Budapest, February 2020 ________________________ Signature CEU eTD Collection Abstract Great Zimbabwe is one of Zimbabwe’s five World Heritage Sites inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1986. It is a premier heritage site in Zimbabwe, and remains the only archaeological site in the world to give its name to a country when Zimbabwe became independent from a century of British colonial rule. This thesis is the first to explore the sustainable management of the site focusing on the challenges and opportunities arising at the intersection of the country’s colonial history. It discusses the effects of the country’s socio- economic and environmental challenges, as well as ramifications of geopolitics on the management of Great Zimbabwe. Based on a framework of archival studies, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, questionnaires and my having an embodied knowledge of what it is like to be an African heritage professional, the purpose of this study is to construct an alternative approach to the future of managing African World Heritage Sites and Great Zimbabwe in particular. The thesis aims to contribute towards the deconstruction of the contemporary heritage discourse, which privileges notions of heritage born and matured in Europe. It enfolds the notion of heritage performance to champion the inclusion of local social beliefs and empowerment of local communities as a way of rethinking agency and collective action in the sustainable management and use of heritage. To illustrate this, the thesis proposes the hosting of an annual cultural festival at Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site, which has potential to make heritage experts, local communities, visitors and heritage performers, as well CEU eTD Collection as generate income for the site and the locals who are increasingly enduring poor harvests. i Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisors Dr Ashton Sinamai and Professor Alice Mathea Choyke for their patience and guidance during this long and difficult journey towards my MA degree. The period to be surveyed begins at about AD 700, as it is from about this time that we begin to have evidence of contacts between the region and areas beyond the African continent, and ends at about the twelfth century AD when large- scale political systems (states) began to emerge.     Reconstructing Swahili Foodways: The Archaeology of Fishing and Fish Consumption in Coastal East Africa, AD 500-1500 Eréndira Malinali Quintana Morales A dissertation submitted to the University of Bristol in accordance with the requirements of the degree of PhD in the Faculty of Arts Department of Archaeology and Anthropology October 2012 WC: 68,665 Quintana Morales Abstract This study investigates fishing and fish consumption throughout the development of Swahili settlements (AD 500 to 1500) along the East African coastline. Zooarchaeology provides an effective methodology to investigate how fish, as a principal food item, interlink culture and environment and shape life in these past coastal communities. I hypothesise that fishing and fish consumption practices are integrated parts of Swahili culture; thus, forms of fishing and fish consumption—and the material traces associated with them—reflect the cultural and environmental conditions of Swahili life at different scales. I consolidated published and unpublished reports of faunal remains from excavations on the Swahili coast and identified the faunal remains from two 14th to 16th century Swahili towns, Songo Mnara and Vumba Kuu, to explore subsistence practices at regional and local scales. These faunal data form the basis of analyses that explore trends such as changes in the relative proportions of the principal food items over time, the range of exploited marine habitats around settlements, and the distribution of differently-sized fish across a town. My interpretations of these patterns are aided by ethnoarchaeological observations and interdisciplinary perspectives from the fields of marine ecology, ethnography and paleo-climatic studies. The results indicate that the development of offshore fishing and an increasing consumption of domesticated bovids occur at particular settlements during a key period of growing urbanism and overseas trade in the Swahili region.

