Dear Parent / Carer

Thank you for choosing Tollbar as your son’s/daughter’s Secondary School. We pride ourselves in providing all students with an excellent education.

As an Academy, we are always committed to smooth and timely transitions that allow each child to settle in, get to know their teachers and make new friends. We believe that you, as parents and carers, play a key role in this transition so you too can feel reassured that your child will be safe and happy. Unfortunately, at this time of global uncertainty we don’t know at this stage how long the current closures will continue; therefore, it is difficult to publish details of our usual transition programme. However, let me reassure you that we will endeavour to make sure your child is prepared and ready for starting the next stage of their education with us.

There is a ‘Year 6’ tab on our main Academy Website, www.tollbaracademy.co.uk Here you will find a presentation that would usually be presented during our annual New Intake Parents’ Evening. We have produced a Frequently Asked Questions section that should be helpful and answer any key questions you have in order to prepare your child.

When the time comes for your child to start at the Academy, we will ensure that additional time is taken to settle them in, including longer lunch breaks and extra time to orientate themselves within the Academy.

At the Academy we have a Primary Transition Officer, Mr G Cookson, Assistant Principal. He will co-ordinate your child’s transition into secondary education with the support of the Pastoral Team.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr Cookson at the Academy via telephone 01472 500505 or via email [email protected].

Yours faithfully

Mrs C L Yates Principal

Dear Parent / Carer

RE HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME

Following recent Government legislation relating to pupil absence (Statutory Instrument 2006.No 1751), the Governors have been required to update the Academy’s policy regarding holidays during term time.

In the past you may have taken your child out of school during term time for a holiday or for reasons other than illness. The Governors are obliged to inform you that leave of absence for the purpose of a holiday is no longer permitted. The DfE have amended the 2006 regulations and removed the discretion of the Head Teachers to authorise leave of absence for the purpose of a holiday, therefore holidays during term time will not be authorised. If a holiday is taken in term time it will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and is likely to result in a Fixed Penalty Charge Notice, under section 44 of the Education Act 1996

The Education Welfare Service will be informed of any days where holidays have been taken with or without requesting leave of absence.

Options open to the Education Welfare Service include:  the implementation of the Fast Track Procedure, which commences with a School Attendance Panel Meeting, and could lead to prosecution, under Section 444 of the Education Act 1996  a Penalty Notice (£60, rising to £120 if not paid within 21 days, leading to prosecution if not paid within 28 days) for each parent and for each child.

A copy of the Attendance Policy and further details regarding Leave of Absence can be found on the Academy website www.tollbaracademy.co.uk under Parents information.

The aim of the Senior Management Team and the Governing Body is to work with you to enhance the achievements that the Academy has made and to build upon the success of recent years.

Yours faithfully

Mrs S J Holt Vice Principal

Dear Parent/Carer

Mobile Phones

Students are not allowed to bring mobile phones onto the Academy premises. This has been a clearly stated policy for a number of years.

This Policy has been maintained for the following reasons:

 Mobiles are banned from all external examinations.  Infringement of the Examination Board rules regarding mobile phones and other electronic devices can result in disqualification.  Mobiles have disrupted internal examinations.  Mobiles have disrupted lessons.  Mobiles can be used for bullying by text and by phone calls.  Mobile phone cameras can be used to take photos of other students for bullying purposes.  Mobile phone photos of staff and students have been posted on the internet.  Video phones have been used to video staff and students without their consent and some have been published on the internet, often with the intent of bringing the Academy into disrepute.  Studies show that test marks increased by 6% in schools which did not allow mobile phones.  Mobile phones are a prime target for theft, either for the SIM card or the phone, or both. Statistics show that around 742,000 mobile phones are stolen each year.

In order to protect students from the misuse of phones, and to ensure that lessons and examinations are not disrupted, mobile phones will not be allowed in the Academy. Any student bringing a mobile phone into school will initially have the phone confiscated for 5 days on each occasion. Punishments will escalate if a student is persistently defiant.

Regular random checks for mobile phones, particularly around external and internal examination times, will take place with the electronic scanning device.

If there is a serious medical or other problem where a mobile phone is essential for use before or after the Academy day, parents must contact their child’s Head of House at the Academy to discuss the issue.

Yours faithfully

Mrs C L Yates Principal

Music at Tollbar Academy 2020

Tuition

All students do instrumental work as part of their music lessons. However, in addition, students can also receive paired or individual tuition on the following instruments:

 Acoustic, Electric and Bass Guitar  Drum kit and Percussion  Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Alto and Tenor Saxophone  Piano (only individual)  Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba  Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass  Voice

Most of this tuition takes place during the Academy day and a charge is made for these lessons. Students with PP status receive financial assistance from the Academy. Please contact Mr J Longden at the Academy for further information. If you would like to receive instrumental or vocal tuition, please complete the Music at Tollbar Academy Form enclosed.

Many of our students take graded music examinations on their instruments/voice. The Examination boards we use are Associated Board, Trinity Guildhall, London College and Rock School.

We would like you to tell us if you already play an instrument – even if it is outside of school – e.g. piano, and if you have taken any grade examinations on your instrument.

Dear Parent / Carer

Tollbar MAT are now in partnership with MAPAS (North East : Music and Performing Arts Hub) for all of our music tuition provision. This is a fantastic opportunity for students at Tollbar. Through MAPAS, we are continuing to provide instrumental and vocal tuition of a very high standard. Teachers are professional and active musicians in their own right, who are also accredited and verified by MAPAS.

Currently, we offer the following provision: Piano, Violin, Cello, Guitar (either classical or rock/pop), Drums, Vocal (Classical, Pop & Musical Theatre), Trumpet, Trombone, Clarinet, Saxophone and Flute. Although this is a thriving tuition programme, we are looking to further develop our remit of instrumental lessons, so if your child is interested in receiving a lesson we do not currently offer, then please contact Mr J Longden (Curriculum Leader – Music).

MAPAS offer varying durations of tuition, all of which are in the curriculum timetable, but are rotated so a student is not absent for the same proportion of a certain lesson each week. MAPAS teach 10 lessons per term across three terms (30 lessons a year)
