International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Invention ISSN (Online): 2319 – 7722, ISSN (Print): 2319 – 7714 www.ijhssi.org ǁ Volume 3 ǁ Issue 1 ǁ January 2014 ǁ PP.01-05 Trends of Pakistani English Fiction from Partition to 1970s Munnzza Riaz Department of English University of Sargodha ABSTRACT: Trend of Pakistani English Fiction Since Partition to 1970; is a multidimensional effort to not only to highlight the prevalent themes and trends of the fiction , but also to bring into limelight those legends of Pakistani English Fiction, who can be considered the founders of English fiction in Pakistan. The phenomenon includes a lot of names, which are now completely forgotten or are taken for granted by the modern generation of Pakistani English Fiction readers. These themes and trends of the fiction of the time also witness the socio- political and cultural conditions of the times in Pakistan. However the primary focus of this piece of writing is on the trends and themes of Pakistani English Fiction from partition to 1970s, as it was the time when Pakistani English fiction started developing itself as an independent genre. KEYWORDS: Pakistani English Fiction, Trends, Themes, Writers, Decades, Prominent I. INTRODUCTION Pakistani English Literature is the name of a fully developed and independent literature. It was started emerging most probably after 1940; right when the freedom movement reached at its peak. We can find the traces of rebellion and quest for identity as a separate nation in the pieces of writings, which were written during the era by the hands of the prominent literary figures of the time, including Ahmad Ali, Mumtaz Shahnawaz and Shahid Soharwardi. -

Professor English Department LCWU, Lahore, Pakistan Abstract The paper aims at exploring salient features of Progressive Movement in Urdu literature and taking into account points of comparison with Modernism in Europe. The paper explores evolution of Progressive Movement over the years and traces influence of European Modernism on it. Thesis statement: The Progressive Movement in Urdu literature was tremendously influenced by European Modernism. 1. Modernism The term Modernism is used to distinguish the literature that developed out of the First World War. Modernism deliberately broke with Western traditions of certainty. It came into being as they were collapsing. It challenged all the old modes. Important precursors of Modernism were Nietzsche, Freud and Marx who in different degrees rejected certainties in religion, philosophy, psychology and politics. They came to distrust the stability and order offered in earlier literary works. It broke with literary conventions. Like any new movement it rebelled against the old. It was nihilistic and tended to believe in its own self sufficiency. “Readers were now asked to look into themselves, to establish their real connections with the world and to ignore the rules of religion and society. Modernism wants therefore to break the old connections, because it believes that these are artificial and exploitative…” (Smith, P.xxi) The people are provoked to think and decide for themselves. They are expected to reconstruct their moralities. The concern for social welfare continued. “Every period has its dominant religion and hope…and “socialism” in a vague and undefined sense was the hope of the early twentieth century.”(Smith xiii) Marxism suffered an eclipse after the Second World War. -

HOD, Department English University of Gujrat, Gujrat Abstract This study focuses on the critical evaluation of the most frequent metaphors in the Pakistani English poetry (PakEP) of 21st century. The poetic corpus includes the works of the maximum number of the poets from the whole of the country (sixty in number). They all belong to the post 9/11 time period. The corpus has thus two prime concerns as recency and representativeness. The researcher sets three objectives; first, which are the most frequent metaphors in the 21st C Pakistani English poetry; second, what the particular mood do these metaphors exhibit; third, to which school of poetry do these poets show their affiliation. With the use of AntConc3.2.1, the frequency, the concordance and the collocation of the most frequent metaphors have been discovered. Parallel to these, the description, interpretation and explanation of the metaphors have been conducted with the help of Fairclough’s (2000) model. The present study indicates that the recent English poetry of Pakistani young lot is thematically overwhelmed by love, heart and life. Secondly, despair and frustration are the moods of such poets in general. Thirdly, Pakistani English poetry is more akin to classicism and romanticism than modernism. -

Terrorism, Islamization, and Human Rights: How Post 9/11 Pakistani English Literature Speaks to the World Abstract The start of the twenty-first century has witnessed a simultaneous rise of three areas of scholarly interest: 9/11 literature, human rights discourse, and War on Terror studies. The resulting intersections between literature and human rights, foregrounded by an overarching narrative of terror, have led to a new area of interdisciplinary enquiry broadly classed under human rights literature, at the point of the convergence of which lies the idea of human empathy. -

