2021 PORTFOLIO CANADA - BRITISH COLUMBIA Kettle Valley Winery | Naramata, Okanagan Valley | www.kettlevalleywinery.com Drawing its name from the Kettle Valley Railway, which traveled through the Naramata area on the east side of Okanagan Lake, the winery opened to the public in 1996. Kettle Valley Winery is known for it’s dark, intense and well structured red wines, including Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and blends such as “Old Main Red”. Chardonnay has been the main white wine produced, but in recent years Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc have also proved popular. Since climatic conditions are similar to those of Bordeaux in France, it is not surprising that this region produces some of the best wines made in Australia. The name Alkoomi is taken from local aboriginal dialect and means ‘a place we choose’. In our tribute to James Halliday, the true patron of fine Australian wine, no other variety would do for this national wine competition. Organised by Wine Yarra Valley, the objective of the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge is to affirm the quality of Australian Chardonnay and provide a catalyst for people to take a fresh look at this much-loved wine by providing an appropriate platform for the national search to recognize Australia’s finest chardonnay. A Welcome from the Committee Australian chardonnay has never been better. It is a great news story and one about which we should all be proud and excited. The level of support for the inaugural James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge has been overwhelming and we thank all of the exhibitors for getting behind it so enthusiastically. We thank James for his guidance and support in the design and execution of the competition and agreeing to be our patron. We were very lucky to be able to secure one of the most dynamic and talented groups of judges in Australia, literally from coast-to-coast, and thank them for volunteering their time, expertise and camaraderie.

Some of the region’s best wines, including Alkoomi, Eastwell Estate, Forest Hill, West Cape Howe and Xabregas, were showcased to more than 300 wine delegates in Shanghai and Beijing during the Two City Tour, initiated and Alkoomi Wines director Sandy Hallett coordinated by the Great Southern presents the company’s wines at the Development Commission (GSDC) with Shanghai tasting event. the assistance of the Western Australian Trade Office. The scholarship will provide financial assistance for up to two years to a student undertaking tertiary study in a wine related discipline to help support their career in the wine industry. Please note applicants must have already successfully completed at least one year of the relevant course.
