MKPWC 15 DRIVERFEATURE Incredible Week Makes Daniel Morad a PWC SprintX Winner and Favorite Coming to CTMP Home Track

Canadian Enters VIR race late but leaves with an impressive performance

Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada – Canadian racer Daniel Morad’s life took an interesting turn two weeks ago when he received a phone call from Nick Short of CRP Racing, a Pirelli World Challenge racing team based in Charlotte, N.C. The former open-wheel star had been seeking to raise his racing career to the next level when everything came to screeching halt. After competing in the European GP3 in 2011, Morad was left without ride. The personable sports car racer was wandering racing paddock areas in North America looking for a ride while being a racing coach and assisting with corporate driving activities. “I’ll admit that time off left me thinking a lot about my racing career,” said Morad, who’ll return to his hometown track of Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on May 19-21 for the next SprintX weekend of the Pirelli World Challenge. “Luckily I was offered a ride and things started looking up. I was getting calls.” After a difficult time getting to his current sports car status, the 27-year-old driver from Markham, Ont., Canada, then won the 2016 Porsche Cup in North America and Canada and subsequently captured his class in the prestigious Rolex 24 at Daytona in January of this year. Morad’s wild ride on his path to the VIRginia International Raceway for the season-opening PWC SprintX weekend gave him confidence and he put in a brilliant performance against some of the world’s best factory sports car drivers. “Nick called me on the Friday before the VIR race week and offered me the ride with Ryan Dalziel in the No. 2 CRP Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3,” Daniel explained. “I was excited for the call. But things got crazy that next week. Nick asked me to come to Charlotte to look at the Mercedes and get fitted for the seat on Monday, which was my 27th birthday. So, I signed the contract and then Nick said they needed me to do a live TV show in Charlotte Tuesday with the race car too. It was funny. 16 PWCMK DRIVERFEATURE

MKPWC 17 DRIVERFEATURE Little-known Daniel Mancinelli Impresses With Performances in First Five PWC Events

Italian newcomer has won a GT pole and a SprintX GT race already this year

Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada – Young Daniel Mancinelli was so unknown at the Pirelli World Challenge season opener at the streets of St. Petersburg that the Italian driver didn’t have a driver rating for the GT class.

In fact, Mancinelli, the 28-year-old, 5-foot-3 driver from San Severino, Italy, was listed in the amateur class initially with his No. 31 TR3 Racing/The Collection Ferrari 488 GT3 in the first round of practice last March at St. Petersburg.

Then Mancinelli won the overall pole position for the 50-minute GT Sprint race on Saturday. The PWC officials looked deeper into Daniel’s racing past and found the former karting and open-wheel racing champion had been winning GT races in his native Italy and throughout Europe.

Mancinelli was reclassified into the PWC pro ranks shortly after.

“This is a good track for the Ferrari and I love America right now,” said Mancinelli following his GT pole. “Last year, I raced just two races in the Ferrari Challenge in the U.S. Those are my only American races before. I have raced the Ferrari Challenge in Europe as well as the Italian GT series. I drove a McLaren in the GT championship two years ago and last year I drove a Ferrari. I started in karting in Italy and then drove in open- wheel cars and Formula Three before moving into sports cars in 2012.“

The brief history lesson in his sports car experience helped better explain his unexpected P1 qualification that day. And the personable Italian hasn’t disappointed since that St. Petersburg pole.
