Dear Championship Finalist:

On behalf of the United States Sailing Association, I would like to compliment you on your accomplishments. Your success has put you amongst the elite sailors in the United States. Congratulations!

I would also like to express my appreciation to the numerous volunteers for their endless time and effort to make junior sailing events so successful. Without the dedication of these people, the numerous championships would not happen.

The commitment of the organizers and the ability and character of each sailor will make this Nationals an outstanding championship. I am certain the 1993 US SAILING/Rolex Junior Women's Championship will be filled with some very exhilarating racing.

Please keep in mind that there are several reasons you are competing at the National level. The main . reasons are your sailing and sportsmanship skills. Your ability to have fun, to continually improve on your sailing capabilities and to broaden your friendships throughout the United States are also part of competing at the National level. This is a great deal to accomplish in one week, but give it your best shot and remember to have fun!! Good luck and smooth sailing!

Best regards,

WELCOME TO THE LA PORTE BAYSHORE AREA

As the Mayor of La Porte, Texas, I offer my sincere wishes for a successful sailing championship to the ladies of the Houston Yacht Club and participants of the United States Sailing/Rolex Jr. Women's Championship for the Leiter Trophy.

This event will reflect the importance of sailing for the young women sailors in the United States and help spread the word and inform sailors not only in our country, but also in other countries, of the importance of premier sailing for young women sailors of today.

With Galveston Bay as the site for the country's most prestigious national junior sailing events for women sailors, the Houston Yacht Club will welcome more than 70 of the nation's most competitive women sailors for a race that will be tremendous and require a lot of skill and competitive experience.

Rolex Watch U.S.A. is to be congratulated for sponsoring the U.S. Sailing's National Junior Program since 1989. Also, in addition to the championships, Rolex sponsors a team and a national network of training clinics that are designed to lead young women sailors to the national competitive arena.

August is indeed an exciting month in Texas and especially for the La Porte Bayshore Area as the best junior sailors in the country will be here to vie for national crowns.

We welcome each and every contestant to this wonderful and competitive event and wish them well. HOUSTON YACHT CLUB Founded 1897 Chartered 1908

PEDRICK, ELIZABETH 9 Ellery Rd., Newport, RL 02840 LEITER TROPHY HISTORY

The U.S. Junior Women's Sailing Championship for the Nancy Leiter Clagett Trophy began in 1980 at the Ida Lewis Yacht Club in Newport, R.I. Nancy Leiter Clagett, who was a skilled sailor, well known for her competitive ability, good sportsmanship, and charm, spearheaded the formation of the junior sailing program at Ida Lewis. After she died in 1977, her husband, Thomas Clagett, gave a fleet of six Lasers to the Ida Lewis junior program. The Nancy Leiter Clagett Trophy, and antique silver bowl was donated to USYRU by Mr. Clagett in memory of his wife.

In honor of his wife, a championship was begun to promote, encourage, and develop junior women's sailing. Girls eighteen years and under were invited from the surrounding Narragansett Bay Yacht Clubs to compete for the trophy. For the first four years this event was held at Ida Lewis.

In 1982 and 1983 the championship became a ladder even for two years for the New England Yacht Racing Council USYRU and was held at the Beverly Yacht Club in Marion, Massachusetts, in 1984. In early 1985, USYRU officially sanctioned the National Junior Women's Regatta on a trial basis as an open competition for women age 13-18. The Rochester Yacht Club on Lake Ontario hosted the event.

Thanks to an ambitious and diligent committee, the Leiter Trophy Championship succeeded in meeting all the USYRU Regatta as the U.S. Junior Women's Sailing Championship in October 1985. In the following years the event was held at the San Diego Yacht Club in 1986; Bay Head Yacht Club, New in 1988; Gulfport Yacht Club, Gulfport, Mississippi in 1989; the Ida Lewis Yacht Club for the event's tenth anniversary in 1990; Sausalito Yacht Club, California in 1991 and Columbia Yacht Club, Chicago, Illinois in 1992. Rolex Watch USA became the official event sponsor in 1990 and has pledged their support through 1999. Even before Rolex became a sponsor, they subsidized Leiter Clinics preceding the National events in 1989 and 1990.

