Teaching Experience

University of Arkansas, associate professor (1995-present), undergraduate reporting and classes. Conceived idea for and organized The Lemke Digital Media Lab, a journalism practicum. Also developed, with Dr. Patsy Watkins, History of the Black Press. Advise graduate students and direct theses. For more than 22 years, served as faculty adviser to the student , Arkansas Traveler, and The Razorback yearbook. Additional Faculty Responsibilities

Faculty Athletics Representative for the University of Arkansas to the Southeastern Conference and to the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Appointed in 2018 by Chancellor Joseph Steinmetz to serve a five-year term of office.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Assistant Managing Editor News21, a national investigative reporting project of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Arizona State University (summer 2012 and 2013). Directed student reporters on producing stories pertinent to voting rights. Supervised reports on voting in the South, the Southwest, voting by mail and voting by using new technology. Primary editor on those stories as well as backup editor on others that became the online project “Who Can Vote,” jointly supported by the Carnegie Corporation, the Knight Foundation and the Cronkite School. (May – August 2012) Directed student reporters on producing stories pertinent to post-9/11 veterans and their transition to civilian life. Supervised reports on post-traumatic stress, non-traditional medical treatments, traumatic disabilities and managed Twitter posts for the online project “Back Home.” Roving Assigning Editor, Philadelphia Inquirer (Summers 1996-2010). Assigned and edited stories on every desk in The Inquirer system for 15 summers. That included Night City Editor, Weekend City Editor, National/Foreign Editor, Asst. Business Editor, Science/Medical Editor, Asst. Features Editor, et. al. Editor, Neighbors North, Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia, Responsible for the daily production of a newspaper that covers Montgomery and Bucks Counties, the second- and fourth- largest counties in Pennsylvania. Supervised two county editors, a sports editor and had overall responsibility to deploy 24 correspondents. Stories ranged form coverage of government, courts and police to a variety of features. (Jan. 1995-August 1995) Assistant City Editor, Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia, Supervised a 6-reporter neighborhood team, ethnics beat reporter and transportation reporter that covered spot stories and off-the-news features for each major section of Philadelphia.
