Nishagandhi Sangeetha Awards conferred ( July 24) Minister for Tourism Kadakampally Surendran presented the inaugural Nishagandhi Sangeetha Puraskaram to musicians Parassala B. Ponnammal and T V.Gopalakrishnan. Instituted by Kerala Tourism, the award carries 1.5 lakh in cash, a citation and a memento.

Sangita Kalanidhi Award ( July 23) S. Sowmya has been chosen for the Sangita Kalanidhi award of the Music Academy. She will preside over 93rd annual conference of the Academy to be held between December 12, 2019, and January 1, 2020. Sangeet Natak Fellowship Zakir Hussain,dancer Sonal Mansingh,dancer and choreographer Jatin Goswami and Bharatnatyam exponent K.Kalyanasundaram Pillai have been selected for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowships in the field of performing arts. Garuda-VI: Indo-French Joint Air Exercise Indian Air Force (IAF) and Armée de l’Air (French Air Force) are participating in Garuda VI, a bilateral air exercise at Mont de Marsan in France. The last edition of joint exercise between Indian Air Force and France Air Force was held in June 2014 at Air Force Station, Jodhpur, Rajasthan. This year is the 6th edition of exercise which took place from 1 July to 12 July 2019.

France Passed legislation taxing digital giants France became the first country in the world to impose a tax on digital companies. The tax is known as the GAFA (Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon). The law will levy a 3% tax on total annual revenues of the largest tech firms providing services to French consumers.

BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting held at Brazil on 27 July 2019 BRICS nations called on all states to prevent the financing of terrorist networks and terrorist actions from their territories. India was represented by Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways VK Singh. BRICS consists of five nations of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

World’s First battery-powered cruise ship named Roald Amundsen The world’s first cruise ship propelled partially by battery power sailed out from northern Norway on its maiden voyage. The hybrid expedition cruise ship, Roald Amundsen, can take 500 passengers.

European Commission elects its first female president German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen has been elected as the European Commission’s first female president. She will replace Jean-Claude Juncker.

Christine Lagarade resigns as IMF Managing Director The International Monetary Fund, or IMF MD Christine Lagarde has resigned ahead of a decision on her nomination to become head of the European Central Bank, ECB. If the European Council approves her nomination, she will become the central bank’s first-ever female leader She has been heading the IMF since 2011.

Aadhaar Seva Kendra in Delhi and Vijayawada The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has operationalized its First ‘Aadhaar Seva Kendra’ (ASKs) in Delhi and Vijayawada. Aadhaar Seva Kendras being set up by UIDAI will be covering 53 cities across India. These centers are similar to the concept of Passport Seva Kendras. Objective: These new centres seek to provide more touch points to public for availing Aadhaar enrolment and updation services.

India has successfully launched its second lunar mission-Chandrayaan-2 Launched on 22 July 2019 Launched by using the heavy-lift launch vehicle GSLV-Mark-Three. Originally Chandrayaan-2 was planned to be launched on the 15th July 2019.

ISRO plans to launch its solar mission Aditya-L1 in 2020 ISRO is to launch its solar mission called the Aditya L-1 by 2020. The Aditya L-1 solar program will be studying the Sun’s corona which is basically the outer layers. The mission will also try to understand and predict climate change on Earth. The Aditya L-1 satellite will be inserted in a halo orbit about 1.5 million km from Earth.

BCCI announces Byju’s as Team India’s new sponsors Bangalore Based education startup Byju’s app has replaced Oppo India as the official Team India sponsor.The deal period will begin from 5 September, 2019 until 31 March, 2022. Byju Raveendran is the founder and chief executive of Byju’s.

‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’: Government of India launches water conservation campaign Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched a water conservation campaign on July 1,2019 with an emphasis on 1592 stressed blocks in 256 districts.. The ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’ will focus on five aspects -water conservation and rainwater harvesting, renovation of traditional and other water bodies, reuse of water and recharging of structures, watershed development, and intensive afforestation, Drinking Water Sanitation.

Longest electrified railway tunnel in India commissioned The 6.6-km tunnel is built between Cherlopalli and Rapuru stations under Southern Railway . The tunnel is part of the recently completed Obulavaripalli- Venkatachalam new railway line.

Tarun Chaudhri becomes first pilot to accomplish wingsuit skydive jump Tarun Chaudhri Wing commander became the first pilot of Indian Armed Forces (IAF) to do a wingsuit jump. It was done during the Kargil Diwas celebrations at Air Force Station Jodhpur on 21-22 July 2019

Two New Districts In Tamil Nadu Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced the creation of two new districts carved out from Kanchipuram and Tirunelveli. This will take the total number of districts in the State to 35.

Meghalaya becomes 1st state to ensure water conservation Meghalaya became the 1st state to ensure conservation of water & have water policy. The aim of the policy is to spot water resources as common pool resource, to provide safe & hygienic water for drinking, sanitation & livelihood development to all residents.

Odisha Secretariat renamed as ‘Lok Seva Bhawan Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced that the Sachivalaya or Secretariat building in Bhubaneswar will now be called ‘Lok Seva Bhavan’.

HRD Minister launches UGC scheme of ‘Paramarsh’ to promote quality assurance in higher education Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank Union Minister for Human Resource Development of India , launched ‘Paramarsh’ – a University Grants Commission (UGC) scheme on 18 July 2019. It will mentor National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) Accreditation Aspirant Institutions. The scheme will target 1000 Higher Education Institutions for mentoring with a specific focus on quality.

Andhra Pradesh became the first state to reserve 75% of jobs locals Andhra Pradesh became the first state to reserve 75% of jobs in private industrial units and factories for locals. The reservation would 14 National Affairs be implemented irrespective of whether the private entities get financial or any other help from the government.

Biswa Bhusan Harichandan took charge as new Governor of Andhra Pradesh in Rajbhavan in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. Gujarat’s new Governor Acharya Devvrat was sworn in on 22 July 2019.

POCSO Amendment Bill (July 24) The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2019 has been passed by Rajya Sabha. The bill seeks to enhance punishment, including a provision for death penalty, for committing sexual crimes against children. The government has sanctioned 1023 fast track courts for speedy dispensation of pending cases under POCSO and sexual assault.

RTI Amendment Bill 2019 ( July 25) Parliament has passed the Right to Information (Amendment) Bill, 2019 with the Rajya Sabha approving. The Lok Sabha has already passed the bill. The Bill seeks to empower the Centre to make rules to decide the tenure, salary, allowances and other terms of service of Information Commissioners of the Central Information Commission and State Information Commissions.

Muslim Women Bill 2019 ( July 25) Parliament passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2019. This act will free Muslim women from the practice of Triple Talaq.

Companies (Amendment) Bill ( July 25) The Lok Sabha passed The Companies (Amendment) Bill 2019 which seeks to amend the Companies Act 2013. Under the Bill, any unspent annual CSR funds must be transferred to the funds under Schedule 7 of the Act
