During the past year, the Board of Directors was mainly focused on Bill 10 and its impending passage.

The importance of maintaining the establishments’ heritage, culture, language rights, personalization as well as the link to the community pre-occupied the Board of Directors.

Bill 10, which was finally adopted by the Quebec government on February 9, 2015, completely restructures the Quebec health care system.

On Friday, March 6, Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg was officially appointed by the Minister as the President Director General of our CIUSSS. With the introduction of several amendments to the original bill, organizations such as Maimonides and Eldercare, which were built by the community, will retain their Corporations and the rights that go with it.

At the annual meeting of the Donald Berman Maimonides Geriatric Centre, Corporation, Foundation and Medical Research Foundation held on November 5, 2014, Stanley Hitzig was honoured with the Outstanding Service Award – the highest award given by the Centre.

At the annual meeting of Jewish Eldercare Centre held in October of 2014, Milan Bratin was honoured with the Outstanding Service Award for Jewish Eldercare Centre.

Once again, with the generous donation from our Foundations, we were able to provide bursaries for our staff members who are upgrading their education. For the year 2014-2015, $12,350 was allocated by the Foundation for staff bursaries (Maimonides) and $10,000 (Jewish Eldercare).

As usual, the number of students during the year was maintained and has now reached approximately 571 students (Maimonides) and 584 (Jewish Eldercare). We have maintained our partnerships and affiliations with McGill, Université de Montréal, many CEGEPs and adult-learning programs. Our McGill affiliation learning contract dates back at least 40 years and continues to grow stronger.

The Donald Berman Maimonides Centre for Research in Aging has continued to fulfil its strategic goals for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. Significant steps have been taken to further establish the Centre for Research in Aging as a leader in long-term care geriatric research and our achievements continue to position Maimonides as a cen- tre of excellence in long-term care. During the past year, there were 8 peer-reviewed publications and 18 pres- entations. There are currently 10 projects underway.

Even with the additional cuts this year, we ended the year with a balanced budget. As we go forward into the next fiscal year as part of the CIUSSS, we are hopeful that our ability to look at innovative solutions will help us move forward during these difficult times.

The redesign of the bathing rooms on units 3 and 4 on the Hope pavilion have won a prestigious award from Planetree International – an organization focused on resident-centred care. The Jewish Eldercare Centre Design Team won the 2015 Planetree award for the bathing room redesign. A special team designed the new bathing facilities with the needs of our residents in mind. As a result, our new bathing rooms include the following features that help improve the quality of the resident bathing experience: • A sky light with radiant heat • L-shaped bathtubs which can also be accessed through a side door. The tubs reduce risk since there is no longer a need to lift residents into the tub. The baths also have built-in aromatherapy diffusers and air jets. • Towel warmers • Integrated sound system By “going against the flow” of a traditional bathing room setup in a long-term care facility, we have continued to focus on resident-centered care by offering bath- ing as a multi-sensory experience to our residents – many of whom had not been able to have a bath in years due to various constraints. The new bathing rooms offer a calming experience based on what the resident wants (specialized bathtub, lighting, air jets, ambient music, aromatherapy, etc.) Our residents and staff are already enjoying the benefits of the new bathing rooms – winning this award is the icing on the cake! The award will be presented to members of our design team at the Planetree International conference in Boston in October 2015.
