Special Exhibition Audio Tour: : Imitation of Life

Accompanying the exhibition is an engaging audio tour produced by The Broad. Featuring interviews with artists in the Broad collection, including Sharon Lockhart and Jordan Wolfson, and celebrities who have been influenced by Cindy Sherman’s work, including actresses Jamie Lee Curtis, Molly Ringwald, Miranda July and Gaby Hoffmann, director John Waters, and Humberto Leon, co-owner and creative director of Opening Ceremony and co-creative director of Kenzo, the audio tour helps visitors deepen their engagement with the exhibition. Visitors can access the tour by downloading The Broad’s free mobile app, accessible on Apple and Android smartphones or Wi-Fi–enabled portable electronic devices, in the app store.

The tour includes stops by:

Gaby Hoffman, an actress who currently stars in the critically-acclaimed show Transparent. Hoffman discusses Sherman’s seminal Untitled Film Stills, touching upon her close personal relationship with the artist as well as Sherman’s talent for acting.

Humberto Leon, the co-owner and creative director of Opening Ceremony as well as co-creative director of Kenzo. Leon discusses Sherman’s influence on fashion and the way Sherman uses her understanding of fashion to construct her portraits.

Sharon Lockhart, a photographer whose work is prominent in the Broad collection. Lockhart discusses Sherman’s influence on her decision to become an artist as well as the presence of humor, feminism and artifice in Sherman’s history portraits.

Miranda July, a filmmaker, artist and writer. July examines Sherman’s use of the grotesque, real feelings for unreal body parts, and what might be hiding inside of us.

Jordan Wolfson, an artist in the Broad collection known for his often provocative installations and sculptures. Wolfson discusses Sherman’s clown series in terms of classical portraiture.

John Waters, a film director, author, actor and photographer. Waters knows exactly the types of people Sherman is playing in her society portraits and is ready to share a few juicy details about their lives.

Molly Ringwald, an actress, writer and singer who stars in Sherman’s feature length film Office Killer (1997). Here she discusses Sherman’s directing style and what it was like working on a movie that “defies categorization.”

Jamie Lee Curtis, an actress and Times best-selling children’s book author. Curtis discusses Sherman’s most recent body of work touching upon Sherman’s “single frame performances,” Hollywood actresses past and present, and aging.
