PhysicsFrank teacher, Mr. Malkemes, took a group of juniors and seniors to Penn State Wilkes Barre on October 26 to explore the field of engineering. This event was de- signed for high school students that are serious about engineering and engineering technology careers. They were able to explore academic majors and career op- portunities from engineering faculty and industry repre- sentatives who hire Penn State graduates. Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the . In America today, 11.3 million children are alone and unsupervised after school. Afterschool programs keep kids safe, help working families and inspire learning. They provide opportunities to help young people devel- op into successful adults. Lights On Afterschool was launched in October 2000 with celebrations in 1,200 communities nation- wide. At Villanova, Curvey Scholars are also eligible to apply for the Curvey Fellowships. Cur- vey Fellowships provide students a unique opportunity to explore interests outside of the classroom. Curvey Fellows have studied marine biology in Australia, visit- ed animal sanctuaries and ancient temples in Sri Lanka, studied ancient civilizations in Greece and explored the cultures of South America. To date, forty-one students have benefited from this program and there are up to 16 Curvey Scholars on campus each year. The Scholars form an immediate connection at Villanova and quickly become a tight-knit group. Curvey Scholars serve as resources and friendly faces in a new environment for the freshmen each year.
