5. SIGHTSEEING AND TOURIST INFORMATION The Sedetani, a tribe of ancient Iberians, populated a village called Salduie (Salduba in Roman sources). Later on, Augustus founded a city called Caesaraugusta at the same location to settle army veterans from the Cantabrian wars. The foundation date of Caesaraugusta has not been set with exact precision, though it is known to lie between 25 BC and 12 BC. The city did not suffer any decline during the last centuries of the Roman empire and was captured peacefully by the Goths in the fifth century AD. Zaragoza has a great cultural wealth thanks to its historical past. The city, which was founded by the Romans, also offers reminiscences of its Arab and Jewish past. Strolling through the centre of Zaragoza is a time travel experience in which you can enjoy these three cultures. Zaragoza Turismo has selected these sites of interest for visitors to the city. These are the top five: The Basílica del Pilar is the symbol of the city par excellence. Tradition holds that the Virgin Mary came to Zaragoza to the Apostle Saint James (Santiago), who was preaching on the banks of the Ebro, to console him. The Virgin gave him a jasper column as a symbol of the strength that he should demonstrate in his faith. Inside, you will find an image of the Virgin resting on a Pillar (Pilar), the jasper column she is said to have given to the Apostle. It has been a Roman temple, Visigoth church, Mosque and finally a Cathedral, and thus bears witness to a range of contrasting artistic styles: Romanesque, Mudéjar, Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque. Also known as La Seo Cathedral, particularly remarkable features include the Mudéjar wall of the parish, the Baroque tower and the Neoclassical façade.

The beautifully restored Palacio de la Aljafería rises up majestically near Zaragoza-Delicias Station. During the guided tour, you can learn about the importance of the palace under the rule of the taifas and subsequently as the residence of the Reyes Católicos.

Moreover, this singular building will continue to exist in all of its splendour, since it is currently home to the Aragonese Parliament.

Zaragoza, an important centre in Roman Hispania, conserves interesting archaeological remains that bear witness to the city`s prosperity at the time: - Forum Museum. - River Port Museum. - Public Baths Museum. - Caesaraugusta Theatre Museum.

Francisco Goya was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker who was born in (Zaragoza). He is considered the most important Spanish artist of late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout his long career was a commentator and chronicler of his era. 8

It is possible to visit his work at Basílica del Pilar, Zaragoza Museum, Goya Museum - Colección Ibercaja and La Cartuja de Aula Dei.
