REVIEW: The Full Bronté Literary Cabaret Following their successful run of The Full Bronte Literary Cabaret at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Scary Little Girls brought the show to The Place Theatre on Wednesday 24th October. This show was a wonderful combination of music, comedy, and storytelling, which focused on the Bronte family and their works with even a Kate Bush impression thrown in! This is a great show if you love audience participation! Throughout the show, Maria would pick on audience members, but always kept it fun and light-hearted, just as she did with her innuendos. Audience members were stroked, sniffed, sat on, kissed and licked, although some of the victims were rewarded with packets of crisps with the Bronte’s names on them on sticky labels. The contrast between the hosts Maria and Brannie was always a great source of humour and their characters played off each other very well. Maria was very exaggerated and glamorous in her beautiful red corset while Brannie, in her jumper and woolly hat, took on the role of the stooge. Brash moments such as when Brannie exposed her rear as she played Mr Rochester getting ready for bed mortified Maria (and the unsuspecting audience!), but despite their differences they held the show together well. Overall the piece was a ‘wuthering delight’ and had most of the audience howling with laughter. By Kezia-Rose Johnson

Review: Peter Pan (Lamphouse Theatre Company on 27th October 2018) Peter Pan was one of the most amazing plays I have ever seen! It was very creative and funny, and it surprised me because it made The Place feel like a big theatre. The set was a huge pink portable scaffolding on wheels, and it was used for the bunk beds, the flying scenes, the lost boys’ den, the pirate ship, and my favourite part, the crocodile’s snappy mouth to eat Captain Hook. I loved it! The three actors (James, Eleanor, and Richard) all took turns in playing Peter Pan and other characters in the play such as Tinkerbell, Daphne the Kung Fu Warrior Monkey Princess and Dave the Mop. Even though they played lots of parts it was easy to tell the difference because each character had a different hat, and the actors changed their voices and bodies to show the age and personality of the people they were playing. They used lots of different tricks and acrobatics to make you believe they could really fly and they played their own music and songs to help scene tell the story. I was amazed at their talent and thought they were very clever and funny. I would definitely recommend this show to families of all ages, and I bet you will enjoy it! The Lamphouse Theatre Company will be back with Beauty and the Beast in December, which I’m looking forward to because I’m wondering how they’ll do it! By Isabelle Brazier (age 9)

When everyone has finished, the lights will be turned off for a simultaneous Waldschattenspiel game. Saturday 29 December Sarpa Salpa at Esquires “David clearly had an excellent ear, attending concerts and collecting New Year’s Eve records that demonstrated adventurous taste, as well foresight,” said Slide Records’ Warren Allsop. “Within the collection are first pressings of NYE with the Workshop Boys records that are now considered lost classics of British jazz: recordings that broke new ground musically and are considered ‘holy grails’ for vinyl record collectors.”

The collection includes “Dusk Fire” and “Live” from the Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet, The New Jazz Orchestra’s “Le Dejeuner Sur L’Herbe”, Amancio D’Silva’s “Integration” and his follow-up with Joe Harriott “Hum-Dono”. “Despite the value of David’s collection, his friends recall always being welcome to borrow records provided, they were returned and “you put it back where you found it”,” said Warren. “When we became aware of the rarity and value of the collection his widow, Sue’s, first concern was that they should go to people who would listen to, enjoy and appreciate them, as that is what David would have wanted.” Warren has taken these words to heart and is inviting Slide customers to listen to some these very special records. Customers will also have a chance to get a first look the wider collection and raise a glass in thanks to David. Slide Record Shop, 9 The Arcade, Bedford MK40 1NS sliderecordshop.com
