DEAN’S MESSAGE It’s hard to believe the fall semester is just around the corner. All of us at the College of Business are looking forward to working with students, faculty and staff during the upcoming year. In the meantime, there is a lot of good news to report from over the summer. As I have discussed many times, private gift giving is essential to creating a premier College of Business. I want to highlight a few gifts to demonstrate the impact that philanthropy can have on our programs. For example, last month, we received a very generous gift from Neill‐TSP to create the Neill‐TSP Fund for Excellence in Sales. Among other things, this support enables us to offer our Professional Sales students invaluable internships with the company and for our faculty to share research with Neill‐TSP. (More on this below.) Corporate gifts like this one – as well as support from foundations and individuals – allow us to add new programs, enhance the quality of our existing programs, make higher education accessible to students who otherwise could not afford to attend, and help us attract and retain world‐class faculty. Also, remember that alumni annual giving rates are one of the factors on which U.S. News & World Report bases its national rankings of universities. Because of past private support, we were able to create and expand The Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship at the College of Business. These gifts have been transformative as we continue to foster the spirit of entrepreneurship across campus and empower students to become entrepreneurs. Further, last year’s significant gift from alumnus Dr. William T. Hold and his organization, The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research, helped the university launch “The Risk Initiative,” a campaign establishing FSU as a national leader in a number of academic fields that involve risk. Alumnus Bob Sasser and his wife Pam, kicked off our building campaign with a $1 million gift, which they hope will inspire others to invest in the new building. It inspired Parrish Owens, a 2008 graduate, to give a gift that will go toward building a 100‐seat auditorium and alumnus Steve Leonard gave a gift that will recreate the Stephen C. Leonard Sales Laboratory. Both of these gifts are designated for the new building. This is just a teaser and we will be detailing several other large and small gifts to the building at our silent phase kickoff on Nov. 2. This is the Miami football game weekend. As we move into our campaign for our new $65‐million building – Legacy Hall – we will again be relying on the generosity of our alumni and friends. Stay tuned for more information. These are few examples of large gifts, but every gift truly makes a difference to our current and future students, the faculty and to the college. You will find some other examples below in Development News. We often say private support makes the difference between a “good” university and a “great” university. That is true. And while we’re on the subject, all of us at the College of Business thank you for responding so generously to FSU’s recent Great Give campaign. The college raised $13,670, which surpassed our $10,000 goal. Your gift shows us that you understand the value of investing in the college and its students and faculty, and we are grateful. I hope you will join with others who are contributing to the future of the college and leaving a legacy for our current and future students. You’ll be hearing more soon. All the best, Caryn L. Beck‐Dudley TOP STORIES Gift from Beauty Industry Leader a Boon for Professional Sales Efforts Neill‐TSP, a leader in the beauty industry and the exclusive Aveda distributor, has established the Neill‐ TSP Fund for Excellence in Sales in the college’s Sales Institute. Their recent $300,000 gift will provide support for the institute’s Professional Sales Program and be mutually beneficial to our students, the company and the institute. To learn more, click here.
