The Season of Advent

Next week is the first Sunday of Advent. The Season of Advent is a time of preparation and waiting. Prayer allows the true meaning of Christmas to shine forth. We prepare our hearts in order to experience the full joy of the season. If you want to have a truly wonderful Advent, it is important to take the time to pray. We live in a society that moves at a very rapid pace. Many people do not know how to slow down and reflect on what is happening around them. The weeks before Christmas can be a hectic time. The shopping, the wrapping of gifts, the sending of cards, the parties — all these things can distract us from focusing on the birth of the Christ Child. We must make a concentrated effort to keep Christ in Christmas. If you find yourself stressed during the season, please take a deep breath and remember that Jesus is the true reason for the season.

Our current society does not value preparation and waiting. We live in a world of instant coffee, microwave dinners, cell phones, and many other time saving devices. People spend a lot of money on items that minimize preparation and waiting. The Season of Advent goes against the current attitude in our society. I like to compare the season of Advent to baking bread. When a person bakes bread, they have to prepare the ingredients first. The proper ingredients, measured to the proper amount, must be mixed together first before the bread can be baked. When all is ready, it is crucial to allow the proper time for the bread to bake. For example, if you are baking bread, and you only let it cook in the oven for one minute, you will be eating slightly warm dough when you take it out of the oven. The waiting time is important and cannot be ignored.

Let us take time to prepare for the wonderful Season of Advent. Perhaps you can spend some extra time in church on Mondays during Adoration of the Blessed , or, you can make use of the sacrament of Reconciliation to prepare yourself spiritually for the coming of the Christ Child. Advent is a special season. Let us take time to appreciate what it truly means.

Yours in Christ,

SOCIAL CONCERNS MINISTRY GIFT PROGRAM

We are running our annual Christmas Gift Program for the children of Our Lady of Mercy Parish. This year we’ve been given the names of over 400 children. In past years, thanks to the generosity of the members of the St. Eugene community, we’ve been able to provide a gift for every child in the Christmas Gift Program. We are hoping that the members of the St. Eugene community will once again help us to provide a gift for each of the 425 children. The suggested gift amount is $15.00 - $20.00.

Our members will be in the vestibule of the church with the children’s names before and after Masses the weekend of December 2 - 3. All gifts should be wrapped & returned to church the weekend of December 16 - 17.

Remember the gifts must be returned by 11:00 am on December 17.

Our members want to thank everyone for bringing a little joy into the lives of these children this Christmas season. Page Six St. Eugene Parish Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 26, 2017 St. Eugene Parish Page Seven

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today we have a modern feast, less than a century old, and placed at the very end of the liturgical cycle of Sundays only in 1969. In 1925, the world was in a sorry state from the vantage point of Pope Pius XI. The winds of war had swept the map of raw, and ancient Christian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recognition of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today’s world as well. In 1969 it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfection of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the , the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others. —Rev.
