Almost all are new discoveries and about 50% are YSOs. This provides further evidence that YSOs are the commonest high amplitude infrared variable stars in the Galactic plane. In the 2010-2014 time series of likely YSOs we find that the amplitude of variability increases towards younger evolutionary classes (class I and flat-spectrum sources) except on short timescales (<25 days) where this trend is reversed. -

It aims to fill a niche in the community for papers on any general topic in astronomy that may not find their place in top tier astronomical journals. The article outlines the thinking behind why there is a gap to be filled with regards to current scholarly metrics and the nature of other journals of similar scope and impact. The journal aims to be accessible to new and novice scientific authors, as well as those more established, through accessible developmental peer review and an explicit aim to avoid using publication metrics as a barrier to publication selection. The scope, which accepts more broader articles than most, of the journal and considerations on behalf of a potential author are also outlined. BYURAKAN ASTROPHYSICAL OBSERVATORY in 2010: ANNUAL REPORT Introduction In 2010 we had ups and downs in the Byurakan observatory. We would like to mention that a small group of students started very serious activities in modernization of 1m Schmidt camera. All the engineering works are completed and in a few months this telescope will be controllable after more than 20 years of its stoppage. Unfortunately during 2010 we could not begin the installation of the aluminization plant and the 2.6m telescope continued its work with the main mirror which desperately needs a renovated aluminum surface. Moreover the main telescope of the observatory needs a cardinal renewal of the control system as far as the elemental base is designed on the basis of the 60s of the last century, which should be substituted with new ones. This is one of the most important works to be done in the nearest future. As the most prominent event of the year 2010 for the BAO one should mention the third Byurakan International School for young astronomers organized jointly with the IAU. The Byurakan schools evidently became traditional and every year the number of applications increases. This is one of the most welcome tendencies we observed in 2010. In 2010 at last the book “Evolution of cosmic objects through their physical activity” was published presenting the proceedings of the international conference devoted to the 100th anniversary of Viktor Ambartsumian (Editors: H.A. Harutyunian, A.M. Mickaelian & Y. Terzian). Some international projects are initiated, which seems to be very promising but which slowed down and did not begin in the last year as we planned (especially the Italian-Armenian collaboration project). -

Open Infrastructure and Community: the Case of Astronomy
SPECIALISED PORTALS, ONLINE INFORMATION SERVICES, SCHOLARLY ONLINE NETWORKS: THE IMPACT OF E-INFRASTRUCTURES ON SCIENCE COMMUNICATION AND SCHOLARLY COMMUNITY BUILDING Open infrastructure and community: the case of astronomy Niels Taubert Abstract This comment focuses on an early case of an open infrastructure that emerged in the 1990s in international astronomy. It targets the reasons for this infrastructure’s tremendous success and starts with a few comments on the term ‘digital infrastructure’. Subsequently, it provides a brief description of the most important components of the infrastructure in astronomy. In a third step, the use of one component — the arXiv, an open access repository for manuscripts — is analyzed. It concludes with some considerations about the success and acceptance of this infrastructure in astronomy. In many cases it is highly questionable before or during its development whether the requirements of the targeted user group [Van Zundert, 2012] will be met, and when completed whether the extent of its utilization may stay behind the initial expectations [Kaltenbrunner, 2017, p. 303] often due to nebulous reasons. The aim of this comment is to approach at least some of the difficulties of the development of a digital infrastructure in science by drawing on a successful case: the digital infrastructure in international astronomy. In a first step, a heuristic model is given. It illustrates that the development of an infrastructure is not merely a technical task, but a creation of a complex arrangement that includes a two-sided social embedding of the technology. -

Zhou National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100012, China; [email protected] Abstract We present an up-to-date catalog of pulsating binaries, i.e. the binary and multiple stellar systems containing pulsating components, along with a statistics on them. Compared to the earlier compilation by Soydugan et al.(2006a) of 25 δ Scuti-type ‘oscillating Algol-type eclipsing binaries’ (oEA), the recent col- lection of 74 oEA by Liakos et al.(2012), and the collection of Cepheids in binaries by Szabados (2003a), the numbers and types of pulsating variables in binaries are now extended. The total numbers of pulsating binary/multiple stellar systems have increased to be 515 as of 2014 October 26, among which 262+ are oscillating eclipsing binaries and the oEA containing δ Scuti componentsare updated to be 96. The catalog is intended to be a collection of various pulsating binary stars across the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We reviewed the open questions, advances and prospects connecting pulsation/oscillation and binarity. The observational implication of binary systems with pulsating components, to stellar evolution theories is also addressed. In addition, we have searched the Simbad database for candidate pulsating binaries. As a result, 322 candidates were extracted. Furthermore, a brief statistics on Algol-type eclipsing binaries (EA) based on the existing catalogs is given. We got 5315 EA, of which there are 904 EA with spectral types A and F.
