Time For Your However, an order isn’t necessarily the last word. Child support orders are often modifi ed. One common reason is when there is a substantial change in the circumstances of a child or a parent. Some examples are a serious illness or injury, or signifi cant fi nancial change. Another common reason for a modifi cation is if it would be in the best interests of the child. A third is simply because the child is older and more expensive to care for. The laws of the state that issued the original child support order usually control what circumstances justify changing the amount of child support. Child support obligations continue until the child is at least 18 and, in many cases, beyond, so long as the child is still in school. Moreover, unpaid support accumulates as a debt owed by the parent ordered to pay. NEXT This debt can follow the parent to the grave, taking his or her property at death to satisfy the obligation. The only sure way to eliminate a child support obligation is an adoption. When a child is adopted, the nat- ural parent steps aside and is replaced by someone else. The new parent has the obligation of child support starting on the date of the adoption. Any back support owed for the period before the adoption is still the responsibility of the natural parent, though many states allow the custodial parent to waive the obligation. Car? However, it is certainly the goal of the system that the parent paying support welcomes the obligation and is an active participant in the child’s development and life. As with all things, your experience may vary. Check out Legal assistance can help you with non-criminal legal matters.
