LOST IN THE BAYOU: LANGUAGE THEORY AND THE THANATOS SYNDROME by GILBERT CALEN VERBIST (Under the Direction of Hugh Ruppersburg) ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the role of Walker Percy‟s theories on language, derived from the writings of Charles Sanders Peirce, in The Thanatos Syndrome. The argument of this thesis is that the language use of individuals affected by heavy sodium poisoning can best be explained in the terms of Percy‟s language theories, even though those theories are not elaborated within the novel itself but in various non-fiction works by the author. One of the central tenets of Percy‟s theory on language is that human language is triadic whereas all other forms of communication (and, in fact, all other phenomena) are dyadic. Percy saw the tendency treat as dyadic the triadic behavior of language to be reductionist and dangerous, which is the commentary inherent in the language use of sodium-affected individuals in The Thanatos Syndrome. Doctor of Philosophy (English), December, 1985, 213 pp., bibliography, 298 titles. Walker Percy differs from other American novelists in that he started writing fiction relatively late in life, after being trained as a physician and after considerable reading and writing in philosophy. Although critics have appreciated Percy's skills as a writer, they have seen Percy above all as a novelist of ideas, and, accordingly, the ma- jority of critical articles and books about Percy has dealt with his themes, especially his philosophical themes, as well as with his philosophical sources. This study explores, therefore, the critical response to philosophical ideas in Percy's five novels to date, as evidenced first by reviews, then by the later articles and books. The critical response developed gradually as critics became aware of Percy's aims and pointed out his use of Christian existentialism and his attacks upon Car- tesianism, Stoicism, and modern secular gnosticism. These critical evaluations of Percy's philosophical concerns have sometimes overshadowed interest in his more purely artistic concerns. However, the more a reader understands the underlying philosophical concepts that inform Percy's novels, the more he may understand what Percy is trying to say and the more he may appreciate Percy's accomplishment in expressing his philosophical ideas so skillfully in fic- tional form. -

The Backdrop of Suicide Walker Percy (1916-1990) was born into an aristocratic, Southern family of Scottish descent. Though noble and successful, the family was haunted by melancholy.1 [1] Paul Elie writes, "There was a suicide in nearly every generation. One Percy man dosed himself with laudanum; another leaped into a creek with a sugar kettle tied around his neck. John Walker Percy -- Walker Percy's grandfather -- went up to the attic in 1917 and shot himself in the head." (Elie 10) Walker 's father, Leroy Pratt Percy, took his life in similar fashion just twelve years later. When Walker was only fifteen, and the family only two years removed from Leroy Pratt's death, his mother drove into a lake with his younger brother in the passenger seat. Most believe it was an accident, but Walker confessed privately that he thought it was intentional.2 [2] The impact of these suicides was not marginal; Percy explains, "The central mystery of my life is to figure out why my father committed suicide."3 [3] Though he never considered himself to be suicidal, he often referred to himself as an "ex-suicide."4 [4] 1 [1] For the definitive book on the Percy family see Bertram Wyatt-Brown's The House of Percy. 2 [2] For this account see Samway (1997 pp. 54-56). ANALYSIS The Moviegoer (1961) Walker Percy (1916-1990) "The Moviegoer is set in New Orleans; the narrator, Binx Bolling, manages a small branch office of his uncle's brokerage firm. The special quality of fantasy of the novel is the narrator's interest in motion pictures and their stars: 'It is their peculiar reality which astounds me.' He is considered a genius of some kind by his aunt, though he admits that 'actually I'm not very smart.' Through college and beyond, high hopes have been entertained of him; his aunt wants him to go to medical school. Unable to cope with the actual world, he frequently settles for the cinematic one; there are degrees of authenticity (for example, a movie like Panic in the Streets with Richard Widmark was filmed in New Orleans and thus reaches a kind of ultimate in authenticity). His behavior is modeled upon that of movie stars; toward his society, 'I keep a Gregory Peckish sort of distance.' Bolling's worst problem is to 'fit in'; the film world seems to give a greater sense of security and correctness than any other. Memories of films are more vivid than those of past experiences. Bolling has a special fondness for what he calls 'a repetition,' which he describes as 'the re-enactment of past experience toward the end of isolating the time segment which has lapsed in order that it, the lapsed time, can be savored of itself and without the usual adulterations of events that clog time like peanuts in brittle.' Thus a repetition is a 'clean' recurrence, free of extraneous mixtures and adhesions. -

WALKER PERCY AND THE MAGIC OF NAMING: THE SEMEIOTIC FABRIC OF LIFE by KAREY PERKINS Under the Direction of Thomas McHaney ABSTRACT Walker Percy thought a paradigm for the modern age, human beings, and life does not exist, and no paradigm vying for supremacy (religion, scientism, new age physics and philosophies) succeeds. He sought to create a “radical anthropology” to describe human beings and life. His anthropology has existential roots and culminates in the philosophy and semeiotic of American pragmatist Charles Sanders Peirce. Unlike any other creature, humans have symbolic capacity, first manifested in a child’s naming and demonstrated in human being’s unique language ability, the ability to communicate through symbol and not just sign. Percy conveyed his anthropology in his last three novels through a number symbolism corresponding to the theme of each novel based on Peirce’s Cenopythagoreanism, viewing the world through the paradigm of number.
