Viu announces new Korean Viu Original drama series River Where the Moon Rises The period romance stars acclaimed K-drama talent Kim So Hyun and Ji Soo PCCW (SEHK:0008) – HONG KONG / SINGAPORE, January 27, 2021 – Viu, a leading pan-regional OTT video streaming service operated by Viu International Limited, has revealed its latest Viu Original, a highly anticipated Korean period romance drama series titled River Where the Moon Rises. Set to premiere exclusively on Viu on February 15, 2021, River Where the Moon Rises is adapted from a Korean folktale recorded in The History of the Three Kingdoms and based on Princess Pyeonggang (Kim So Hyun) and her General, On Dal (Ji Soo). Born as a princess but raised as a soldier, young Pyeonggang sets out on a tour of the kingdom with her mother, the Empress, during which they arrive at a village where they meet General On Hyeop and his son, On Dal. Sharing with him her goal of becoming Goguryeo’s first queen with her intellect and confidence, the straightforward On Dal laughs at her lofty dreams as women do not engage in state affairs, though he means no harm. Meanwhile, the Empress is seeking help from General On Hyeop due to the schemes and conspiracies ongoing in the kingdom, but the two are assassinated in the process. Tilland University of Washington Abstract Hateful and Heartwarming Bonds: The Senses as Strategy in the South Korean Family Bonnie R. Tilland Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Ann Anagnost Department of Anthropology This dissertation investigates women’s strategizing around the senses in South Korea, tracing the ways that women move between sensory experience as an ideal and as an object to put into motion. I argue that the language of the sensory is invoked to stand up to state or societal pressures regarding family-making, child-rearing, and maternal subjectivity. The senses, affect, and emotions are employed to carve out space for individual and family well-being within neoliberal logics of productivity, but these new areas of sensory possibility are too often colonized by the same neoliberal logics. Utilizing multi-sited ethnography, media analysis, and an interdisciplinary feminist perspective, I followed the language of sensory development and sensory experience in practice through participant-observation at community spaces, and through ethnographic interviews. The main issues of this dissertation include: first, the ways that the extended family in South Korea is structured through visual culture and watching/being seen, resulting in ambivalence, particularly in the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship. Second, how touch and other senses are conceived of as avenues for emotional and psychological fortification for young children, and how this cultivation of sensory education is extended not just to the mother-child bond, but also to national healing. -

Universitas Airlangga Keywords: Political Economy of Business, Cultural Content Export, Cultural Policy, Marketing Strategy. Abstract: State-led development and synergy with chaebols have been the most prominent features of South Korean government since the dictatorship of Park Chung-Hee. Even after the new wave of democracy engulfed the country, this feature remained, albeit much less restrictive. These characteristics are also reflected in Korean cultural policy, which was also used as one of the main export engines since the 90s. Cultural content export, despite newly-established, has been tremendously profitable for both states and corporations in South Korea. It has consistently increased in export rate and sales in the last decade. However, in 2016, Chinese government announced ban for cultural content export from South Korea, making both government and corporations of South Korea were scrambling to look for a new market for its export. Hence, they started to enhance their export to Southeast Asian countries as the new lucrative market they can aim at. This paper aims to highlight the political-economy of Hallyu and underline the synergy between state’s cultural policy and corporations’ marketing strategy in Southeast Asian countries post-THAAD ban by China. In order to limit the research, it focuses on the expansion of Hallyu in Thailand and Indonesia post-THAAD ban. It employs a descriptive method to explain and validate the link between state policy and corporation’s marketing strategy. The findings show the correlation between THAAD ban and the increase of Hallyu expansion in Southeast Asia, as indicated by growing list of events in both Indonesia and Thailand.
