Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo - Tavira OVER Foto: Turismo do Algarve / Pedro Reis De kerk Igreja de Santa Maria is een gebouw uit de 13e eeuw, dat waarschijnlijk op de plaats van een oude moskee is gebouwd. Later is de kerk nog aangepast na de aardbeving van 1755. In de gevel vallen elementen op in gotische stijl: het portaal, versierd met kapittels, het spitsboogvenster en een klein rozetvenster. De klokkentoren stamt ook nog van het oorspronkelijke bouwwerk, hoewel er later decoratieve elementen aan zijn toegevoegd. Opvallend is de ligging van de torens, tegen het hoofdgebouw aan terwijl ze normaal gesproken aan het andere uiteinde staan. Binnen zijn er enkele artistieke kunstwerken. In de hoofdkapel liggen de tombes van de zeven ridders van de orde Ordem de Sant'Iago en van D. Paio Peres Correia, die de stad Tavira op de Moren hebben veroverd. In de kapel van het Allerheiligste (Capela do Santíssimo), moet u eens letten op de tegels uit de 18e eeuw die geschiedenistaferelen verbeelden. In de kapel Capela das Almas staat een retabel van houtsnijwerk uit de 18e eeuw, die als centraal element een haut-reliëf heeft van religieuze iconografie daterend uit de 17e eeuw. Tenslotte kan de bezoeker in de sacristie tegels bekijken uit de 18e eeuw, die beschilderd zijn met fruitmanden en boeketten. De heilige schat bestaat uit juwelen uit de 16e tot en met de 18e eeuw en paramenten. Bijzonder is ook de waardevolle standaard voor het missaal uit de 16e/17e eeuw afkomstig uit Japan. Then hills of fig and almond trees and houses with dazzling whitewashed walls and distinctive chimneys decorated to resemble the fine tracery of lace. And last of all, the great open spaces of the hills, where eagles soar, birds sing and flowers bloom. This is just a hint of the charms of Tavira and its municipality, an invitation to come and find out more. THE HISTORY OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF TAVIRA The existence of hill forts and megalithic monuments dates the human presence in Tavira municipality to the Neolithic period (4,000 to 1,500 B.C.). In the Chalcolithic and subsequent periods, this presence was associated with the mining operations that flourished in the northeast of the Algarve and with trading links with the Mediterranean. It was on the coast, however, that the largest settlement grew up after the Roman conquest (1st century B.C.), thanks to the economic importance of fishing and the fish-salting industry. The major town of Balsa, situated near to Tavira and connected by road to Ossonoba (Faro) and Baesuris (Castro Marim), dates from this period. Under Moorish rule (8th to 13th centuries), the strategic importance of Tavira’s castle and port made it one of the main towns in the Algarve. It was the Knights of the Order of Sant’Iago (St. James) who occupied Tavira in 1242, continuing the Christian reconquest that began with the taking of neighbouring Cacela.

A reconstrução neoclássica de Santa Maria de Tavira José Eduardo Horta Correia Universidade do Algarve A colina genética de Tavira, para além de outras hipotéticas situações urbanísticas ou arquitectónicas anteriores hoje ainda mal conhecidas, fora sem dúvida dominada na época muçulmana pela mesquita maior, espaço sagrado, referente simbólico e elemento ordenador da cidade islâmica. Dela restará porventura, como único elemento material, no todo ou em parte, o minarete, actual torre do relógio. Com esse dominante referente urbano a encontraram os cavaleiros de Santiago e assim a mantiveram através da tradicional refuncionalização dos espaços sagrados. A mes- quita maior fora transformada em Matriz de Santa Maria, sob a invocação da Assunção como as principais igrejas da reconquista, nascendo então a divisão paroquial da cidade cristã nas duas freguesias de Santa Maria e Santiago esta só explicável pela transforma- ção da mesquita menor. A imagem da cidade manteve pois o seu principal referente icónico em posiciona- mento urbanístico e em visualização volumétrica, enquanto guardaria, real ou miticamente, como penhor dessa refuncionalização, as ossadas de Dom Paio Peres Correia e dos sete cavaleiros conquistadores. Daqui terá nascido então a igreja gótica com cronologia ainda hoje controversa, de três naves, quatro tramos, cobertura de madeira a que correspondiam as três absides, duas das quais ainda existentes, tal como aliás a porta principal. E foi esta igreja gótica que recebeu durante os séculos XVI, XVII e XVIII as capelas adicionadas a norte, como o es- paço manuelino de abóbada artesoada da Capela dos Melos, revestida de azulejos seis- centistas, ou a Capela do Santíssimo de planta centralizada e cúpula hemisférica.

S & Marçal.M “When urban geology meets cultural tourism” WHEN URBAN GEOLOGY MEETS CULTURAL TOURISM Stefan Rosendahl1 Marta Marçal Gonçalves2 Abstract The region of Algarve (Southern Portugal) has a rich geological history, whose testimonies are the different rock types, their structures and the fossils. These can be found not only in the countryside, in quarrels or in the cliffs, but also in the towns, in the building-stones of monuments, other edifices or pavements. The state and the way of weathering of the stones informs about their exposition and durability. By observing the stones, they can tell us about their origin and age. Joining this history with the history of the buildings and their art, and knowing (or presuming) the local of the provenience of the building material, it is possible to get a more complete image of the whole context, including, for instance, the transport possibilities. If there are any “exotic” stones, that is to say stones whose origin was far from the visited site, we may take conclusions about trading connections in the country or even overseas. The inclusion of Urban Geology in the usual paths of cultural tourism will enrich the touristic offer of a town. It is aimed to people with historical and scientific interest and can be participated by persons with reduced mobility. The stones and eventually the fossils can be observed in the town during the whole year, at any weather, without the need of pollutant cross-country vehicles or long and exhausting walking-tours.

A walk around Tavira ABOUT Photo: Shutterstock - Evgeni Fabisuk A walk around Tavira Tavira is very seductive, and from the streets along the River Gilão to the castle walls from which you have the best view over the town, it makes you want to discover its hidden corners and unlock its secrets. There is a certain oriental charm in this town, in its “scissor” truss or hipped roofs which are outlined against the sky in a unique way and its latticed timber doors that shelter homes while still letting air and sound in, a heritage from the Arabs who inhabited the region. Tavira straddles both banks of the river in an intricate design of narrow streets and white houses that call for an unhurried stroll. The Jardim do Coreto (Bandstand Garden) is the liveliest area, where people wander around savouring an ice cream and the fresh air, especially at night when shows and other events bring additional life to the area. Here you will find the Mercado da Ribeira which, after its original function as a market finished, is now devoted to entertainment and leisure. The oldest bridge, which is believed to be originally Roman, is a 17th century structure with a walled parapet from which you can enjoy a beautiful view over the houses. An even better view is the one you will see by climbing the Castle Tower, arguably the best viewpoint over the town, taking in the undulating roofs, the domes of the churches, the river and the salt pans, right up to the blue line of the sea on the horizon.

Marian Shrine Route ABOUT Marian Shrine Route Venerated in various ways over time, the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, is a constant presence in Catholic religious expressions in Portugal. Visit some of the temples dedicated to her to discover the depths of this devotion. Fátima, where Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children in 1917, is undoubtedly the main place of worship in Portugal and one of the world’s principal shrines of Marian devotion. This place of faith and peace has received pilgrimages ever since, especially on the 13th of each month, and they reach their peak in May and October, when crowds express their faith in a way that touches everyone, believers or not. In Portugal, the worship of Our Lady dates back to the founding of the nation and gave rise to monasteries, chapels, churches and shrines that are the scene of celebration and popular feasts.
