VII RESUMO "Cecidomyiinae (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) das Restingas da Barra de Maricá, ltaipuaçu e Carapebus (Rio de Janeiro, Brasil): descrições e dados biológicos". Nas restingas da Barra de Maricá, ltaipuaçu e Carapebus foram encontradas 108 espécies de Cecidomyiinae associadas a 53 espécies de plantas distribuídas em 42 gêneros e 32 famílias. t Noventa e três espécies de Cec1oomyiinae eram cecidógenas, 4 predadoras, 5 inquilinas de galhas ,:) e 6 tinham larvas livres. As espécies galhadoras estavam associadas a 47 espécies de plantas (36 gêneros e 28 famílias). A maioria das galhas era foliar (63), 13 desenvolveram-se a partir das gemas, 9 ocorreram na inflorescência, botão ou pedúnculo floral, 3 no fruto e 1 na gavinha. As Myrtaceae destacaram-se como a família de planta com maior riqueza de galhas, seguidas das Burseraceae, Nyctaginaceae, Sapotaceae, Erythroxylaceae, Malpighiaceae e.Solanaceae. Onze gêneros novos e quatorze novas espécies de Cecidomyiinae foram descritos (larva, pupa, macho, fümea e galha), larva de três espécies e pupa de duas outras foram descritas, duas novas combinações foram propostas e novos registros de plantas hospedeiras e de localidades foram assinalados. Na restinga da Barra de Maricá foram encontradas 79 espécies de Cecidomyiinae, em Carapebus 64 e em ltaipuaçu 41. O índice de Sorensen revelou que a restinga da Barra de Maricá e de Itaipuaçu são mais similares entre si quanto à fauna de Cecidomyiinae, confirmando uma relação positiva entre proximidade geográfica e similaridade faunística. Vlll ABSTRACT "Cecidomyiinae (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) of "Restingas" of Barra de Maricá, Itaipuaçu and Carapebus (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil): descriptions and biological data". At "restingas" of Barra de Maricá, Itaipuaçu and Carapebus, 108 species of Cecidomyiinae were found in association with 53 plant species distributed among 42 genera and 32 families. 93 Cecidomyiinae species were cecidogenous, 4 predators, 5 inquilines of galls and 6 had free living larvae . Gall maker·specieswere associated with 47 plantspecies (36 genera and 28 families). The majority of the galls were leaf ones (63); 13 developed from bud; 9 occurred in inflorescence, closed flower or flower peduncle; 3 in fruits and 1 in clasper. The Myrtaceae were the first plant family in richness of galls followed by Burseraceae, Nyctaginaceae, Sapotaceae, Erythroxylaceae, Malpighiaceae and Solanaceae. 11 new genera and 14 new species of Cecidomyiinae were described (larva, pupa, male, female and gall), larva of 3 species and pupae of 2 others were described, 2 new combinations were proposed and new records of host plants and Iocalities registered. 79 Cecidomyiinae species were found at "restinga" of Barra de Maricá, 64 at Carapebus e 41 at Itaipuaçu. Sorensen index revealed that the "restingas" of Barra de Maricá and ltaipuçu are more similar in Cecidomyidae fauna, confirming a positive relation between geographical proximity and faunasimilarity. INTRODUCTION Van Alphen and Vet (1986) refer to the work of Arthur E. Weis (1983) on a torymid wasp that attacks a gall midge on goldenrod. This system seems to be quite well-studied, particularly, but not exclusively, by Weis. Van Alphen and Vet point out that the parasitoids tend to attack about the same proportion of hosts in patches (galls) with varying numbers of hosts. This has implications for the foraging strategy that the parasitoids use. In this note I want to do three things: (1) outline the basic biology of the organisms involved, (2) describe the results of a foraging experiment conducted by Weis (1983), and (3) interpret the results in terms of Oaten’s stochastic model of optimal foraging. Arthur E. Weis is coauthor of a book (Abrahamson and Weis 1997) on the biology of a three trophic-level system involving a goldenrod stem-gall maker Eurosta solidaginis, its host plant and its enemies. The work described here is earlier work, done an a different species. The biology of the system The species of greatest interest are the torymid parasitoid Torymus capite, which is a larval parasitoid of the gall midge Asteromyia carbonifera, which itself makes blister-like galls on the leaves of goldenrod, especially Canadian goldenrod, Solidgo canadiensis L. (Compositae). There are three generations of gall midge (and its parasitoids) each year.

An examination of the known midge host/midge plant host associations for species of Platygasterparasitoid wasps seems to indicate a number of natural par­ asitoid species groups restricted to specific plant families. Midge hosts seem less indicative for platygastrid relationships, but several exceptions from this rule exist. The possible reasons for this are discussed. It is also shown that species of Platy­ gaster with known host associations generally prefer midges on plant families which are not the families generally prefered by the midges. Furthermore, a com­ parison of the known midge host/midge plant host associations for the genera of the "Platygaster-cluster" and the "Synopeas-cluster" shows great differences in the general preferences of the clusters. Results obtained showed 22 types of galls collected from leaf, vein leaf, petioles, stem, and inflorescence of nineteen species belonging to fifteen distinct families. Concerning gall morphology, the following were collected: globoid, conicle, discoidal, fusiform, shell-shape, indefinite, and one substituition of an ovary by an immature. As principal induc- ers were found insects of the families Cecidomyiidae (Diptera), Psyllidae, and Diaspididae (Sternorrhyncha/ Hemiptera). As parasitoids the most common are of the Chalcidoidea superfamily (Hymenoptera) and, as occasional inquilines, Polyxenidae (Diplopoda) and Psocodea (Psocoptera). The results of this study contribute to existing of knowledge host-plant diversity and gall-associated insects in rocky fields, cerrado, and gallery forests.

Burks* The genus Tetrastichus Haliday (Hymenoptera : Eulophidae) in- cludes a large number of species of minute chalcid-flies. These may be either primary parasites or hyperparasites, and they attack a wide variety of hosts (see host list hereinafter), including such destructive pests ib the Hessian fly and the cotton boll weevil and many kinds of fchrips, aphids, midges, leaf miners, scales, tent caterpillars, borers, roaches, beetles, and gall-makers injurious to agriculture, horticulture, and forestry. The}* have been reared from the eggs, larvae, and pupae of other insects, as well as from many plant galls. Economi- cally, therefore, this is an important group of the Chaleidoidea, and a thorough understanding of its species and relationships is desirable. Twenty-three species are herein described for the first time. From a taxonomic standpoint this genus is a difficult one for several reasons. The species are so small that very good microscope equipment is needed for studying them. Specimens are only lightly sclerotized, so that they almost invariably shrivel badly in drying; this tends to conceal or distort their morphological characters. It has not, however, been possible satisfactorily to study specimens pre- served in alcohol or on slides.
