Trophies, Relics and Curios? & Wingfield (eds) & Wingfield Knowles Jacobs, Trophies, Relics and Trophies, Curios? The British Missionary movement, which began in earnest in the early Trophies, Relics and Curios? Relics and Trophies, Relics and 19th century, was one of the most extraordinary movements of the last two centuries, radically transforming the lives of people in large parts of the globe, including in Europe itself. By exploring a range of artefacts, photographs and archival documents that Curios? have survived, or emerged from, these transformations, this volume sheds an oblique light on the histories of British Missionaries in Africa and the Pacific, and the ways in which their work is remembered in different parts of the Missionary Heritage from world today. Africa and the Pacific Short contributions describing the histories of particular items, accompanied by rich visual imagery, showcase the extraordinary l items that were caught up in histories of conversion, and are still controversial for many today. By focusing on the varied forms of missionary heritage, this volume aims to question the often used categories of trophies, relics or curios, and highlight the complexity involved in the missionary encounter. This volume is the result of a research networking project bringing together specialists of missionary collections, i.e. artefacts, photographs or archival documents. These specialists are academics of various disciplines, museum curators and indigenous stakeholders who aim to show to a wide audience what missionary heritage constitutes and how varied it is. The heritage in focus is based in museums, archives, churches and archaeological sites in Britain, the Pacific and Africa. Whatever one thinks about the desirability of this change, its significance, in global historical terms, is staggering. While there has been a recent profusion of independent and Pentecostal churches in these parts of the world, which have been the subject of a great deal of scholarly attention (eg. Anderson 2013; Miller, Sargeant and Flory 2013), it is undeniable that the roots of many African and Pacific churches lie in the protestant missionary movement which developed in Britain at the end of the eighteenth century, and took advantage of the opportunities offered by an expanding empire (Cox 2008). By concentrating on a range of artefacts, material things made by humans, which have survived from the British Protestant missionary movement over the last two centuries, this book attempts to cast light on the multiple historical events and exchanges which together made up this movement. At one level, the artefacts, whether museum collections, memorials or historic churches, themselves constitute missionary heritage – they have been inherited from a past to which missionary endeavour contributed considerably. At another level, however, heritage is less about the things themselves, and more about how we deal with them and negotiate their significance in the present. Through focussing on a diverse range of artefacts, this book aims to draw out these questions of significance, and explore the different ways in which artefacts with origins in the missionary past may be important for different communities in the present. These groups include contemporary Christians in Africa and the Pacific, people from these parts of the world living in Europe, but also Europeans themselves. While mission histories loom large in shaping both landscapes and identities in much of sub-Saharan Africa and the Pacific, where the architectural remains of early missions are frequently recognised as significant heritage sites, they are more easily forgotten in Europe. In Britain, apart from a small number of memorials and blue plaques on buildings associated with famous British missionaries (most notably Figure 1. Courtesy of Chris Wingfield. introduction 9 David Livingstone), the most significant material reminders of overseas missionary activity are collections of portable material, brought and sent back to Britain by missionaries. Many are kept today in small and large museums across the British Isles. It is fair to say that in many cases their connection to the British missionary movement is often unknown and largely unacknowledged. In larger collections, such as those of the British Museum or the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, many of these artefacts are presented primarily as ethnographic specimens, examples of things made in Africa or the Pacific, without significant acknowledgement of the complex histories of religious conversion and encounter from which they originate. Reassessing the significance of these objects in the light of these histories, however, means considering a period before the category of ethnographic object was in widespread use (see Kirshenblatt-Gimblett 1991). The terms more usually applied to such artefacts when they arrived in Britain were those used in the title of this book: trophies, relics and curios. One example of this usage comes from a pamphlet produced in 1908 to introduce The Orient in London, the largest missionary exhibition ever organised by the London Missionary Society (LMS), at London’s Agricultural Hall, at the time one of the largest exhibition spaces in the world: Innumerable courts are furnished with curios and trophies, with treasures rich and rare, telling here of a martyr missionary’s last bold venture, there of an intrepid explorer’s plunge into some land where white men’s feet had never trod, and on every side objects illustrating the emergence by barbarous nations from the habits and customs of darkness into the splendours of a civilisation

ABSTRACT In this contextual study I investigate why and how the traditional approach to mission, engaged by Anglican missionaries, gave rise to a dual observance of ritual among Shona Anglican Christians. I begin by establishing the significance and essence of Shona views of death and the dead, then investigate the missionaries' historical background. I highlight that Christian arrogance, in the guise of racial superiority, underlies the confrontational and condemnatory approach. Traditional views were considered evil, in their place, Shona converts were forced to adopt western Christian views as the only acceptable and valid way of coping with this eschatological reality. These views did not usually fit the Shona worldviews and religious outlook, hence the adoption of dual observance.

