The setting, in the lovely park in Benahavís with the background of the moun- tains bathed in sunshine, is spectacular, and ITS filled the ‘Roman’ auditorium with a most enjoyable evening of drama and music. The host, Carmel Rogers, opened with a minute’s si- lence to remember and re- spect the unfortunate people killed and injured in the Lon- don Bridge terror attack the previous evening. The play, by David Tris- tram, was Last Tango in Bena- havís, a farce based on the de- mise of an amateur drama so- ciety, and the one-liners pro- duced gales of laughter from a very appreciative packed house. It poked gentle fun at village people of little talent struggling to present drama – one exchange brought the house down. “I can’t do this,” says Ber- nard, the set builder, “I can’t act.” To which the director re- plies, “You don’t have to act, just do what the rest of us do.” With a small cast of Eileen Audas, Rachel Armstrong, An- drew Gommersall, and Miles Rendle, Martin Curd made his directing debut, and they all performed with zest and en- thusiasm. To have Debbie Fisher parading across the stage to denote scene changes was an inspired idea, and it all added up to a riot of fun. Over the years the interval has become a very large part of the evening’s enjoyment, with everyone arriving laden with tables, chairs, blankets and cushions to spread among the trees on the lawn, drink- ing and eating. ITS was lucky to have Stella, Sam Oliver, and Karen Danzig giving, free of charge, their professional singing in the second half to bring a lovely evening to a close, and we all staggered away carry- ing our picnic equipment with happy smiles on our faces. The entire proceeds of the performance and raffle, were in aid of the charity Age Con- cern España, and produced in excess of €3,000. 38 June 9th to 15th 2017 FOOD&DRINK SUR IN ENGLISH
