1.1 History The was the first narrow-gauge railway to be opened in Mid-, and was built to the unusual gauge of 2 feet 3 inches. It operated for eighty nine years, until it was closed by British Railways in 1948. The Corris started out serving the quarries at the head of the Dulas Valley transporting the slate to the quays on the River Dovey near , and from the 1870s also carrying passengers. In it's heyday in the 1890s it carried around 80,000 passengers a year, when, coupled with the railways own bus services, it transported early tourists onwards to Lake Tallyn and the mountains of Cadair Idris.

After its closure, the line was soon dismantled, with the line being lifted and the trackbed left to return to nature, and remaining buildings put to other uses. Unlike the other Welsh narrow gauge lines it did not look like a likely prospect for revival.

In 1967 The Corris Railway Society was formed and set out to open a museum in the surviving Corris Station Complex, which was officially opened in 1970.In 1971 a short section of track was laid adjacent to the museum. In 1981 the society purchased the engine shed and yard at Maspoeth, and by 1984 the line was re-opened from Corris to Maspoeth. It wasn't to be until 1996 when the first steam train would re-run on the line though, when Loco No. 4 would be loaned by the Railway.

2.1 Locomotive No. 5

Purchased in 1974, No.5 is a 4-wheel Simplex, Works No.22258. Built in 1965, it was originally used on the 2 ft (610mm) gauge gypsum mining system at Staveley Lime Products, Hindlow, Derbyshire.

It was initially purchased from Staveley by an enthusiast who stripped it down for renovation. It was in this dismantled state that it was sold to the Corris Society.

Following an extensive overhaul in the East Midlands, No.5 ran for the first time on Corris rails in 1979. It is named “Alan Meaden” in honour of the Society's late founder, who carried out a substantial part of the loco’s rebuilding.

The Corris Society sought a light locomotive to assist in rebuilding the railway, and it has since proven itself to be a very useful general works loco. Although it has on occasion been used for special passenger trains when visiting , it is too light for regular passenger use, and has not been fitted with the necessary air braking equipment.

No.9 is a 4-wheel battery electric locomotive, Clayton B0457, built in 1974. It was formerly in use at the Slate Quarry by Wincilate Limted. At the request of Wincilate, the locomotive carries the name “Aberllefenni”. It has regular use as a carriage shed shunter, but is too light for actual passenger carriage work. As per No.5, it also does not have air brakes fitted.

3.1 Corris No. 5

1 Hand Brake 5 Sander - Front

2 Reverser 6 Whistle 3 Gear Lever 7 Clutch 4 Throttle 8 Sander - Rear

Corris No.5 is a Simplex diesel shunter and has a mechanical transmission. It is quite unique in that in has a clutch pedal which makes driving it somewhat different that other diesel mechanical locomotives you may be used to.

Hand Brake Firstly the most important control on No.5 is the hand brake. This is a simple device in that the harder and further you apply it, the harder the brake is applied. The brake can be applied with the " ' " key and released with the " ; " key. © Copyright Skyhook Games 2017, all rights reserved Release Version 1.0 Page 8

Reverser The next control is the reverser, this has 3 positions: 1. Forward (handle towards the seat position) 2. Neutral (handle in the middle) 3. Reverse (handle away from the seat position) The control selects the direction you wish to travel in. You can move the reverser to forward with the "W" key, and to backwards with the "S" key.

Gear Lever Next up is the gear lever, this has two positions, high speed and low speed. Low speed is the position away from the driving seat, and high speed is the position closest to the driving seat. The low speed gear has a maximum speed of around 7 mph while the high speed gear has a top speed of about 14 mph. While coasting you must ensure the speed does not exceed the gears maximum to prevent the engine from over-speeding and causing damage. To start you should use low gear as it provides more starting torque due to the higher gear ratio. The gear can be changed up with the "E" key and down with "Shift + E" key combination.

Throttle The next control is the throttle. This controls the flow of fuel to the engine increasing the engines RPM and power. To increase power the "A" key is used while to decrease power the "D" key is used.

Sanders There are two sanders on the locomotive. These are operated by gravity once the operating handle/pedal are operated. The front sander (pedal on the left) can be activated with the "X" key, the rear sander (handle on the right) can be operated with the "C" key.

Whistle The locomotive is fitted with an air whistle, when the handle is pulled the chimney is blocked forcing exhaust gases through an air whistle. You can give a short blast on the whistle with the "B" key, or longer blasts with the space bar.

Clutch The final driving control on No. 5 is the clutch. Essentially, the clutch disconnects the engine from the transmission, preventing the engine from stalling when stationary, and allowing the gear to be changed more easily. By default the clutch is fully depressed. To release the clutch "Shift + R" key combination is used, while to apply the clutch the "R" key is used. To change gear or move the reverser the throttle should be off and the clutch fully depressed.

Starting Procedure Here we will go over the starting procedure on this loco because you will likely stall it at some stage. First let’s stall the engine, release the clutch pedal fully and the engine should cut out. Once the engine has stalled, re-depress the clutch pedal otherwise when we try to start the engine again it will instantly stall. Now that we have the engine stopped, the other unique thing to point out about Corris No.5 is the fact that it does not have an automatic starter. You must hand crank the engine to start it. When the engine is off, the crank handle will appear in its starting slot.

To start the engine we must build up the engine’s RPM enough to allow it to fire. Be careful when doing this as the handle has a habit of snatching and could break your wrist. To start the engine you must repeatedly tap the "Z" key in a repeated quick rhythmic fashion until the engine fires up. Do ensure the clutch pedal is fully depressed before trying!

Getting Moving

Hopefully you should have the engine restarted now, so let's get going. To start moving, first we should select forward with the reverser, then release the brake. Next open the throttle a bit, say to 20%. Once done, gently release the clutch pedal. You should hear the engine’s RPM drop momentarily, and once the clutch is release enough, the locomotive should start off moving. If the engine revs continue to drop, and the locomotive shows no sign of moving, check the reverser is in the correct direction and the gear is in low speed. If both are correct, increase the throttle a bit and hopefully the locomotive should start moving. Once under way, you can now release the clutch fully, and control the speed with the throttle.

Gears

It is probably time to change gear now. To do so, throttle off, depress the clutch, change gear, release the clutch and open the throttle again. If you find yourself slowing down too much on a hill, you may need to change back down to the low speed gear. The process of changing down a gear is exactly the same as changing up.

Stopping

To stop, throttle off, then depress the clutch to prevent the engine stalling as you slow, then slowly apply the hand brake to slow the locomotive down.
