chapter 2 Orthodox Church Life A. Church Etiquette The Church is the earthly heaven in which the heavenly God dwells and moves. An Orthodox Church is that part of God’s creation which has been set apart and “reclaimed” for the Kingdom of God. Within its walls, the heavenly and earthly realms meet, outside time, in the acts of worship and Sacrifice offered there to God. Angels assist the Priest during the Divine Liturgy, and Saints and members of the Church Triumphant participate in the Ser- vices. The Blessed Theotokos, the Mother of God, is also present and, of course, our Lord Jesus Christ is invisibly present wher- ever two or three gather in His Name, just as He is always present in the reserved Eucharist preserved on the Holy Table of most Orthodox Churches. Given these very significant spiritual realities, we should al- ways approach an Orthodox Church with the deepest attitude of reverence. Even when passing an Orthodox Church on foot or in a car, we always cross ourselves out of respect for the presence of God therein. It is, indeed, unthinkable that we should ever pass in front of an Orthodox Church without showing such rev- erence. Therefore, it is obvious that we must approach our meeting with the heavenly realm during Divine Services with careful and proper preparation. When preparing for Church, we should always dress as we would for a visit to an important dignitary. After all, we are about to enter into the very presence of God. SAINT LUKE THE EVANGELIST GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH august 21, 2016 THE ninth sunday of matthew Saint Thaddeus, Apostle of the Seventy, was by descent a Hebrew, and he was born in the Syrian city of Edessa. The holy Apostle Thaddeus of the Seventy must be distinguished from St Jude, also called Thaddeus or Levi (June 19), who was one of the Twelve Apostles. When he came to Jerusalem for a feastday, he heard the preaching of John the Forerunner. After being baptized by him in the Jordan, he remained in Palestine. He saw the Savior, and became His follower. He was chosen by the Lord to be one of the Seventy Disciples, whom He sent by twos to preach in the cities and places where He intended to visit (Luke. 10: 1). After the Ascension of the Savior to Heaven, St Thaddeus preached the good news in Syria and Mesopota- mia. He came preaching the Gospel to Edessa and he converted King Abgar, the people and the pagan priests to Christ. He backed up his preaching with many miracles (about which Abgar wrote to the Assyrian emperor Nerses). He established priests there and built up the Edessa Church. Prince Abgar wanted to reward St Thaddeus with rich gifts, but he refused and went preaching to other cities, converting many pagans to the Christian Faith. He went to the city of Beirut to preach, and he founded a church there. It was in this city that he peacefully died in the year 44. The Martyr Bassa with her sons Theognis, Agapius and Pistus, lived in the city of Macedonian Edessa and she was married to a pagan priest. -

New Anthology Hungry Orthodox Christian Reader: The “Hidden” Writings of Orthodox Christianity Description Many Orthodox writings currently available in English seem to be “hidden”: by the haze of academia, crossing of jurisdictional lines, and just plain unfamiliarity. This Reader is a sampler of and introduction to various texts, types of writings, and their sources for Orthodox people who want to know more about Orthodoxy but may not know where to look. The individual articles focus less on what we believe and more on how we believe, a foundational difference between East and West. Many of the articles in this anthology are from multi-volume sets of books that an individual would naturally hesitate to purchase: because of their cost, the mystery of their contents, or the trepidation engendered by their bulk. Even if these multi-volume sets are available in the church library, their enormous size is daunting and discourages perusal. They are easily assumed to be for scholars, even though they contain normal, everyday, Orthodox reading. This anthology gives an encouraging glimpse into their contents. Another highlighted source is monastic periodicals, which are generally unknown but would be helpful for any Orthodox reader. Some selections are from service books, sadly considered to be the domain of clergy, but potentially edifying for the laity: demystifying the services (“What are they saying?”) can engage the congregation and unveil the Mystery’s majesty. Still other readings are from types of writings (e.g., homilies) that one might not think to investigate (“those are for priests”), and from authors whose very names are intimidating (“St Gregory Palamas is too scholarly, it would be completely over my head”). -

The Seminary is located in the town of Etna, in the moun- tains of Northern California, approximately one hour south of the Oregon border.