CHAPTER-1 : A BRIEF HISTORY OF PAKISTANI FICTION AND PORTRAYAL OF SOCIETY IN PAKISTANI ENGLISH FICTION 1 1.1 INTRODUCTION Percy Bysshe Shelley in his masterpiece A Defence of Poetry has said that poets are ―the unacknowledged legislators of mankind.‖- (Shelly, A Defence of Poetry).The function of a legislator is to lay down the law, a settled course of action that men may follow. All literary works show us various aspects of the society from politics, economics and culture, via various genres of literature from time to time. Literature is considered to be the criticism of life because it mirrors the society, people and the time in which it is produced. Conventionally, literature holds a mirror to life. Corroborating this idea of connection of society and literature, Hippolyte Taine, a French critic gives a scientific approach to the study of literature through his theory of race, milieu and moment. According to this theory Men, Milieu and Message, cannot be separated from literature. As mentioned by the Encyclopedia Britannica: ―Race, milieu, and moment, according to the French critic Hippolyte Taine, are three principal motives or conditioning factors behind any work of art.‖- (―Race,Milieu and Moment‖, Encylopedia Britanica) The philosopher analyses the scientific approach to the work of literature to find out the motivational factor which created that work. To validate what Taine writes, there are many examples of works of literature such as portrayal of social problems during Victorian age in the novels of Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy, the satirical presentation of society of restoration in the comedy of manners of Oscar Wilde and the portrayal of Indian society in the works of Raja Rao, Bhabhani Bhattacharya, Mulk Raj Anand, R.K.Narayan and Ruskin Bond. -
Neo Orientalism and Contemporary Pakistani Fiction in English
NUML Journal of Critical Inquiry Vol 15(II) December, 2017 ISSN 2222-5706 Black Masks, White Skin: Neo Orientalism and Contemporary Pakistani Fiction in English Sadaf Mehmood1 Fauzia Janjua2 Abstract Orientalism is an academic discipline where series of representations about the Orients are recorded to dominate and rule them. These representations subject them as primitive, uncivilized, exotic, other. Binaries of East/ West, Orient/ Occident, Centre/ Margin are used to define both nations. The oppressed and marginalized nations appear to deconstruct these constructions by celebrating their rich historical and cultural heritage. The literature of Pakistan in English has its traces in its colonial past. The present paper aims to analyze a portrayal of Pakistani society in Pakistani fiction in English. The study is based on qualitative form of research by using the technique of close textual analysis of selected fiction. The works of Uzma Aslam Khan, Mohsin Hamid, Bina Shah, Nadeem Aslam and Qaisra Shahraz are selected to analyze the portrayal of Pakistani society. The study explores Janus-faced nature of Pakistani fiction that at one end aims to dismantle barbaric and uncivilized figure of the nation by portraying an esteemed and dignified nation that has, as a Muslim minority, history of great rule over subcontinent’s Hindu majority. However, on the other, the discursive notion of realism provides lens to perceive the uncouth rituals of contemporary society. The study investigates this shift, from postcolonial commemoration to representing a muddle of unseen evils in the name of ignorant traditions and customs, to compete needs of international market. Being inspired by the Western hegemonic discourse, these writers silence the obscenities of colonial encounter and appear as neo-orientalists who are natives in origin but English in taste and intellect. -

Ahmed Ali (–): Bridges and Links East and West In exile my sun has set. —Ahmed Ali, “In Exile I Remember My People and Feel Sad” A , Pakistani short-story writer, novelist, poet, translator, critic, anthologist, teacher, diplomat, and businessman, died on Friday, January , in Karachi. He had been in ill health for several years. Writing in both Urdu and English, Ali produced a number of innovative literary and scholarly works which have received acclaim from critics in both South Asia and the West. Born in Delhi on July , the first child of Syed Shujauddin, a civil servant, and Ahmad Kaniz Asghar Begum, Ali started his formal education at age five by learning Qur’≥nic recitation. After his father died in , he went to live with his father’s elder brother, Syed Bahauddin, a man of circumscribed vision, attitude, and taste. Ali started his study of English in at Wesley Mission High School, Azamgarh, and in enrolled in Government High School, Aligarh, where he met and became life-long friends with Mohsin Abdullah, son of the dynamic, liberal champion of Muslim women’s education, Shaikh Muhammad Abdullah, and the entire Abdullah family, which included the eldest daughter, Rashid Jahan. In Ali matriculated at Aligarh Muslim University, where, by chance, he enrolled in an English poetry class with Eric C. Dickinson, a minor Oxbridge poet serving as Professor and Chairman of the Depart- ment of English, who then became the young man’s mentor. Ali also met another of Dickinson’s students, Raja Rao, who was preparing to study in France. At this time Ali published his first English poem in Aligarh • T A U S Magazine. -

The colonial encounter is the foremost determinant for emerging literatures in English in India and the subcontinent. Additionally, the process through which the new nation comes into being; the trauma of partition, the formation of national identities in a situation of political instability all contribute to the vast body of literature, not just in English, but in the regional languages as well. My attempt in this introduction to a representative body of South Asian literature would be to show how literature refracts realities outside its domain and cannot. therefore, be stuched in isolation from them. In this course, you will study Bapsi Sidhwa's partition novel Ice Candy Man, which pulls together some of the issues mentioned above. -
Postcolonial Feminism and Pakistani Fiction
An Appraisal of the Aesthetic Dimension to the African Philosophy of Cloth 1 Postcolonial Feminism and Pakistani Fiction Zia Ahmed Abstract This paper aims to investigate the presence of feminism in Pakistani fiction in the postcolonial perspective and attempts to glocalize the feministic trends available in Pakistani fiction in terms of the wider scenario of feminism in the world. The women’s portrayal in Pakistani fiction shows a remarkable feministic tendency of the writers in accordance with the changing times in Indo-Pak subcontinent under the influence of British colonialism in India. The first change in the portrayal of women came because of the reformist agenda of the Indian Muslims and the second major development took place because of the Progressive Writers Movement, which provided a basis for the new images of women created by the modern Pakistani diaspora writers. Therefore, most of the issues discussed by the Pakistani writers of fiction can be discussed and analyzed with reference to the theory of postcolonial feminism. The paper deals with the differences between Western feminism and postcolonial feminism in the light of views of postcolonial critics regarding various aspects of postcolonial feminism. With reference to this discussion, an endeavor will be made to explore postcolonial feminist fiction to assess the role of fiction writers in representing the issues of women in the context of Pakistani political situation. Introduction Pakistani women have to struggle against their double colonization because of the particular politico-religious system which is hidden but working very actively behind the social system of Pakistan. It is very important to know that freedom from oppressive social system is not easy for the women of Pakistan even if they have achieved a certain level of education and economic independence. -

She has gone in to the psyche of Indian women who are always seen in the light of tradition, marriage boundaries or familial life. However, she has also created women characters that stand against these age old boundaries and dissent the traditional norms and take hold of their lives. To unravel the psyche of such women characters Ismat uses a language, deploys such narrative technique or places her Dr. SAFIA BEGUM characters in extra ordinary situations. Through it Ismat makes her characters bold and memorable.