    Oxford Centre for Christianity and Culture, Centre for Baptist History and Heritage and Baptist Historical Society The heritage of Serampore College and the future of mission From the Enlightenment to modern missions: how the vision of the Serampore Quartet has come full circle John R Hudson 20 October 2018 The vision of the Serampore Quartet was an eighteenth century Enlightenment vision involving openness to ideas and respect for others and based on the idea that, for full understanding, you need to study both the ‘book of nature’ and the ‘book of God.’ Serampore College was a key component in the working out of this wider vision. This vision was superseded in Britain by the racist view that European civilisa- tion is superior and that Christianity is the means to bring civilisation to native peoples. This view had appalling consequences for native peoples across the Empire and, though some Christians challenged it, only in the second half of the twentieth century did Christians begin to embrace a vision more respectful of non-European cultures and to return to a view of the relationship between missionaries and native peoples more akin to that adopted by the Serampore Quartet. 1 Introduction Serampore College was not set up in 1818 as a theological college though ministerial training was to be part of its work (Carey et al., 1819); nor was it a major part, though it remains the most visible legacy of, the work of the Serampore Quartet.1 Rather it came as an outgrowth of the wider vision of the Serampore Quartet — a wider vision which, I will argue, arose from the eighteenth century Enlightenment and which has been rediscovered as the basis for mission in the second half of the twentieth century.

The review scoped the extent of Pacific collections in Scotland and identified key strengths and resources for future research. It also compiled Collections Level Descriptions for each regional island group and to highlight significance. The review was undertaken as a partnership across four museums in Scotland with significant or extensive collections from the Pacific region. These partners were National Museums Scotland (Edinburgh); Glasgow Museums; Perth Museum and Art Gallery and Aberdeen University Museums. Each of these museums hold collections from Vanuatu that have clear associations with islands or regions in Vanuatu and relate to well known Scottish missionaries. How to use this finding aid This finding aid provides an overview of Ni-Vanuatu artefact collections in Scotland and where possible related archives or photographs. The following list provides the names of key individuals through which the collections were acquired. The finding aid enables an initial overview of collections and resources and provides contact details for each of the major museums and libraries so that requests for further information can be made. The finding aid should also be used in conjunction with Excel spreadsheets and photographs of artefacts also deposited with the National Archives of Vanuatu.

    5. “We are Kai Tonga” The islands of Moala, Totoya and Matuku, collectively known as the Yasayasa Moala, lie between 100 and 130 kilometres south-east of Viti Levu and approximately the same distance south-west of Lakeba. While, during the nineteenth century, the three islands owed some allegiance to Bau, there existed also several family connections with Lakeba. The most prominent of the few practising Christians there was Donumailulu, or Donu who, after lotuing while living on Lakeba, brought the faith to Moala when he returned there in 1852.1 Because of his conversion, Donu was soon forced to leave the island’s principal village, Navucunimasi, now known as Naroi. He took refuge in the village of Vunuku where, with the aid of a Tongan teacher, he introduced Christianity.2 Donu’s home island and its two nearest neighbours were to be the scene of Ma`afu’s first military adventures, ostensibly undertaken in the cause of the lotu. Richard Lyth, still working on Lakeba, paid a pastoral visit to the Yasayasa Moala in October 1852. Despite the precarious state of Christianity on Moala itself, Lyth departed in optimistic mood, largely because of his confidence in Donu, “a very steady consistent man”.3 He observed that two young Moalan chiefs “who really ruled the land, remained determined haters of the truth”.4 On Matuku, which he also visited, all villages had accepted the lotu except the principal one, Dawaleka, to which Tui Nayau was vasu.5 The missionary’s qualified optimism was shattered in November when news reached Lakeba of an attack on Vunuku by the two chiefs opposed to the lotu.

    Imagining the Missionary Hero: Juvenile Missionary Biographies, c. 1870-1917 ‘Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Julie Anne McColl.’ December 2017 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the fascinating and complex body of work surrounding the missionary hero as a product of late imperial ideas of the heroic produced in the form of biography. It will concentrate upon how the literature was appropriated, reproduced and disseminated via the Sunday school network to working-class children between 1870 and 1917. It will discuss how biographers through imaginative narrative strategies and the reframing of the biography as an adventure story, were able to offer children a physical exemplar and self-sacrificial hero who dispensed clear imperial ideas and moral values. This thesis will reflect upon how the narratives embedded in dominant discourses provided working-class children with imperial ideologies including ideas of citizenship and self-help which it will argue allowed groups of Sunday school readers to feel part of an imagined community. In doing so, the thesis sheds important new light on a central point of contention in the considerable and often heated discussion that has developed since the 1980s around the impact of empire on British people.Through an analysis of common themes it will also consider the depiction of women missionaries, asking whether biographical representation challenged or reinforced traditional gender ideologies. To interrogate these components effectively this thesis is divided into two parts, Part One is divided into five chapters providing context, while Part Two will look in detail at the repetition and adaption of common themes.