    Finding Their Place in the Swahili World: An Archaeological Exploration of Southern Tanzania Matthew Christopher Pawlowicz Richmond, Virginia MA, University of Virginia, 2007 BA, Yale University, 2004 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Phi losophy Department of Anthropology University of Virginia August 2011 i Abstract This dissertation studies the functioning of large-scale systems of interaction and exchange on the East African Swahili coast by exploring their influence in the region around the town of Mikindani in southern Tanzania over the past two millennia. Evidence of connections across those systems – to the Middle East, South Asia, China, and the Mediterranean – exists in the form of trade goods, cultural and religious similarities, and historical documents. Such connections have been thought crucial to the development of Swahili urban society, with coastal centers exploiting a middleman position in Indian Ocean trade to obtain socio-political prominence. I selected the Mikindani region as a place to evaluate such linkages because it provided an opportunity to investigate Swahili life away from major centers in more modest towns and villages akin to the majority of coastal settlements, extending the analysis beyond the elite traders to include regional participants with different forms of involvement. In pursuit of these subjects, data from archaeological survey and excavations in the Mikindani region are used to describe its communities’ socioeconomic organization and interregional connections. These data show that after sharing in many first- millennium coastal developments, Mikindani’s inhabitants did not participate in the Swahili florescence of the early second millennium CE and obtained none of the characteristic imported ceramics of the time.

Box 82412, Kenya, [email protected]/[email protected] This paper reports on the artefacts and environment of marine ballast and pottery sites identified through inter-tidal and underwater survey around Kilwa, Tanzania, one of the most important medieval sultanates along the east African coast. An inter-tidal site on the limestone fringing reef on the approaches to Kilwa Kisiwani Harbour and an underwater site within the harbour have been dated from associated pottery to c.8th–10th century and the 13th–16th century respectively. The presence of exotic basalt ballast is discussed as an indicator of wreck-sites. In this thesis beads recovered from southern African archaeological sites are organized into series, based on morphology and chemical composition determined by LA-ICP-MS analysis. The results are used to interpret the trade patterns and partners that linked eastern Africa to the rest of the Indian Ocean world, as well as interconnections between southern Africa andEast Africa. Comprehensive reports on bead assemblages from several archaeological sites are presented, including: Mapungubwe, K2 and Schroda in the Shashe-Limpopo Basin; Chibuene in southern Mozambique; Hlamba Mlonga in eastern Zimbabwe; Sibudu Cave in KwaZulu-Natal, Kaole Ruins in Tanzania and Mahilaka in northwest Madagascar. The conclusions reached show that trade relationships and socio-political development in the south were different from those on the East Coast and that changes in bead series in the south demonstrate it was fully integrated into the cycles of the Eurasian and African world-system.

Fuller Ó Springer Science+Business Media New York 2013 Abstract The Indian Ocean has long been a forum for contact, trade and the transfer of goods, technologies and ideas between geographically distant groups of people. Another, less studied, outcome of expanding maritime connectivity in the region is the translocation of a range of species of plants and animals, both domestic and wild. A significant number of these translocations can now be seen to involve Africa, either providing or receiving species, suggesting that Africa’s role in the emergence of an increasingly connected Indian Ocean world deserves more systematic consideration. While the earliest international contacts with the East African coast remain poorly understood, in part due to a paucity of archaeobotanical and zooarchaeological studies, some evidence for early African coastal activity is provided by the discovery of early hunter-gatherer sites on offshore islands, and, possibly, by the translocation of wild animals among these islands, and between them and the mainland. From the seventh century, however, clear evidence for participation in the Indian Ocean world emerges, in the form of a range of introduced species, including commensal and domestic animals, and agricultural crops. New genetic studies demonstrate that the flow of species to the coast is complex, with more than one source frequently indicated. The East African coast and Madagascar appear to have been significant centres of genetic admixture, drawing upon Southeast Asian, South Asian and Middle Eastern genetic varieties, and sometimes yielding unique hybrid species.

The Committee is requested to note that all nominations of properties to be examined by the 28th session of the Committee are included in the Tentative Lists of the respective States Parties. In order to provide the World Heritage Committee with a greater opportunity to review new additions to the Tentative Lists, this document is completed by 3 annexes: •= Annex 1 presents a full list of States Parties indicating the date of the most recent Tentative List submission. •= Annex 2 presents new Tentative Lists (or additions to Tentative Lists) submitted by States Parties since the last session of the Committee. •= Annex 3 presents a list of all properties submitted on Tentative Lists received from these States Parties, in English alphabetical order.