This regatta has enjoyed tremendous growth from its small beginnings to its National status as the U.S. Junior Women's Sailing Championship. Young girls from all over the U.S. and Canada have participated in this event. Many have gone on with great success to collegiate and Olympic level competition.

The purpose of this event is to encourage and develop women's sailing in the U.S. by supporting junior women sailors. It is a successful event because of people like Tom Clagett, Rolex, the governing body of the sport of sailing- the U.S. Sailing Association and all the volunteers who give so freely of their time and energy. HISTORY OF THE HOUSTON YACHT CLUB

In the summer of 1897, a group of yachtsmen who kept their boats in in downtown Houston formed a yacht club. On February 2, 1898, at a general membership meeting in the office of Dr. W. B. Griffen, Dan E. Kennedy was elected the first commodore of the Houston Yacht Club. Forming a yacht club was the easy part, but sailing from Main Street to Galveston Bay on Buffalo Bayou (a small river) some 30 miles away must have been a real challenge.

In the early day, HYC sailors felt themselves on the verge of extinction. With the advent of the steam-powered launch and the diesel and gasoline engines, many yachtsmen believed the sailing boat was permanently relegated to history. Instead of fighting, they eventually joined the prospering power boat brigade, merging with the younger but larger Houston Launch Club.

Houston Launch Club was founded in 1906, establishing its first wharf at the foot of Travis Street (now downtown Houston). About 1910, HLC built a club house in Harrisburg (now a part of Houston's east end) opposite Brady Island and today' s turning basin. Its members included Past Commodore C.G. Pillot, whose beautiful 103 foot Nathaneal Herrshott designed steam engine yacht "Augusta" was then considered to be the largest yacht west of the Mississippi.

In 1926, the two clubs sold their respective properties and pooled resources to build the present club house on the north shore of Galveston Bay. Records from the merger indicated that the "Houston Launch Club" was to be the name of the new organization, but somehow the sailors prevailed and the Houston Yacht Club kept her maiden name. However, we acquired the HLC burgee with the motor propeller on it. In 1927, the group moved to its "magnificent and commodious" new home, as it was described at the time, a Spanish three story coral-colored club house that was soon dubbed "The Pink Palace".

During World War II, the Pink Palace was taken over by the U.S. Coast Guard, which converted it to a cadet training and boarding facility. HYC members volunteered the use of their motor boats to help patrol the , a vital oil port during the war. During the war, HYC members continued sailing on the club owned '' Class" gaff rigged sloops.

During the 1960's and 70', the highly successful youth program known as the "Ragnots" was developed. The Ragnots have produced more Sears Cup winners than any other yacht club. The program also produced a Sunfish National Champion and an Olympic Silver Medalist.

The 500 members today enjoy the harbor, with 560 we storage slips, over 100 dry storage spaces, a fine remodeled club house and a prime location on Galveston Bay, one of the nation's largest bays. The warm water and prevailing southeast breeze of the , have contributed to the success and enjoyment of boating at HYC for our first 90+ years. A WORD ON LOCAL SAILING CONDITIONS

It is always a challenge to predict the wind on Galveston Bay. The NOAA forecast is always "south-southeast; 10-15 knots; bay water slightly choppy to choppy". Anything different means we are in the middle of a hurricane, and they haven't realized it yet.

SOUTHEASTERLY This is the SEA BREEZE with a relatively constant direction of 135 (plus or minus 10 degrees) at 12-18 knots. This is wonderful sailing breeze when it settles in and is fairly constant. Phases are under 15 degrees and last 5-1 0 minutes. Only a frontal passage or thunderstorm will disrupt move by ~ there will be moderate shifts towards the cells.

The bay is only 10-12 feet deep and tides are relatively unimportant. Current is usually not a problem, but should not be totally ignored. Shallow water can cause a nasty chop to build up when the breeze strengthens.

Daytime air temperatures range from 80 to 95 degrees with nighttime lows 70 to 80 degrees. The wind is southeasterly BOOk of the time. Beach water temperature 85 degrees. 1993 HYC LEITER TROPHY STEERING COMMITTEE
