Ahab (a mean king) also made the (idol). So King Ahab did more to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him. 1 Kings 16:33

Elijah Predicts Drought ] Now Elijah the prophet said to Ahab, “As the LORD, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall certainly be neither dew nor rain during these years, except by my word.” 1 Kings 17:1 Because of the sins of the people and their king, for three years no rain fell in the land of Israel. The grass disappeared from the hills. The cattle grew lean. Nothing grew in the field and people had less and less to eat.

As King Ahab saw the land and cattle wasting away, he called for Elijah but no one could find him. Then God told Elijah to go see the king. The king cried angrily, ‘Are you the one who has been troubling Israel?’

Elijah answered, ‘I am not troubling Israel. You are! You have disobeyed the commandments of the Lord You have worshiped the false god .

The King listened as Elijah told him to gather all the people of Israel and all the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Ahab agreed.

From every corner of the kingdom people came to Mount Carmel wondering what was going to happen. Elijah wanted to let the people see that the Lord God had great power. God could be trusted.

‘How long will you waver between two opinions?’ Elijah asked. ‘If the Lord is God follow Him. If Baal is god then follow him.’

The people listened but would not reply Elijah proclaimed, ‘I am a lone prophet of the Lord but Baal has 450 prophets.

‘Let them prepare a sacrifice and I will do the same. We will not light the fire. They will call on Baal and I will call on the Lord and one who answers with fire, let Him be God.

The people agreed to the contest. They trusted in their god Baal. Elijah stood by as the prophets of Baal prepared their sacrifice and called on their god from morning until noon.

The prophets leaped and danced. ‘Oh Baal, hear us!’ But there was no answer from Baal.

At noon Elijah mocked the prophets. ‘Cry louder. Maybe Baal is talking or away on a journey. Maybe he’s asleep and needs to be woken.’ The prophets of Baal cried louder than ever, leaping around in a wild frenzy begging their god to answer. They even cut themselves with knives that Baal might take pity on them.

The people watched but Baal did not answer. Elijah then called the people near him as he prepared his sacrifice.

First Elijah took twelve stones and rebuilt a broken altar of the Lord where this nation had worshiped the true God long ago. He put the wood in place and laid the sacrifice on the altar.

Next he made a trench all around the altar of the Lord and made a strange request.

He told the people to fill 4 large jars with water. Not one time, not two times but three times water from the four pots were poured on the altar. 4+4+4=12 pots of water were pored on the altar. … and throw it all over the sacrifice until it was soaked and the trench was filled to the brim. Elijah knew the power of God was trustworthy. God would light the sacrifice.

The people watched as Elijah came to the altar and prayed, ‘Lord God of Israel, let it be known today that You are God and I am your servant who has done all these things at your command.

‘Hear me O Lord, so that these people will know you are the Lord God and turn back to you.’ Elijah knew God was to be trusted. He did not doubt the power of the one true God. Suddenly the fire of the Lord fell.

The altar, the sacrifice, the water, even the dust of the ground was burned up by the fire.

The people fell on their faces and exclaimed, ‘The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!’ The whole nation worshipped the Lord as the only living God. They learned what Elijah knew, that God can always be trusted. Application Activity:

Players: 3 or more players

Materials needed: 1. balloons, bottle tops, checkers, peanuts unshelled, or anything else that can be blown with a straw 2. Straw for each player 3. Table which can be divided into two equal spaces. 4. Divide table by tape, cord, or material scrap. Anything will do that will allow free movement of balloons or what ever you decide to play with.

Object of game: Get all or as many as you can of the balloons out of your space and into the other team’s side of the table in 30 seconds. Side with least number of balloons wins.

Team A has one player (Of course will not win) Team B has more than one player

Object lesson: Elijah was one person, the priests of Baal were 450 men strong. One person by themself is not enough to win the battle or trials of life. But one who trusts in God and obeys God like Elijah did can always trust in the one true God who is always with us. The One we can always trust to help us. Song One True God Sent in by Tari Osborn (Sing to the tune of London Bridge)

There is only one true God, one true God, one true God. There is only one true God. There’s no other! People prayed and called to Baal, called to Baal, called to Baal. People prayed and called to Baal. He did nothing! Elijah prayed and asked for fire, asked for fire, asked for fire. Elijah prayed and asked for fire. God sent fire! There is only one true God, one true God, one true God. There is only one true God. There’s no other!

Truly Elijah trusted in the Lord. Pouring water on something before you want it to burn, just shows the trust in God that Elijah had. He had no doubt in God’s power to go way beyond what we can even think or do.

We can surely trust in our one and only True God.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart.
