DEAN's MESSAGE It's Hard to Believe the Fall Semester Is Just Around The DEAN’S MESSAGE It’s hard to believe the fall semester is just around the corner. All of us at the College of Business are looking forward to working with students, faculty and staff during the upcoming year. In the meantime, there is a lot of good news to report from over the summer. As I have discussed many times, private gift giving is essential to creating a premier College of Business. I want to highlight a few gifts to demonstrate the impact that philanthropy can have on our programs. For example, last month, we received a very generous gift from Neill‐TSP to create the Neill‐TSP Fund for Excellence in Sales. Among other things, this support enables us to offer our Professional Sales students invaluable internships with the company and for our faculty to share research with Neill‐TSP. (More on this below.) Corporate gifts like this one – as well as support from foundations and individuals – allow us to add new programs, enhance the quality of our existing programs, make higher education accessible to students who otherwise could not afford to attend, and help us attract and retain world‐class faculty. Also, remember that alumni annual giving rates are one of the factors on which U.S. News & World Report bases its national rankings of universities. Because of past private support, we were able to create and expand The Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship at the College of Business. These gifts have been transformative as we continue to foster the spirit of entrepreneurship across campus and empower students to become entrepreneurs. Further, last year’s significant gift from alumnus Dr. William T. Hold and his organization, The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research, helped the university launch “The Risk Initiative,” a campaign establishing FSU as a national leader in a number of academic fields that involve risk. Alumnus Bob Sasser and his wife Pam, kicked off our building campaign with a $1 million gift, which they hope will inspire others to invest in the new building. It inspired Parrish Owens, a 2008 graduate, to give a gift that will go toward building a 100‐seat auditorium and alumnus Steve Leonard gave a gift that will recreate the Stephen C. Leonard Sales Laboratory. Both of these gifts are designated for the new building. This is just a teaser and we will be detailing several other large and small gifts to the building at our silent phase kickoff on Nov. 2. This is the Miami football game weekend. As we move into our campaign for our new $65‐million building – Legacy Hall – we will again be relying on the generosity of our alumni and friends. Stay tuned for more information. These are few examples of large gifts, but every gift truly makes a difference to our current and future students, the faculty and to the college. You will find some other examples below in Development News. We often say private support makes the difference between a “good” university and a “great” university. That is true. And while we’re on the subject, all of us at the College of Business thank you for responding so generously to FSU’s recent Great Give campaign. The college raised $13,670, which surpassed our $10,000 goal. Your gift shows us that you understand the value of investing in the college and its students and faculty, and we are grateful. I hope you will join with others who are contributing to the future of the college and leaving a legacy for our current and future students. You’ll be hearing more soon. All the best, Caryn L. Beck‐Dudley TOP STORIES Gift from Beauty Industry Leader a Boon for Professional Sales Efforts Neill‐TSP, a leader in the beauty industry and the exclusive Aveda distributor, has established the Neill‐ TSP Fund for Excellence in Sales in the college’s Sales Institute. Their recent $300,000 gift will provide support for the institute’s Professional Sales Program and be mutually beneficial to our students, the company and the institute. To learn more, click here. New Ranking Names Business Incubator in Top 10 The college’s InNOLEvation Accelerator has been ranked one of the world’s best university student business incubators for 2013 by the University Business Incubator (UBI) Index, a Sweden‐based research group. The group is the first global index to benchmark performance and best practices of university business incubators. Our incubator ranked 8th in the Americas and 16th globally. COLLEGE NEWS New Retail Management Major a Hit In the last Dean’s Brief, we announced a $300,000 gift from the Florida Retail Foundation to help us launch a new major in retail management. We are happy to announce the new retail management course (MAR 3231) maxed out its 41‐seat capacity. To learn more, click here. Jaguars’ Coach Headlines Dean’s Speaker Series Jerry Sullivan, wide receivers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, spoke about the similarities between coaching a football team and heading a