    VINCE GILL BIOGRAPHY “Vince Gill is quite simply a living prism refracting all that is good in country music. He uses the crystal planes of his songwriting, his playing, and his singing to give us a musical rainbow that embraces all men and spans all seasons.” - Kyle Young/Country Music Foundation on Vince’s induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame Vincent Grant Gill was born April 12, 1957 in Norman, Okla. His father encouraged him to learn to play guitar and banjo, which he did along with bass, mandolin, dobro and fiddle. While in high school, he performed in the bluegrass band Mountain Smoke, which built a strong local following and opened a concert for Pure Prairie League. After graduating high school in 1975, Gill moved to Louisville, Ky. to be part of the band Bluegrass Alliance. After a brief time in Ricky Skaggs’s Boone Creek band, Gill moved to Los Angeles and joined Sundance, a bluegrass group fronted by fiddler Byron Berline. In 1979, he joined Pure Prairie League as lead singer and recorded three albums with the band, the first of which yielded the Top Ten pop hit “Let Me Love You Tonight” in 1980. Departing the group in 1981, Gill joined Rodney Crowell’s backing band the Cherry Bombs, where he met and worked with Tony Brown and Emory Gordy Jr., both of whom would later produce many of his future solo albums. In 1983, Gill signed with RCA Records and moved with his wife Janis and daughter Jenny to Nashville to pursue his dream of being a Country Music artist.

    55 years of country-rock, 1965-present: Creating a new American musical genre--how two immensely popular genres of music merged to create a timeless style, uniquely American in every aspect. This class will cover the historically significant country-rock movement which started in LA in 1965 and spread across the country, changing the musical landscape of popular music. We will explore how two roots-oriented genres-- country music and rock and roll--borrowed from each other and merged to create a new genre which has since spawned many sub-genres, each with its own unique approach to country-rock. We will look at several artists and their key albums, including: The Byrds, the Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills and Nash, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, Poco, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Steve Earle and others, as well as trends in instruments, arrangements and lyric-writing that made up the songs. WHEREAS, it is fitting that this General Assembly should recognize those gifted artists who have experienced great success in the world of country music; and WHEREAS, Vince Gill, one of the most honored artists in the history of country music, will celebrate his thirtieth anniversary as a member of the Grand Ole Opry on August 10, 2021; and WHEREAS, a native of Norman, Oklahoma, Mr. Gill was a talented guitar and dobro player by the time he was in his teens; he began his career playing with various bluegrass bands before moving to Los Angeles, California, thereafter joining the pop-country-rock band Pure Prairie League; and WHEREAS, he had a stint in the Cherry Bombs with Rodney Crowell and work backing Rosanne Cash before settling in Nashville in 1984 and signing his first recording contract as a solo artist; and WHEREAS, Vince Gill's commercial breakthrough came in 1990, when "When I Call Your Name" reached No. 2 on the charts; for the next decade, he remained a steady presence in the Top 10, with such hits as "I Still Believe in You," "Tryin' to Get Over You," "Liza Jane," and "What Cowgirls Do"; and WHEREAS, Vince Gill made his Opry debut on July 29, 1989, and was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry on August 10, 1991; both a critical and commercial success, he has sold more than 22 million albums; and WHEREAS, his long list of accolades includes more Country Music Association awards than any other artist and the most Grammy awards of any male country artist; in 2007, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, becoming one of the youngest artists to earn such membership; and WHEREAS, in addition to his contributions through music, Mr.
