THE LANYONS OF LANYON, MADRON AN INCIDENT IN THE FAMILY HISTORY N the fourteenth century there dwelt in the Manor House of Trega- I minion a family bearing that name. This house was some four miles from Lanyon Manor. Joyce Tregaminion and his wife Joan had three children, Richard, the only son and heir, and two daughters named Sibyl and Isabel. The latter married John Robyn als. Luky, said to be a "bond tenant to the Princess of Wales" and this act—"the marital subordination of a free woman to an unfree husband"—resulted in later years in the loss to the family of much of their estates. But that is another story. Sibyl married a John de Lynyen of Lanyon Manor, and either at the end of the year 1344 or beginning of 1345 she visited her old home. As the word "late" is used in speaking of her mother, Joan, she might have just died. When returning to Lanyon Manor, and for some reason we are not given, Sibyl took "some goods and jewels" of her mother's and "carried" them away to her home. It may be that Sibyl's husband, John, knew nothing of bis wife's wrong conduct until she was charged with this felony—by whom we are not told—but, whether ignorantly or knowingly, be was bound by both love and chivalry to give her his protection and the shelter of his home (though the law deemed him an "accessory to a felony") and to face the penalty of his lands becoming forfeit, and he himself outlawed, should the Courts' verdict go against him. -

Post of Gallery Manager – Penwith Gallery, St Ives The Penwith Society of Arts was founded in 1949 by a group of artists in St. Ives, under the distinguished leadership of Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Bernard Leach; it now has a unique complex of buildings in Back Road West, including public galleries, artists’ studios and workshops. A charitable company – Penwith Galleries Ltd – was created to arrange the programme of exhibitions, execute all gallery business and manage the entire complex. The galleries present year-round exhibitions by Members and Associates of the society, as well as exhibitions by other artists from Cornwall and artists from further afield. The New Gallery and the Studio Gallery are available for hire when our programme permits. The Penwith is an unrivalled resource for the arts in Cornwall and is part of a unique cluster of visual arts activity in the town, working with other partners such as Tate St Ives, Porthmeor Studios, the St Ives School of Painting, the St Ives Archive and a range of other galleries. Gallery Manager Penwith Galleries Ltd (PGL) is now recruiting for the new post of full-time Gallery Manager. We expect that she or he will be an experienced administrator with a real interest in and enthusiasm for art as well as experience in finance, marketing and sales. The new Manager should demonstrate the ability to oversee effectively our gallery operations and our employees. Applicants must have the management skills to control the gallery’s budget, manage and schedule the gallery staff, plan gallery schedules, set deadlines and so on. -

It is structure in textures of colour.’ His ‘monuments’, whether oil paintings, pen and wash drawings, or oil sketches on paper, have varied essentially between two kinds of structure. There is the structure built up of clearly defined, tightly bounded forms of the early geometrical-constructivist work; and there is, in contrast, the flowing, richly textured forms of his later period, so characteristic of Bomberg’s landscape painting. These distinctions seem to exist even in the palette: primary colours and heavily saturated hues in the early works, while the later paintings are more subtle, tonally conceived surfaces. -

The Ellis Breweries at Helston and Hayle

Brewery at Helston built and, by the mid to late nineteenth century, were known simply as the ‘Helston Brewery’ and the ‘Hayle Breweries and malthouses at Helston Brewery’; they were two of an estimated ten large scale independent breweries operating in Cornwall by 1877. -

1 Searching for Pure Form: Terry Frost, Madrigal (1949) Matthew Rampley Collection: Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum This article explores the place of Terry Frost’s painting Madrigal (Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum) in his career, and its relation to abstract painting elsewhere in post- war Britain and beyond. Keywords: Terry Frost, abstract, modernism, post-war, British Madrigal (fig.1) is one of three paintings by Terry Frost in the collections of Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum, the other two being Orange Umber (1960) (fig.2) and Orange and Blue (1963) (fig.3). Frost (1915–2003) was one of the most prominent painters and printmakers working in post-war Britain, and his work was typified by his use of large juxtaposed blocks of colour, sometimes in harmonious arrangements but sometimes, too, in awkward contrasts that created various effects of tension. Frost was a leading representative of the generation of British abstract painters who came to artistic maturity in the 1960s and were associated with the artists’ colony in St. Ives, including Patrick Heron (1920–99), Peter Lanyon (1918–1964) and Roger Hilton (1911–75). Frost was a latecomer to art. Born in Leamington Spa, he attended occasional art classes as a teenager, but it was not until he was in his late 20s and a prisoner-of-war in Germany that he took to it more seriously, influenced by his fellow prisoner, the painter Adrian Heath (1920–1992). After the Second World War he studied in St. Ives and then in London at Camberwell School of Art, under William Coldstream (1907–87) and Victor Pasmore (1908– 1998).