business in May for the Dean’s Speaker Series. Sullivan’s coaching career spans 41 years, including 20 in the National Football League and 21 at the collegiate level. He has coached several Pro Bowl receivers in his career including the San Diego Chargers’ Anthony Miller (1992‐93) and Tony Martin (1996), Detroit Lions’ Herman Moore (1997‐98) and Germaine Crowell (1999) and Arizona Cardinals’ David Boston (2001). Fortress CFO Keynotes Master’s Hooding Ceremony Daniel N. Bass (ACG ’88/MS ’89), chief financial officer of Fortress Investment Group LLC, and a member of the firm’s Management Committee, was the guest speaker for the Master’s Hooding Ceremony in May. Prior to joining Fortress in November 2003, Bass spent 11 years at Deutsche Bank. Over the course of his career at Deutsche Bank, he held the positions of managing director of DB Capital Partners and managing director of Global Business Area Controller of Deutsche Bank’s Corporate Investments Division. Prior to that, Bass was a senior associate in the International Tax Practice at Coopers & Lybrand. International Program Takes Dedman Faculty, Students Far Since 1970, the Dedman School of Hospitality faculty members have been teaching in Leysin, Switzerland, through FSU’s International Programs. Jane Ohlin, Don Farr, Ernie Lanford and Cynthia Johnson taught this summer, offering students the opportunity to discover a world of hotels, restaurants, foods and wines in the heartland of the European hospitality industry. This program achieves an ideal educational balance: accelerated classroom instruction, travel and on‐site observation of industry operations. Students benefit from myriad professional, cultural and recreational attractions throughout Switzerland and neighboring countries. Marking Three Decades of Service This spring marked the 30th anniversary of the Center for Human Resource Management. Bill Anthony, management professor emeritus, developed the center to bring academics, students and practicing professionals together. Thirty practicing professionals and numerous active faculty members and students represent the center, which continues to flourish. The celebration participants included Anthony, as well as several original members of the center who traveled from as far as California. Business Office Team Wins Best of the Best The College of Business’ University Business Administrators (UBA) staff won the “Best Team” award in the university’s 2013 UBA Annual Employee Appreciation Program. Our team – business administrator Mark Thorp, accounting specialists Susan Hochstein, Tara Kazmirski and Terry Rinkle and HR specialist Jennifer Tobias —beat out teams from 30 UBA sites on campus. The award recognizes the site or unit that pulls together and approaches everything with a spirit of teamwork. Star of ABC’s ‘Shark Tank’ Kicks Off Power Forward Series Barbara Corcoran of ABC’s hit reality show “Shark Tank” and NBC’s “Today Show“ real estate contributor will be the guest speaker at the inaugural Power Forward Speakers Series in November, which is Entrepreneurship Month. She will discuss her professional journey in her talk titled “From Straight D‐ Student to Entrepreneurial Billionaire.” The college is partnering with First Commerce Credit Union, The Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship, 850 Business Magazine and Proctor University to sponsor the Power Forward Speaker Series. The event takes place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at University Center Club. Advance tickets are $30 before the event or $45 at the door. To register, click here. Real Estate Trends Conference to feature former U.S. Senator, Blackstone’s Head Former Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson (R) will be the featured speaker at the opening of our 19th Annual Real Estate Trends Conference. The conference will be held Nov. 14‐15 (in conjunction with homecoming weekend and the Syracuse football game). Jonathan Gray, head of Global Real Estate for Blackstone, also is confirmed as one of the conference speakers. While conference registration will begin in September, conference sponsors are being sought now. For more, contact Ryan Dietz, the real estate center’s director of external relations and senior development officer, at [email protected]. Vet Center Hosts Another Successful Boot Camp The Center for Veteran Outreach hosted its sixth annual Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities in June. This year’s class was made up of 22 veterans hailing from 11 states. Participants represented the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force. DEVELOPMENT NEWS We are grateful to the following donors for their generous gifts: Donna Abood (MAR ’81) made a commitment of $50,000 to the Real Estate Center for Education & Research for the establishment of the Donna Abood Endowed Leadership Fund. The annual proceeds from this endowment will fund student travel and competitive events, which will promote FSU’s talented real estate students.
