NEWS Contact: Janet Crystal Wilton Library Phone: (203) 762-3950 Ext. 226 Fax: (203) 834-1166 E-mail: [email protected] February 19, 2015 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jazz Guitarist Julian Lage at Wilton Library March 7 Wilton, CT – American jazz composer and guitarist Julian Lage performs in Wilton Library’s Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room concert on Saturday, March 7, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Often categorized as a jazz musician, his music is rooted in both traditional and acoustic forms. A child prodigy, Lage was the subject of a 1997 documentary, “Jules at Eight” and at age 13 performed at the 2000 Grammy Awards. Although asked often, he held off creating his own albums, performing instead as a sideman with others, including Hot & Cool performers Taylor Eigsti, Fred Hersch and Dayna Stephens. In 2009, Julian released his debut album, Sounding Point, which was nominated for the 2010 Grammy Award Best Contemporary Jazz Album. He has since created two more albums as a leader; the most recent is World’s Fair, a solo acoustic guitar project, which released this month. He has four albums to his credit as a co-leader with Chris Eldridge and others. In addition to his own quintet, he has recorded with with Gary Burton, David Grisman, Eric Harland, Anthony Wilson, Martin Taylor, Joshua Bell and Yoko Ono. Lage has played professionally with renowned artists such as Jim Hall, Mark O'Connor, Ambrose Akinmusire, Walter Smith III, Larry Grenadier, Béla Fleck, Antonio Sanchez, and Nels Cline, among others. His most recent duo album, “Free Flying” with Fred Hersch received a coveted 5 star review in Down Beat magazine. He classically trained at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, studied at Sonoma State University, Ali Akbar College of Music and graduated from the Berklee College of Music in 2008. He has been a faculty member at the Stanford Jazz Workshop at Stanford University since age 15. Formerly from the San Francisco Bay Area and having spent time in Boston, he now calls New York City home. Pobozhiy then joined the evening's honoree, Terence Blanchard, and a host of jazz guitar legends onstage for a dazzling performance of Wes Montgomery's "Four On Six." Presented by the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, the world’s preeminent jazz education organization, the Competition awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships and prizes, including a $30,000 scholarship and a guaranteed recording contract with Concord Records for the first-place winner. Internationally acclaimed guitarists Stanley Jordan, Lionel Loueke, Russell Malone, Pat Metheny, Chico Pinheiro, Lee Ritenour and John Scofield served as the Competition judges. The December 3rd event at the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater featured a star-studded Gala Concert with the presentation of the Institute's Maria Fisher Founder's Award to multi-GRAMMY Award-winning trumpeter, composer and educator Terence Blanchard. The evening featured stellar performances by a diverse group of all-stars including Musical Director John Beasley, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Keith David, Antonio Hart, Jane Monheit, Cassandra Wilson and Lizz Wright. They were joined onstage by many of Blanchard's former Institute students, among them Billy Buss, Alan Hampton, Lionel Loueke, Gretchen Parlato, Walter Smith III and Dayna Stephens.

Media support for the 13/14 Jazz Series provided by WRTI and City Paper. 10 | ABOUT THE ARTISTS Gary Burton (Vibraphone) Born in 1943 and raised in Indiana, Gary Burton taught himself to play the vibraphone. At the age of 17, Burton made his recording debut in Nashville with guitarists Hank Garland and Chet Atkins. Two years later, Burton left his studies at Berklee College of Music to join George Shearing and Stan Getz, with whom he worked from 1964 to 1966. As a member of Getz's quartet, Burton won Down Beat Magazine's “Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition” award in 1965. By the time he left Getz to form his own quartet in 1967, Burton had recorded three solo albums. Borrowing rhythms and sonorities from rock music, while maintaining jazz's emphasis on improvisation and harmonic complexity, Burton's first quartet attracted large audiences from both sides of the jazz-rock spectrum. Such albums as Duster and Lofty Fake Anagram established Burton and his band as progenitors of the jazz fusion phenomenon.

This summer’s stellar lineup features a must-see mix of the finest jazz artists in the world, performing in the intimate and easily accessible South Bay setting of the Stanford University campus. Tickets will go on sale on May 1. JULIAN LAGE ARCLIGHT Arclight, Julian Lage’s Mack Avenue debut, marks his first recorded outing on electric guitar and in a trio format, backed by double bassist Scott Colley and drummer Kenny Wollesen. Like that titular intense white light, Lage is a performer who burns brightly: The pace he sets is brisk, the mood often upbeat, the playing so quick-witted and offhandedly dazzling that one is compelled to immediately press “repeat,” especially when tracks like “Persian Rug” and “Activate” whiz by in under two and a half minutes. For a thoughtful artist like Lage, who will research and ruminate on a project long before he sets foot in a studio, this was a liberating experience, plugging in and playing with a kind of abandon. He was encouraged along the way by his producer and friend, the eclectic singer-songwriter Jesse Harris, who helped maintain an air of spontaneity and discovery throughout the trio’s three-day stint at Brooklyn Recording. Lage has long been heralded for his virtuosic ability as an acoustic guitarist. In fact, he was well known in musician circles as a guitar prodigy whose early genius was captured in a 1997 Oscar-nominated documentary short, Jules At Eight. As an adult, he’s fulfilled the promise of his extraordinary youthful talent. The New Yorker’s Alec Wilkinson declared, “He is in the highest category of improvising musicians, those who can enact thoughts and impulses as they receive them.” Nate Chinen of The New York Times called Lage “one of jazz’s breezier virtuosos, possessed of an unflappable technical facility and a seemingly boundless curiosity.” After independently releasing a solo acoustic set of largely original material called World’s Fair in 2014, that curiosity prompted Lage to reconsider the electric guitar— specifically a Fender Telecaster, “the most refined embodiment of the modern guitar,” as he puts it.

THE GARY BURTON QUARTET Ein ziemlich populärer Satz der letzten Jahre lautete „mit 60 beginnt das Leben“. Gary Burton allerdings hat, wie schon so oft in seiner Karriere, dem Buch zum Lebensabend gleich noch ein Kapitel hinzu gefügt. Im Januar feierte er seinen 71. Geburtstag - ein Alter, das die meisten Künstler schon mit der Rückschau auf ihr Schaffen verbringen. Burton hingegen schaute in die Zukunft und festigte zugleich mit seinem letzten Album „Guided Tour“ die Reputation seiner neuen, großen Band, des New Gary Burton Quartet. Über das was war hat er dann lieber ein Buch geschrieben: Im September 2013 erschien mit „Learning To Listen“ seine Autobiographie. Als Executive Vice President des renommierten Berklee College of Music sah man ihn drei Jahrzehnte lang als Jazz-Erzieher, während parallel dazu seine Karriere als Performer und Recording Artist auch nicht eben in ruhigen Bahnen verlief. Berühmt für die Wiederentdeckung und Verfeinerung der Vier-Klöppel-Technik am Vibraphon, gelang ihm zudem die Erschaffung seines eigenen, ganz unverkennbaren Sounds. Nebenher etablierte der Amerikaner an seinem College die ersten Onlinekurse auf der Plattform Coursera, der bereits zwei Monate vor ihrem offiziellen Start 25.000 Studenten angehörten. Auf „Guided Tour“ nun bewies der innovativste Vibraphonist des Jazz, das sein New Gary Burton Quartett kein Zirkuspferd ist, das nur einen Trick beherrscht.
