The redundant Church of St. John the Evangelist, New Briggate, is located within the Parish and is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The Parish of Leeds City is part of the Diocese of Leeds within the Church of England. The correspondence address is St.Peter’s House, Kirkgate, Leeds LS2 7DJ. The PCC operates under the Parochial Church Council Powers Measure. The PCC is a registered charity. The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. All Church attendees are encouraged to register on the Electoral Roll and stand for election to the PCC. Statement of PCC members' responsibilities in respect of the Annual Report and the Financial Statements The PCC members are responsible for preparing the Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and regulations. The financial statements are required by law to give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Church and of the excess of expenditure over income for that period. In preparing these financial statements, the PCC members are required to: select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in its activities. The PCC members are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Church and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011 and the Church Accounting Regulations 2006. They have general responsibility for taking such steps as are reasonably open to them to safeguard the assets of the Church and to prevent and detect fraud and other irregularities. Objectives and Activities Leeds City PCC has the responsibility of co-operating with the Rector Designate of Leeds in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. It also has maintenance responsibilities for the Church of St. Peter at Leeds; the St. Peter’s precinct buildings comprising St. Peter’s House, the Church Hall, and the Verger’s House; and Holy Trinity Church. When reviewing the aims and objectives of the charity, and in planning future activities, the trustees have complied with the duty in section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to public benefit guidance published by the Commission. Review of the year 2015 saw the start of a period of significant change in the life of the Parish. The new Diocese of Leeds, the Church of England in West Yorkshire and the Dales, came into being on Easter Day 2014 and since then the new structure of five episcopal areas has continued to develop, with the Minster regarded as the principal Church in the Leeds Episcopal Area. Thus it was in the Minster that the new Bishop of Richmond, with responsibility for the Leeds Episcopal Area, was announced in June and, less than two weeks later, where the Bishop of Leeds ordained four new priests to serve in the Episcopal area. 4 Following Canon Tony Bundock’s move in October 2014 to become House for Duty Priest in Lacey Green, Princes Risborough, the Reverend Charles Dobbin MBE was appointed by the Bishop as Interim Priest-in-Charge of the City Parish from November 2014. Charles served in this capacity until 30th September 2015 and the parish owes him a debt of gratitude for his diligence in providing clergy cover for services, for his work in developing pastoral care and nurture within the main Sunday morning congregation and for his successful efforts to secure a grant from the Friends of the Music of Leeds Minster of £310,000 towards paying off the accumulated deficit of parish share. Charles’ last Sunday at the Minster was marked by a service to which various faith communities in Leeds were invited, in the presence of Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Dr Ingrid Roscoe. Canon Sam Corley was licensed as Priest-in-Charge on 6th October 2015 and came to the parish charged with encouraging the spiritual and numerical growth of the congregations; enriching the variety of worship offered; establishing adequate support and supervision of lay staff; developing robust governance; improving the financial situation and increasing the connectivity between the Minister, Episcopal Area and the City. Ann Nicholl has served the parish in a multitude of different capacities over the years and her retirement from activity in the parish, particularly as Lay Reader and as Chaplain to St Peter’s School, was marked during the morning service on 30th August 2015, when particular mention was made of the support Ann has offered to many in their spiritual journey over the years. Ann has retained oversight of the day-to-day running of Holy Trinity Church for the time being. Preparatory work for a Quinquennial Inspection Report on the fabric of Holy Trinity has been undertaken and the report is expected soon. The Quinquennial Inspection Report on the Minster was published in December 2015 and discussed by the PCC in January 2016. An application to the Roof Repair Find was made in February 2016 to secure sufficient funds to replace the roofs of the Minster tower and Lady Chapel; both roofs have failed and need replacing. We will be informed of the result in June. In February 2016 the Church Buildings’ Council of the Archbishops’ Council began work on producing a conservation management plan for the Minster.

It also plans to hold a Course on Leadership in Ringing, with the intention of attracting younger ringers. 2 Yorkshire Association Newsletter Autumn 2014 EDITORIAL In the last edition about a year ago I said that we hoped the Newsletter might join the 21st Century in its presentation to members. This was discussed by the Association’s Standing Sub-Committee in February when it was decided that the Newsletter should continue in a paper format (as well as being on-line) so all members could readily browse through it at tower ringing. So this is what I’ve actioned. Holly Webster of York, originally from Easingwold, has very kindly filled the breach left by Jean Doman and has dealt with the layout and the new printing firm.

Jesus went into the desert to encounter God in a deeper way – by reducing the stimuli from the outer world, to heighten his awareness of God’s presence, desire, and grace. And the desert was also a place of temptation, because it is usual when we seek to encounter God in a heightened way for the impulses that draw us away from God to become heightened too. God invites us also into the desert. At times we use the desert as a metaphor for the arid times that come upon us; but in Lent the choice for the desert is intentional – a decision for ways of being, praying, serving and so on that lead us on a truer path of following Jesus. For this reason we are using this Lent to launch the Cathedral’s Rule of Life.
