ATHLETICISM DRILLS

1. Tag (Pee Wee) – this is a great and fun way for kids to learn the basics of cutting skills

2. Quick two-hand touch football or soccer game. This should not be more than a few minutes. Use this as a reward for good hustle or focus. When you play football, offense focus on cutting moves to get open. When you play soccer, offense team should focus on court spacing and passing. For both sports, defense should focus on proper footwork to not get beat. www.solancoyouthbasketball.org

3. 3 cone relays: Set up a line of 3 cones about 3 feet apart. 1. Defense slide to 1st cone and back; then to 2nd cone and back; then to 3rd cone and back. After touching baseline on 3rd cone; sprint to half court and back. 2. Same as above but run forward to cone, fast steps around it and then backpedal.

4. Standing two foot jump: 3 lines at each basket; one at time players stand under rim and do a two foot jump as high as they can. Should land balanced on both feet. Players do three consecutive jumps; then rotate.

5. Sleeping Sprint: 4 line spread out on baseline. First player in line lays flat on stomach, face looking at ground. Coach blows whistle. Players must push themselves up from ground and sprint to half court.

6. Cone hop (must use the small dome shape cones that sit about 2 inches off ground): Set up a line of cones from baseline under basket to the foul line. (set up three different lines if you have enough cones). Players form line on baseline. One at a time, they complete a two foot hop side to side, over the line of cones. Each hop is also in the direction of foul line. Should try to keep hop quick, explosive and just enough to clear the cones. This should be done as quickly as player is able to complete with proper technique.
