this survey represents the first in the Midwestern United States. This study provides a comprehensive list of all meloid species documented from Wisconsin, as well as taxonomic keys and summaries for each species (species pages) which includes taxonomy, description, and natural history. During this survey, 28 species in seven genera were documented in Wisconsin, with 10 species considered new state records.
